Probably for legal reasons - if they were identifiable it would have to be covered in a privacy policy.

HTML5 boilerplate does a clever thing where it tries to load a remote version of jQuery, then loads a local version if that fails:

1) How would I do something similar to check for Angularjs? Is there an equivalent of window.jQuery that would check if Angular is loaded?

2) Can I do something similar for CSS? If I'm loading a remote version of bootstrap:

How could I check it's loaded and then revert to a local version if it's not? If it's not possible then is it better to always load a local version (slower) or always load a remote version (riskier)?

It should just be window.angular instead of window.jQuery.

Looks like it's taking some of the popular Flash tweening (not shape-tweening though AFAIK) semantics and such, though I haven't really read it deeply yet.

I have a stupid newbie question about best practices with HTML, and this seems to be the place to ask.

I understand that versions of IE older than 9 won't display HTML5 tags such as <header>, and google is abound with methods to work around this. Using <div>'s instead seems to be the simplest and most fool-proof solution, and the FAQ in the OP indicates this is acceptable. The problem is I don't really understand what tangible benefits I'm losing by not using these tags. All the arguments I've been able to find for using them have been pretty abstract, and I don't understand why a developer would consider it worth the trade off to use them while there's still a significant number of dinosaurs running IE8.

I feel like I'm missing something here.

Semantics. I mean, why use <p> when <div> exists, right?

Also IE8 and under can display <header>, it'll just be unsure what to do with it. For that there is HTML5shiv like the OP states.

That's a good question. I think so from conversation with people implementing it (iOS was definitely on the radar), but I haven't decrypted the spec enough to be sure. I'll ask.

I assume that keyframes don't give you the right shape for this.

IMO one of the biggest tangible benefits you lose is document structure. HTML 5 hasn't been around for all that long and there are already tons of tools, browser plugins and poo poo baked straight into browsers themselves (eg. iOS's reader view) that will only work if you structure your documents well. If you just use divs, they (generally) will not work as well, if at all.

There are also theoretically SEO benefits, but that's such a rumor-laden industry that I have no idea how much of it to believe.

The entire point is you can control CSS GPU accelerated animations with JavaScript, thus you create your own easing mechanism for everything. There is a warning on the draft that they are thinking about limiting the flexibility in the future so you may want to shout on the mailing list to point them in the right direction.

I'm assuming you'll see jagged text and it seems to be caused by having -webkit-backface-visibility: hidden; on the .front class but why the hell would that be affecting text outside of that container? Anyone have any ideas?

This is an old, old WebKit bug, and I see references going back to 2012:

Thanks for the responses! I was aware of HTML5shiv, but didn't want to use it since I haven't learned javascript yet, and didn't like the idea of using stuff I didn't really understand. If functionality is lost though, I'll use the tags with the fix.

Work in an incognito tab. If you're working with offline web apps this is also nice for having a fresh cache for testing and development.

Open DevTools, click on the gear icon, enable the "Disable cache (while DevTools is open)" option.
