Oh yeah, I'm depressing familiar with how this sort of thing plays out, but that's exactly why I feel such glee about it: Making these racist fuckwads all panic the gently caress out and then have to go through the trouble of actually selling their homes and finding new ones and stuff. If they're going to be douchebags then seeing their community ruined by their own failure to accept newcomers is about the only plus side I can see in the whole thing.

A majority of white people in town don't even know the east side exists, thinking it a separate town where their kids shouldn't go.

Welp, the Department of Justice got enough complaints about this segregation that it triggered a Fair Housing lawsuit. We have Section 8 housing ("the projects"), but so far it has been placed far on the east side (where minority and poor residents already live). Now we have a court order that two 400-unit, high-density, non-elderly housing projects MUST be placed smack dab in the middle of the richest census tracts in the richest county in Texas.

I just got to sit through a public hearing about the proposed construction and got to bask in the tears of upwards of a hundred rich, white, butthurt racists pleading to the council to prevent "those people" from invading their neighborhoods and schools. There is absolutely nothing that can be done to change the construction plan. :getin:

I dont really see how thats a great thing. I would be pretty pissed if i spent a lifetime building equity into my home only to have the local Gov devalue it over the next 10 years.

Who is complaining about segregation? Minorities that want to live with those terrible racists?
It sounds like a great way to depress a whole town/gently caress up your back

I would love to be wrong about this, but has moving a large amount of lower income people into the middle of an upper class area ever improved a town? Is the general idea to make the whole thing middle class instead of rich on the left, poor on the right?

In a related matter, this happened a while ago, but it's arguably the single best thing George Lucas has ever done.

Lucas wanted to add an expansion to Skywalker Ranch, his development studio in Marin county. This expansion has been part of his approved development plan since 1996. He was doing everything that liberal, wealthy Marin wanted: preserving greenspace, environmental protection remediation, so on and so forth. It was all headed towards approval until one group of neighbors banded together into a new HOA (well, actually they resurrected an old defunct one and violated that HOA's own bylaws to do it) and started complaining about all these new jobs coming into their area, the increased property value they'd enjoy, and so forth.

So Lucas got fed up and said "Okay, gently caress you guys, I'm selling this land to a developer to build low-income housing."

There are always going to be people earning less than the average of the area, or that have to deal with circumstances like a larger family, health issues or lower retirement income, that would not be able to reside within a reasonable distance of their places of employment, children's schools or whatever.

You can't really solve this via higher wages since is the area's housing costs will just catch up in a few years.

Having a complete spectrum of housing costs within an area maintains social mobility and acts as a safety net for people that are going through hopefully temporary though times.

I love this. A while back the richy city of Folsom, CA (east of Sacramento) decided they'd rather pay the fine than put in low-income/Section 8 housing.

I don't think they got away with it for too long; a couple of years ago I was told that a smallish apartment building was "where poor people live."

Not Austin, believe it or not! Think smaller and much farther north.

Yes, there will be a small drop in property values, but not a large increase in crime. The big bad east side is already rolled into the town's crime statistics, and these will largely be transplants from there as the existing projects are converted to indigent elderly housing. As far as property value goes, forgive me if I don't shed a tear for lost home equity that was only as high as it was specifically due to its distance from brown people.

People don't seem to understand how much of a boon this will be to the section 8 residents. Because of the way the town was segregated throughout its development, the east side residents don't have access to nearby jobs, and public transportation here is nearly nonexistent. Also guess where the good schools are, as in the ones that teachers actually want to work for instead of the ONE that teachers had to settle for when they weren't hired anywhere else? These kids will get to reap the benefits that have been heaped on the rich (on the public dime mind you) for years. Their parents will get to shop at a real grocery store instead of convenience stores.

Their lives will be dramatically improved. And as for white flight, who cares? If they want to leave when the terrible poors and blacks are actually getting some benefits from living in the town in which they were born and work, then so be it. A lot of the reason they even had the opportunity to be rich here is the efforts of our Economic Development Corporation to bring corporate headquarters, defense contractors, and tech companies to the area. Which, by the way, is funded through a sales tax premium that ALL residents pay.

So is the low income housing like projects? Around here they've slowly torn down all the housing projects, instead spreading people out so you don't have that concentration of poverty.

Mixing up the various income levels is a good thing, but sticking all the poor people in a block of housing, even if it's surrounded by rich stuff, maybe not so good.

At least here, its the only option to be reach any real fair housing goal. The alternatives are tax credit housing, which would take forever to get enough units voluntarily put up by developers, and housing vouchers which doesn't really work in this situation (they would just end up in the ghetto again due to the astronomical housing costs here).

But all that aside, the schadenfreude is flowing freely with the dumbshit, exurban, lily-white, pearl-clutching snobs breaking down in tears. Sometimes literally having to sit down because they are so angry or are sobbing.

Unless they have some plan to avoid a Chicago style housing project, I can't blame the crying rich folk too much. I don't doubt their rationale is selfish, but they have a legitimate concern.

Then again, I just looked up some info on one of the worst housing projects in Chicago and it had 3607 units. So maybe 400 isn't too difficult to manage.
