I barely know what I'm doing in this game but it's fun and only promises to get radder as time goes on. I just got to Gran Soren and have a couple of novice questions I'm hoping someone will answer: -I started as a strider and intend to switch to assassin; is there an ideal time to do so? Should I max my strider rank first to make sure I've unlocked as many skills/passives as I can? -Is there a quick way to get to the witch's hut in the woods? I have a sidequest that wants me to bring her something so if there's a shortcut I'd love to hear about it. I thought I'd have more to ask but I'm drawing a blank for now. I'm sure I'll have plenty of dumb questions as new stuff keeps showing up, though

I just got to Gran Soren and have a couple of novice questions I'm hoping someone will answer: You can switch whenever you feel like it. While there is a difference in stat growths between classes, it's really not terribly important in the long run unless you're going from one end of the spectrum to another (Fighter to Mage or vice versa). So if you feel like you need a change of pace, go for it. You can always go back to finish up Strider later, and such. For your second question, nope! Well there's a semi-glitchy way to get back up the back exit, involving levitation and tossing yourself at the wall at a certain angle, but really, you should just set one of your Portcrystals nearby it. Some people like putting it by the back exit, on the little cliff, but I think it's fair enough to go through the woods when you want to go back there. Makes it a bit fairer in my personal style.

Thanks for the answers! Sounds like the class-changing system is pretty forgiving, which is great. I might dip into fighter to see what skills I can unlock later on, even. For now though I'm enjoying strider and will probably max it out before I go assassin. To make sure I understand, maxing out a class is all about your class rank and not your level, right? I'll have everything a class can do available to unlock once I hit the last rank? (I think it's 10?)

Strider gets most of its good abilities by like rank 6 or 7, but there's one Augment (Leg Strength) at rank 9 that is useful for almost any character, since it makes your movement speed act like you're one weight class below what you really are. Assassin is a pretty good class, but really feel free to experiment. The vocation system is super forgiving, and even if you spend 100 levels bouncing around every class the worst that'll happen is that you can do everything well instead of one thing marginally better. So if you like the Assassin's sword skills, give Fighter a try, they have a lot of cool moves. Or just pick a class at random; the only class I'd say isn't fun to play is the basic Mage.

I did the staff/levitate trick and left a portcrystal right outside the backdoor. As a first-timer, you should take the long way. That way, your pawn learns the Witchwood. Also, it's kind of fun to explore. The first time. After the third of fourth time, it's a chore.

For now though I'm enjoying strider and will probably max it out before I go assassin. You shouldn't really worry about minmaxing your classes. In fact, it's not a bad idea to naturally learn all of the augments over the course of the game by maxing all your vocations. You'll have a rounder set of stats, experience in playing all of the vocations, and a huge list of augments to choose from. Sure, you won't stab a thing quite as hard as an Arisen that has spent levels 10+ as assassin, but you also won't die from being sneezed at and can reasonably use any gear you find. And you'll still stab pretty okay. That said, if you find you can't stand casting or slow 2-handers, you can stick to what you DO like and be pretty good at it. So don't worry about it.

Does Dark Arisen add anything to the main game besides some higher level vocation skills or is all the new content on BBI? All I have right now is the vanilla game but I've had a real craving to start a new character, is there any reason not to just start one in vanilla, play a while, and then buy Dark Arisen when I get a chance and import my character into that to do the new content?

Thanks to Gildiss' LP of this game I picked this game back up despite it leaving a bad taste in my mouth the first time, and finally mustered up the motivation to beat it... sort of, because holy poo poo Grigori is destroying my rear end. I'm playing a melee fighter and I am getting pasted despite bringing three destruction magic-based mages along because I've got basically no way to hit him without either being stun-locked afterward or being lucky enough to reach one of the phases where he kinda flops around uselessly for a bit. I don't suppose there's a way to go back before the fight starts so I can prepare more and then try again, is there? I thought I was prepared enough but obviously I was wrong.Captain Novolin posted:There's a lot of balance changes and more importantly, your character doesn't import. Existing character saves import flawlessly from DD to Dark Arisen. When you first start it up it asks you if you want to start a new game or carry over your DD save. It even gives your old character the bonuses for having a DD save on your console. edit: Also, why can't I rate pawns/be rated anymore? It doesn't give me the option to do so. It's been awhile but I think if the pawn has a icon of a person with a slash mark through it that means they don't have the expansion and you can't rate those for whatever reason.

So, I've accidentally started taking Mercedes on a whirlwind tour of Gransys. I started her escort mission, and the target area is some place I've never been to or heard of so I don't know how to get there yet. So far in my attempts to reach it we've visited the Watergod's Altar (wish I had grabbed the quest for that place beforehand, but killing a cyclops with such ease felt awesome) and the abbey (seeing Quina there was quite a surprise!). I wonder where we'll end up next?! Next on the list of directions to try is southwest, past the path to the Witchwood. Wish me luck Also, fun times in the Watergod's Altar - had both Mercedes and my main pawn randomly leap and/or fall into the deep water, instantly dying and prompting me to load a save. It was too funny to be annoying, at least. Mr. Baps fucked around with this message at 02:06 on Apr 30, 2014 |

Mercedes' escort quest is I think to the Shadow Fort, the destination of another one of the Wyrm Hunt quests (A Fortress Besieged). It's northwest of the Witchwood entrance, so that's roughly the right direction. You should wander around the forest south of the Shadow Fort on the way there. Nothing bad could happen

Beat the game, if it could be called doing that. The ending was real dumb but I'm glad they didn't take it the opposite direction and make everything shiny and happy forever. The only thing I really ever gave a poo poo about was killing the big dragon and getting my loving heart back, and now I do have it back and so I'm happy with this outcome. Maybe it's because I didn't really care enough about the game world or any of the characters, or maybe because the game didn't go to much effort to try to get me to care. I dunno. I'll probably play through it again just to check out a different playstyle once I've finished up the actual-end-of-the-game-for-real-this-time stuff. The affinity system also is real dumb. What were they even thinking with that?
