It looks like rooting is by and large obsolete now, but I just bought a rooted Galaxy Note 1 on Swappa and was wondering if I should leave it or reset to factory settings? Anybody have experience with rooting this device that could weigh in either way? I'm mostly going to be using it for business, i.e. productivity and creative apps, if that's a factor.

Well, I had Google Play Music cause my phone to be unable to wake up again today. Still have Xposed "uninstalled" (that is, the app's still there, but if you open the it, you have to install the framework), so that's two strikes for GMP. I've used a little Songza in the interim, and it's been fine thus far. This is really disappointing for GPM.

You're streaming it with the screen off and then can't get the screen to turn on? Have you seen anyone else online mention this problem? In the app thread, people have complained about Play Music a few times, but nobody has ever mentioned that, that I recall.

I hit the power/sleep button, and I can tell that the backlight turns on, but it just displays black. I have to hard-reset the phone. I'm about to do a Google search for this, but I'm not really sure what to call the phenomenon.

If you don't have a specific reason to root, I wouldn't bother. I never rooted my Note 3 and it hasn't really caused me any real grief. I use my phone way too much to keep changing ROMs all the time, and I have little need for the other things that root access brings. Honestly, the only thing I really miss is the ad blocking.

The fact that KitKat stops me from using my external SD card has me thinking of rooting. If I'd know this was the case I wouldn't have upgraded; it would be nice if there was an easy way to downgrade your firmware.

What exactly are you trying to do with your SD card?

I can't download directly to it, or use my file manager to move things to it. I would possibly be ok with either solution, but if I am not near a computer I can't add or move anything out of my internal memory which is pretty annoying. It doesn't break the core features of my phone, but I bought my phone because it came with the ability to use an SD card, so not being able to use one fully irks me.

An S4. edit: It seems like ES File Explorer will allow you to move things on to your SD card in the new version provided you create a folder on the SD card with that program first. Athanos fucked around with this message at 04:46 on Apr 21, 2014 |

I have a rooted Android phone (Samsung GT S5830 running Cyanogenmod) with some tar.gz files that I want to install. It's my understanding that I need to install them via terminal. How the heck do you run terminal for an Android device? I have a terminal emulator already installed on my phone- is this the best way to go about doing it?

Apps can download to the SD card, but they can now only download/modify their protected folder on the SD card. What are you trying to do that requires moving files on your phone using a file manager? It looks like the way Google wants you to move data between apps is to "share" from one app to another. You may be familiar with this from doing something like hitting "share" on a photo in the gallery and choosing a different photo editing app. Everything probably still works and you aren't prevented from using your SD card, you just can't easily manually organize it from your phone anymore. Apps will store data where they are allowed to and will have more restricted access to each other's storage, but you should still be able to share the data. Athanos posted:An S4. Yeah, I think this is right. Apps that have updated to support KitKat should be able to create an arbitrary file structure within their protected folder, I think. So if ES File Explorer wants to, it should be able to mostly recreate the old organization you used to have, provided you always and only use that app to deal with your SD card contents. I was curious about Google's take on this so here's an interesting little exchange (here, and the response it the next message) justin tipton posted:Justin Tipton here. GWBBQ posted:Moto X Developer Edition: Live Dangerously. That said, a buggy phone could be a contributing factor in someone's death if say, emergency calls can't be placed when they otherwise should be able to, delaying the arrival of emergency services in a critical time. That much is entirely plausible, especially given that there have been issues with emergency calls in ROMs (e.g., CyanogenMod) in the past, and we should expect that they will still come up from time-to-time in the future. I don't know if that statement comes from an engineer who truly believes that smartphones are non-user-serviceable appliances and that nobody should be mucking with them ever, or if it comes from a lawyer who is avoiding lawsuit from a recognized risk. Could be either, but the caps suggests lawyer.

I love cyanogenmod on my att s3 but I'm getting real tired of how poo poo the amoled looks compared to my lovely work blackberry or my kids lovely 4g ipods. I've not been reading any android stuff in months. I want cyanogenmod and I want it to be as good as it is on the s3. A removable battery + sd slot would be really really nice but I suppose I can live without. I have an upgrade at ATT, anything they have I should be checking out? Anything upcoming? Should I take my upgrade flip it and buy something ATT doesn't have? N5?

Does anyone know of a way to stop an app from showing an update in the Play Store? I'm using an old version of the T-Mo My Account app that I will never update (the later updates make the app a steaming pile of crap) and I'd like to have my "update all" button back in the Play Store. I think that TiBu Pro is supposed to have a feature like this but all I see in my TiBu menu is "attach to to market."

I've been using CM11 nightlies ever since I got my Verizon Galaxy S3, however, lately it's been becoming somewhat slow and unresponsive. Does anyone have a ROM they prefer over CM? I tried slimrom but the higher resolution makes everything too small for my poor eyes.

What is it about CM that you like? Stock + GravityBox replaced my love for CM/PA/PAC-ROM/etc as it has/does just about everything that I liked from the custom ROMs. Here's the gist of Gravity Box: http://lifehacker.com/gravitybox-adds-a-ton-of-tweaks-to-android-in-one-custo-1502250290 Here's the Gravity Box XDA thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/xposed/modules/app-gravitybox-v2-9-1-tweak-box-android-t2554049 Edit: Also if you truly liked SlimROM despite the resolution issues, that may be fixed with an app like LCDDensity: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=lv.n3o.lcddensity
