Zettace posted:If I let the app sit minimized for sometime and return the entire page I was at will refresh and I'll lose the place where I was at. The weird thing is that the page will load up at the part I stopped at but then it'll instantly refresh and bring me back to the top of the page. I get this on my iPhone 5 all the time, I posted about it in this thread a while back. It's my only gripe with the app... after a few hours of not using the app, trying to return to it I almost always lose my scroll position in the thread i was reading.

At this point if I'm planning on leaving the app at all, I either finish the page I'm on or do a "mark Read up to here"

Yeah that's what I suspected. Any way of dealing with this, either in the app or out? The memory control on iOS 7 seems overly aggressive.

NicktheNorse posted:Any way of dealing with this, either in the app or out? The memory control on iOS 7 seems overly aggressive. Yep, it's on the list (and been there for a little while). There are several other items on the list that have to do with the reading posts screen, and I'm going to tackle them at the same time, which is why none of them have actually gotten done. Posts screen stuff was actually my last item for the now-submitted version, so it's now my first item for the next version. edit: And I'll just confirm the explanations given above as they're all accurate.

I don't think you realize how important it is for me to be able to read these forums every single minute of the day. What if someone makes a post that I have the perfect punchline for, and I miss the window for optimum comedy to post it? Who's going to compensate me for that lost humor?

This app is my solace when I eat out alone. At this point, my workaround has been to queue up threads in bookmarks and view them that way. It won't make me a posting superstar in GBS, YOSPOS or DDRD, but at least I can still keep up-to-date with my Retrogames thread. Stupid loving heartbleed.

Does anyone else get almost constant crashes in image heavy threads on page loads? I'm on a 5S and trying to view the AI Car poo poo Picture thread is basically impossible. I'm guessing it's more an iOS issue being too aggressive on memory management. e: I see you recognized some issues wrt it being pushed out of memory in the background and there being some other memory issues. If this isn't on the list could you look into it a bit? Y'all are the best! baram. fucked around with this message at 20:40 on Apr 11, 2014 |

I've long had it on the list to do that thing sites do where they use JavaScript to watch for scrolling and load/unload images as they become visible/invisible. SA is a bit annoying as it doesn't include image dimensions in markup, but it's still worth doing despite the jerkiness that will surely result.

We could add the width and height into the elements when we hit them, or use visibility: collapse to preserve the space. (That *might* not free the image, but I can check.) It might not have to be jerky. I know the old web-wrapper FB app had some tricks for this, to avoid OOM on iPads with more images visible at a given time. I think I know who to ask about that.

Subjunctive posted:We could add the width and height into the elements when we hit them, or use visibility: collapse to preserve the space. (That *might* not free the image, but I can check.) In my mind the jerkiness comes from scrolling up. You scroll up, a previously-unseen image gets loaded that's 800px tall, what happens to the scrollOffset? As I said it's better than a crash, but it's something to avoid if at all possible.

If the image is fully visible, it should I think be "below" the scrollOffset tracking the top of the viewport, so that's fine. But I would leave a box in flow anyway. Honestly, I'd leave the <img> and give it a cheap shared placeholder image, so that whatever other CSS stuff still holds. You can keep the image from being scaled I think, so it would be shared. [timg]s are all the same size too. Somewhat depends on whether the issue is decoded image, CGImage or whatever, or something else, I guess.

Came to check what was up with the error code. Glad to see that the fix is in the pipeline. Is there a reason why I can read my bookmarked threads but not the actual threads? I get that it's because of the announcement on the password thing screwing everything up, but I was just curious what was making the app still update those.

Anya posted:Came to check what was up with the error code. Glad to see that the fix is in the pipeline. The error occurs when trying to list the threads in the forum along with the Heartbleed announcement sticky. Your bookmark page doesn't have the Heartbleed sticky, so it updates just fine. The bookmark page jumps directly to the thread, bypassing the sticky.

Why can't you have the app fetch the required xpath strings at runtime (or when updated) from a centralized source (github) so if the forum updates you don't need an entire new version of the app? Does the App Store not allow this?
