I just got into the game, this is my first time playing a souls game, I'm thinking of playing either as a swordsman or a warrior, how much harder is the game going to be without the shield for me? also, what gifts should I select, and are there any items I should immediately go out looking for early in the game?

Shields are amazing for staying alive, but you can get some other shields pretty quick into the game. But if you want to start with one, go for it. Sword and board is how you should do your first playthrough.

Sure didn't take long for my sorcerer to get the Demon's Great Hammer. I love how the game starts with a collection of npcs laughing at you. Off to a great start,

Essentially nothing you choose at the start is going to set anything into stone. You want to get a shield? Whatever. Just go pick one up. The classes are your starting equipment, kind of to push you in a certain direction, but you can do whatever it is you want past that as long as you have the stats to wear/wield the item you want.

Ay ay ay, what a mess  I was going to wait until steam sales because of the lighting engine thing. But after seeing VaatiVidya's comparison and reading about the little niggling things that are beginning to appear in abundance. Right now I'd go so far as to pirate it and send $60 to the guy who made DSFix. fake edit : I'm not going to pirate it, despite this post I'll probably break and buy it within the month and develop the appropriate level of Stockholm Syndrome. Pirating is bad. Stay in school kids

I did the review of this one for GamingTrend, and I thought the whole thing was a definite step up over Dark Souls' initial PC foray (admittedly, that's not saying much.) I slid into keyboard/mouse controls pretty easily, the lack of GFWL was drat pleasant, the online aspect was smooth - everything seemed to go a lot better this time around for me with minimal issues.

It's basically the exact same as it was in dks with the addition that it now scales with the average of your Int and Fth (and even without investment it's still very strong).
