It's not impossible to find characters that you like or anything but I myself find that convention atmospheres and external pressure like 'trying to get noticed' and all that can become exhausting. I wish that these choices could be made in a vacuum but as we stand, so many character selections seem to be seen as "I'm so hot, look at my body" or "I'm not like those other girls, I dress like a dude" kind of poo poo. What do you even pick that doesn't seem like a statement? I personally try to look at people's craftsmanship and their attitude and all to judge their cosplays, and it's my hope that other people can approach it the same way. I think the push for better representation of women in games is really positive and I am so ready for more badass, non-sexualized women in entertainment but we should not throw real women under the bus for how they want to dress.

I went to C2E2 this weekend and I didn't take many pictures but I saw some excellent costumes. I think the "OMG SO REVEALING COSPLAY JUST WANT ATTENTIONS" argument can be summed up with "If you got it, flaunt it". Not much difference between someone dressing like Ivy or Moxie while a dude dresses up like a spartan from 300. If you fit the costume, more power to ya. If you don't, gently caress it, have fun with it. Weirdly enough, it doesn't matter WHAT women wear, there's always gonna be someone who's kink is that thing and they are going to not have the basic manners to not act like a creep. There's "wow that costume is awesome!" and "totally gonna eyefuck the poo poo outta that chick", and having balls doesn't excuse you from acting like an rear end in public around women. Having tits doesn't excuse you from acting like an rear end around guys either. gently caress man, I'm a hetero male, I'm not gonna complain because a good looking woman decides to wear a revealing costume.

I've occasionally wondered why some people would choose certain costumes - not because I think the costumes are overly sexualized, but because by choosing that outfit, does that then become an endorsement, intentional or otherwise, of the mindset that created it? We've admitted that there is a lack of non-sexualized strong female characters out there, so by choosing to emulate something overtly sexualized, is that a tacit acceptance of the status quo? On the other hand, not everything should be seen as a statement, and it's unfair to judge anyone's motivations for wearing whatever it is they might be clad in. Everyone likes to feel sexy, and cons are one of the few places where you can really get away with it. Personally, I don't mind a bit what someone decides to wear, more power to them - I think the act of wearing a costume is a distinct expression in itself, but I'll readily admit that I'm not a fan of many of the characters that are chosen. Many of them being nothing but thin veneers of personality against a massive pair of tits.

God, they all just want attention. Why else would they dress that way?  I totally did the Kanji outfit (I'm a dude) a few years ago for Halloween. It had the added benefit of being immediately recognizable as Marilyn Monroe by people who weren't familiar with the Persona 4 character. We went to a costume party and a costume contest at a local pub (we don't get many cons out here in Bumfuck, Midwest, so my friends and I usually wait until Halloween to bust out costumes). The whole night was great except for one guy who saw me from behind and in his drunken haze thought I really was a woman--he ran up and grabbed my rear end full-on with both hands, and hard. While his buddies were crying from laughing so hard, he caught wise and slurred "wha the fuuuuuu" and ran out of the bar.
