quote:The system also supports a method of monster creation similar to that used in 3rd Edition. You can start by choosing a monster's ability scores, hit dice, and so forth, designing it without reference to challenge rating. Once you're done, you can then calculate its challenge rating based on the values you assigned to it.

Hi, i'm from 1992, I'd like my terrible enemy design process back thanks for all the about 4e being literally a video game, the gamey aspects of its monster design is actually a GOOD THING, no matter how much you hate world of warcraft / diablo / whatever 'computer-game' is popular with kids these days

@RunAGame Will caster monsters have full (or abbreviated) rules for all their spells included in the Monster Manual entry? #dndnext @mikemearls Probably not for all, but ideally for key ones. Comes down to space. Hey, guys, I hope you liked having to stop to look up spells in mid-game. That approach might be okay for low-level casters, but what happens when you get up to the levels when enemies have dozens of spells and/or spell-like powers at their fingertips? (Seriously, I'm looking over the Way of the Wicked adventure path for 13th Age conversion, and while it's good stuff overall, the boss fights are almost all "here's a guy in a room, here's his statblock with a solid page full of spell names. Have at it.")
|
# ? Apr 22, 2014 14:56 |
gently caress that. That's exactly the opposite of how I want to design enemies. Though I guess since you can backsolve for level, it stands to reason that you could start with CR and derive the attributes instead. Spell lists can still get hosed though.

Somewhere, those Pathfinder guys are sweat'n. They're sweat'n because they know Next is the new hotness, like a nerd with her glasses off, and she is gonna make a clean sweep of all those neckbeards. She's gonna hoover them up and drag them away with her superior product. And then, these Pathfinder guys, they'll look up at the sky clutching a copy of Roleplaying Sales Quarterly, and cry "They stole our game", but nobody can hear irony at a frequency that high. Only dogs can hear it.
