Fortunately Steven was doing the recording today, as this came up almost immediately. Clip starts right when Jimmy is breaking down and for a minute right until Opie hits the ill-fitting bumper featuring Stacy Keach talking about Deuces.

What an awful day. Jimmy sounds like he just wants to go home and crash.

He was in Manchester a few months ago and I went with a group of friends to see him. He loving killed it, just a fantastic show. We hung out a bit after the show talking with him and he couldn't have been nicer.

I've just felt crushed all day. What a loss.

The best Otto & George story:

Years ago Otto and George were performing in a park (maybe Washington Square park?), the crowd was pretty rough, and George was doing crowd work. In a play on the old NRA talking-point George said, "Guns don't kill people, Puerto Ricans kill people" at which point a Puerto Rican gentlemen produced a knife, rushed forward and stabbed George.... the puppet. That's when George - without skipping a beat - yelled, "This spic stabbed me!"

Otto stayed in character the whole time.

I really don't see the 'treat this like the next Patrice' thing the Otto guy is having on everyone. I have never heard of this guy, on the show or the internet. Never mentioned when they bring up comics or friends and I must have been extremely unlucky to miss every show he was on. He just never gets brought up when they talk about others like Bobby, Vos, colin, and even with much smaller name comics.

Apparently everyone and their mother knew who this guy was and are lapping up the tributes asap. They loving hate hack ventriloquists (except when backpedaling when Dunham is in studio) I know he gave Jim help but I really ain't feeling it. Hopefully the pity party doesn't last a long time.

He had a lot of classic moments on the show in the past, but he's very old school in some ways so he had about zero profile lately. I'm sure this weekend they'll play basically every clip they can find and you're more likely to be able to appreciate him.

Sucks about Otto. Always liked him even though i neve really understood why he started going into O&A without the puppet. At least I got to see him perform. My girlfriend was horrified with his material. It was a good night.

You do realize the regulars work with tons of comedians that hardly ever do the show, right? Jim and Bob are always talking about Keith Robinson but he only does O&A like once every two years.

I'm not sure if you're trolling or not but if you aren't then you should get into Otto if you like Patrice, since they both approached comedy the same way.

The story I always remember is the one where Otto and Jimmy went home with some chicks, but were purposely not trying to be charming at all, basically just trying to make each other laugh. One of the girls told Otto that she had a grandfather who committed suicide. When he was in her kitchen he notices a picture on the fridge that looks like it could be the grandfather, and he says "Is this the dummy that tossed himself out the window?"

I wish I had been able to see him more. I'm grateful I got to see him live once at least.

The best part about Otto live was really two parts: part one was how funny his act was; part two was seeing the people who bought tickets without knowing anything about Otto get offended and walk out.

And like I said earlier, off the stage he couldn't have been nicer. We chatted him up after the show for a good 10 minutes and I gave him some suggestions on where he could grab a late night meal nearby. My friend bought a CD and Otto signed it with "Die, cocksucker!"

I know people hate it when we (overly?) praise the dead, but Otto was one of the few comics I never minded having on, because he would be more about being a #th mic and joining the fun rather than making the chats about himself. Like Louis CK or Jim Florentine (though I can't stand football/sports talk), I've never hated an appearance he was on.

Plus, early 50's is way too soon to go. So it's a damned shame that he's gone :(

Yeah, there's a definite skill to being a great sit-in guest who adds while almost never detracting. The only regular who actually adds by making things about themselves is Vos because he constantly opens himself up to really funny beatings. "HERE'S THE THING -"
