I watched all Jake Ellenbergers fights on fightpass the other day. They dont have his fight v Mike Pyle up, which is bullcrap, imo. The Condit fight I already watched, and Ellenberger won, sorry Carlos, love you.

Then he fought John Howard, and let me tell you Howard punched him all around the ring. Everything Howard threw landed and made Jake fly around like a wire fu movie. Seriously, Jake couldn't have been closer to getting TKO'd every time the fight was standing. On the other hand, he was able to take Howard down when he was getting blasted, and he hosed Howard up with elbows from inside the guard. Its a crazy, awesome fight, and by the middle of the third, Howards left eye is swollen totally shut and his other eye looks horrible too, overall he looks like a crazy bug man. Great fight.

Then he fought Carlos Eduardo Rocha, who kind of owns except he wasn't ready to fight ellenberger at all. Hes got great jiu jitsu and makes Ellenbergers life hell in round one. But in round two Ellenberger catches him with a shot standing and Rocha's basically done, coasting to a decision loss. I don't really hold this fight against Ellenberger much because Rocha is apparently a secret jiu jitsu genius and frankly everyone at WW is lucky he wasn't really ready to be thrown in the deepend in the UFC and doesn't fight anymore.

The diego fight actually goes exactly like anyone would think. Ellenberger is better than Diego at everything except gas, and Diego spends most the fight getting beat as bad as he did when he fought BJ. In the last round, when Ellenberger's tired as gently caress, Diego starts charging at him but Ellenberger stops like full on charges with jabs, which is hilarious. Then Diego somehow I forget got on top of Jake and beat the ever loving poo poo out of him from back control for awhile, but it didn't matter because of how hilariously he got outlcassed for most the fight

Jake brutalizes Kampmann, hurting him with everything at the beginning of the rounds, but he goes 100% and Kampmann is a lot easier to hurt than he is to KO. So while Jake isn't defending himself at all throwing bombs Kampmann owns him. Basically Jake just goes all out and gives this one away chasing a finish. Also after he goes for broke at the beginning he fails to TKO Kampmann and they rest against the fence for a long time.

thats all the ones I watched because the only other ones on fightpass were his first round KO's and v Jay Heiron, and I'm not about to start watching Jay Heiron fights.

I dont actually know what I think about Ellenberger still. He's similar to hendricks in that he has elite wrestling, great power, and has gotten into trouble blowing his wad early. But he actually has great elbows from the guard. Hes definitely much better on top. I don't think his chin is as good, but he's had way more fights so that makes sense. I think his gas tank, especially at this point, is much worse. Also his striking isn't near as good, although it is pretty good. He was clearly superior to Diego, but inferior to Rory and Condit, and I'd put Rory, Condit, Hendricks, Pierce and Lawler at the top of the striking class in the division right now. But his wrestling owns as much as anyones, and he's got really good GnP. Only Condit's looks as good. Its probably not as important to have gnp at the top of the division though since he'd probably never get to use it against Lawler, pierce, hendricks, and obviously rory. But it got him through the John Howard fight, and at least one other one, my memory is kinda fuzzy cuz I watched these a couple days ago.

I'd be real interested in hearing your rundown on Mike Pierce since he is/was briefly a PSP Approved Fighter and then has had some (debatable) trouble at the top and more recently with Palhares. His fight with Maia would have been pretty cool except he got hurt. I think I remember him being one of the first to give Fitch trouble at the beginning of Fitch's decline but I can't remember exactly.

Thats what Im doing right now. They don't have the Fitch fight on fightpass, but so far Ive watched his debut against Larsen and the fight after the Fitch fight. Kenny and Goldberg did a really good job calling Pierce v Larsen. It was a big upset at the time according to them, and I guess Larsen was considered a pretty tough guy at the time. The big selling point they gave was he'd only lost to Fitch and Condit (remember he armbarred him in the first scramble of the fight), and he was on a 5 fight finishing streak. Anyway Pierce just owns him wrestling the whole time and in the third round he starts beast throwing him. In between rounds Pierces corner says Hes only doing guillotine to kimura, guillotine to kimura, guillotine to kimura and Pierce says Doesn't he know I don't have a neck? then he looks directly into the camera and says I don't have a neck.

The fight after the fitch fight was against Julio Paulino, and it was weird. Paulino looked huge and towered over Pierce standing but then when Pierce put him on his back he looked like a featherweight. The guys guard was terrible, I guess he was a striking specialist, but he wasn't better at striking than Pierce, but he had one major advantage, which was the ref. The ref stood Pierce up in the last minute of every round, and more than that, too. He stood pierce up in the middle of the fight. He stood Pierce up while he was punching Julio in the face. He stood Pierce up on a deep double he was working on. There was one time that Julio was getting doubled that he looked to the ref and said, "My foots stuck." The ref stops the fight and the camera shows Paulino's foot has slipped between the cage and the mat. Joe and Mike are like, I've never seen that before. Then the guy slips his foot out and the match restarts standing. Theres more beastly throws.

so far Pierce has good cardio, great wrestling, and his striking and GnP have clearly improved. Hes not that good at either in the Larsen fight but he does some good stuff to Paulino. Also Rogan bitches endlessly that Pierce doesnt leave the half guard and mount the whole time, including the required reference to Randy preferring half guard, and he sort of has a point.

He fought two first timers in a row, Amilcar Alves and Kenny Robertson. Every single fight so far he foot stomped guys as part of his takedown attack, and stayed in half guard by choice. He did a straight arm bar on Alves from half guard. He didnt slam any guys in the past few fights but he is sort of Hughesian still cuz of that time Hughes tapped Riggs from half guard. Alves was outclassed and got ground and pounded. Robertson was more competitive against the takedown but in the 2nd Pierce knocked him down with a left, then KO'd him with GnP. He walked away before the ref stepped in. It was cool.

iirc in the Fitch fight he rightfully lost 29-28, but it was notable because the round he clearly won was round 3, and anyone winning round 3 against Fitch was kind of weird.

My take on Pierce was that he's really good but fights with absolutely no sense of urgency even when the fight is obviously really close, which leads to him getting hosed on decisions. I might be exaggerating how many times that's happened, though.

I don't know if it happened against Fitch, but thats not how I would characterize the Hendricks loss. He got him down and laid some good licks on him but Hendricks got back up and was coming on strong himself. Also the Bradley fight was the same deal, they were both fighting hard down to the end. By the way who the heck is Paul Bradley, he's huge and as good at wrestling and striking as Mike Pierce, with great cardio and the only guy I've seen so far as strong as Pierce, besides Hendricks. Bradley + hendricks are the only two guys besides I assume Fitch who have been able to keep Pierce off them.

I remember this fight, mostly because I was getting into Rocha at the time. He had styled on some nobody before fighting Ellenberger. Rocha breakdanced all over Ellenberger in the first, at various time I want to say he was trying to hit a double kneebar. Then he couldn't get any takedowns (and as you say, he probably got punched a lot) and went on to lose a decision and never be seen again.
