I really enjoyed the book, does the film measure up in any way? Weirdly I think Spring Breakers is fairly close to the feel of LTZ.

No, just like Bright Lights Big City the movie is not really as impactful as the novel, but it's still a good movie.

Yes, we have feathers--but the muscles of men.
After watching Solomon Kane, I think I finally empathize with all those people who poo poo on superhero movies for their insistence on including origin stories. It is an okay movie, but holy poo poo does it feel meandering. It did make interested in looking up the source material though.

Columbo is the most amazing show for decompressing after a long day. It is my absolute favorite detective show, and it's a blast if you like thinking about class warfare.

Yes the source material helps. From Conan to Kane. I give them props at least trying to stick to him being reformed. From a director of some horrible poo poo which placed my expectations at Hotel for Dogs level.

I think it was recently added, but if you haven't ever watched Less Than Zero it's a good 80s drug movie with Robert Downey Jr., Andrew McCarthy and James Spader. It's about as good as Bright Lights Big City (which is unfortunately not on Netflix).

You know, when you look at where McCarthy's career went over the last 20 years suddenly RDJ's decade long struggle with substance abuse doesn't seem like such a bad thing. Maybe Andy should've partied a little harder back in the day, he might have a career these days.

The source material is a lot of fun. This collects all of the stories.
One thing about them though is as they were written in the '30's, they are filled with some horrifyingly racist stuff that is completely out of place today, but wouldn't have bothered people back then.

Trolling Link for a decade

If you want to see two totally different cities portrayed in terms of culture and cuisine, by a streetwise New Yorker chef, watch the last two episodes of season 2 of Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown where he explores Tokyo and Detroit.

In Tokyo he talks to yaoi artists, struggling metal rock stars, and delves into the seamy underworld of BDSM as practiced there, and talks with a badass chef whose karate skills actually help him make better sushi.

In Detroit he eats BBQ with regular folks, has dinner at a struggling fire company (they're ALL struggling in Detroit) and talks with a chef who could have practiced his art successfully anywhere in the world, yet came back to Detroit to run a pop-up restaurant that uses mostly locally grown produce. And he hangs out with a reporter who's also a native and has a rapport with everyone in every neighborhood they visit. Yeah, they also focus for a moment on the desolation and abandonment.

Interior. Leather Bar. is... interesting. It's James Franco wanting to "re-imagine" the 40 minutes of explicit gay footage that was cut from the Pacino film Cruising. Worth a watch, I'd say.

I thought Interior: Leather Bar was enjoyable enough, but overall not very good because (no pun intended) it's just too far up it's own rear end. It's a movie that spends a the vast majority of it's short running time trying to explain why it's important and interesting to be filming gay sex rather than, y'know, filming gay sex. It's a movie that's just so god damned pleased with itself and I don't feel that satisfaction is all that justified. It's also this weird thing where it tries to be interesting by being a mockumentary that is self aware of it's own fakeness, but it doesn't do anything beyond being self aware of it's own fakeness.

The idea of it is appealing to me, because to me it's like what if someone wrote a whole story about what's going on in The Garden Of Earthly Delights. But why do that when Bosch's painting already exists?

Oh poo poo yeah, I've been wanting to rewatch Rome, and actually being able to watch Boardwalk Empire will be nice. I've been looking for a reason to get prime, and I think I might actually take the plunge.

How does Prime handle access from multiple devices at the same time? I'll want to share with my roommates.

Just watched Absentia and thought it was a very decent low budget horror movie. It might turn some people off because it really switches gears half way through but I thought the concept was pretty original and it actually managed to scare me a few times, which is good because I keep watching horror movies that forget to do that part.

Netflix Streaming: Go In With Low Expectations And You'll Be Pleasantly Surprised.

I've been re-watching Pokemon, and realized that Ash is pretty much a oval office for a lot of the early episodes. So is Misty. Brock's a pretty cool guy, though.

The Running Man definitely isn't as good as it could be, but it has some really good parts to it- and Dawson is superb. Harlan Ellison reviewed it and panned the film, but said that Dawson deserved an Oscar.

I'm old enough to remember when Angel Heart came out and was such a big deal cuz of the humpy time with Lisa Bonet and the mind scramble ending (which is super obvious now). I agree it didn't really hold up - but it's still worth a watch.....and then you might as well track down the rest of Mickey's 1980's movies.

So that explains why he did not answer. He had no mouth to answer with. There is nothing left of him but his ears.

Measured by any detached and objective metric The Running Man isn't a sterling example of the craft of filmmaking. It's fun as hell though, and because it never asks to be taken seriously its flaws come off as endearing.

I honestly think it's one of most enjoyable action movies of the eighties.
