That fight was rad, the funniest part was that it wasn't televised because they had to make room for Jake Rosholt fighting some schlub because it was stipulated in his contract that all his fights had to be televised. After they realized how badly they screwed up they scheduled a special WEC end of the year show pretty much expressly for the purpose of airing Cerrone/McCullough.

This was one of my favorite fights of all time. It made me a Cowboy fan but it made me more of a Rob McCullough fan. Those guys are tough as loving hell in that fight. I really wish Rob would have had a better career and we could have seen him in other punch fests.

Watched Leben vs Akiyama from UFC 116 and holy smokes how do two guys take a beating like that and still stay standing. I know missed the talk about Browne's rib and the science of a liver blow but Leben needs to donate his jaw to science after he dies. I've seen a couple fights now where guys keep fighting after they've been rocked, but the way both Leben and Akiyama kept trading jabs after they've punched each other silly was almost scary. I'm not sure if Leben really had the presence of mind to lock in the sub at the end or if he got a little lucky that Akiyama slipped the way he did, but it was an amazing fight. Also watched the legendary Hendo vs Rua match from UFC 139 and really enjoyed that as well. Obviously Rua did well, but I'm not sure that he was quite on par with Hendo like a lot of people say, but I was pretty tired when I watched the fight and I'm just getting into the UFC so maybe I just didn't see what more experienced fans saw. Pretty insane that Hendo was 41 at the time of that fight and he's still going strong now. He looks like Alice the Goon from the Popeye cartoons but he is one hell of a fighter.

You should make sure not to watch Leben's retirement fight against Uriah Hall, because it's really depressing for this exact reason. He just continuously plods forward into stiff counterpunches and almost gets TKOed but is saved by the bell, at which point he decides on the spot that he's going to retire from MMA rather than fight a second round.

There is a pretty common notion of a "lucky punch", but the more I watch combat sports the less I believe this is true. Luck seems to be a combination of skill, timing, set-ups, and your opponent making mistakes. When it comes to submissions, there is no such thing. You can't accidentally triangle a guy, it is a very complex move requiring you do several subtle moves simultaneously. Especially against grappler like Akiyama, who knows how do defend such a thing. That choke has to be 95% perfect to have any effect at all, and even then its possible to escape. Akiyama was beaten and tired at that point which probably contributed a bit to the tap, but I recall it being a pretty good triangle in any case. I never liked Leben, but that fight made me respect him as a martial artist instead of some dumb brawler.
