I agree that the 920 is a rugged phone, and the 900, but my wife dropped her 900 and the screen cracked completely. Then she got a replacement, dropped that and the same problem.

I've seen plenty of 920s with cracked screens. Some people just like to drop them in the right way, I guess.

You've seen 920s? In the wild? I'm delighted anytime I see a Windows Phone in public, because it does not happen often.
And while It's nice that the 920 is rugged, I can't tolerate the bulk it adds. I really gotta upgrade it at some point.

Well, I work at Microsoft, so I'm not sure if my coworker's phones count as "in the wild". I do see a good amount around here in public, but again, a lot of people here work at Microsoft.

I own a 920 and love the drat thing. I upgraded from a 520 because my son needed a new phone, so he got my 520! :v:

It's a fantastic phone and the screen is wonderful!

Dropped my 1020 on concrete a few times, not a scratch. But you hit it against one doorknob at the wrong angle... :argh: (it was totally my fault and it only has the one crack and some minor spiderwebbing so I'm honestly impressed)

I've seen one other person with a 1020 here in Houston, some 520s, and a few of the more midrange phones.

I killed the LCD and digitizer on my 900 by dropping it on gravel, but the glass was totally fine.

I typically put a thin TPU case on my Lumia phones, not so much for protection but to keep them pristine for when I flip them on craigslist for a new phone. Times 10 various family members.

Any time I see someone with a Lumia 920 (or an HTC 8x), I assume they are an MS employee because those were the two choices offered to employees when WP8 was released. I've only met one non-employee who had a 920, and he hated it (because of size, weight, and reboots). The majority of non-employee Windows phones I see are the Lumia 520/620. But this is Asia, so...

I've only managed to drop my 925 once (onto hardwood floor), and so far no scratches/cracks/dents. At least, not on the phone; pretty sure I dented the floor.

Whoah whoah whoah, did I seriously just see this right? Is there no copy and paste functionality in the 8.1 email app?

This is borderline dealbreaker for me. I'm copying and pasting poo poo out of emails on the run a lot :(

I'm talking plaintext, not hyperlinks, etc. Seriously Microsoft, don't make me go back to Apple over this kind of bullshit.

I have it in my email on 8.1... you literally just highlight the word and then click the little clipboard bubble that pops up. What is saying there is no copy/paste support?

Yeah, C&P was enough of a make-or-break feature that it basically got an OS update all to itself. NoDo, the first OS update WP7 ever got, was basically just that plus a few stability fixes. No way they'd ever leave it out of any part of the OS after going through that for it.

(As I recall, Joe Belfiore said something along the lines of "who needs copy and paste???" in an interview and the tech press never let him hear the end of that one)

Just as a PSA, hold and drag no longer works also. The new way is mostly better for me.

While trying to explain to someone via text that those big baggy pants with straps on the legs are called "bondage pants," I discovered that the WinPhone dictionary considers "bondage" one of the censored words.

So I guess the list is censoring more than just swear words, but actually any terms that a person could use when searching for porn? Just for fun, try swyping/tapping "That is a sexy car" or "Horny toads are adorable" in a text message and see which words don't autocomplete.

I guess this could be used for some new slang when it blocks so many goddamn words. So I can talk about Game of Thrones with someone and be like "King Joffrey is the product of invest. Wait I mean he's the product of infest. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH" Of course I can swype "he is the product of incestuous" and it works, because nobody would search that word on an adult website.

Surprisingly there was a recent article about that as well. It looks like MS wants you to be able to talk about dicks and such, they're just erring on the side of caution initially.

Hm I think that URL is from the previous post. Does MS give any reasoning for it? I mean, is it "think of the children" (even though children want iPhones)?

Anyway, my friend is going to love the flood of texts I send him while fixing the dictionary.
"Rape rape rape"
"Incest incest incest"
"Nipple nipple nipple"

You can also cancel the texts rather than send them, but why would you want to.

Probably MS wants to error on the side of caution for autocorrect until they find out you're a creep, doctor, or social worker. Seems like the right choice to me.

Does anyone have any sort of insider hit or rumor on what/when Sprint will get a new Windows Phone? Now with Nokia being Microsoft, I wonder if they will ever pick up something like the 1020/1520/930, whatever the hell Microsoft has on it's plate.

I am dying for a Windows Phone after playing with 8.1 on my Sisters 8X which just runs circles around my Android 4.3 EVO LTE. A 1520 would really be the bees knees for me with that screen and camera.

If nothing is on the radar for the next year or more, I may have to break down and pick up that new HTC M8 with the Harman/Kardon upgrade. Just wish the camera anywhere near as good as a Nokia's.

Long story short, Google and Microsoft don't get along. Good news is that somebody decided to back down/play nice and push is back in 8.1, which should be out this summer via carrier updates. If you don't want to wait, you can go through the dev preview, download the Preview for Developers app, and get push plus a bunch of other cool stuff detailed in the OP.

Not in the case of Chrome -- even if they wanted to (although you are correct in that they don't), Google couldn't write a native Chrome browser for WP. Browser engine's locked down.

Honestly this sounds simple enough that a third-party dev could probably handle it. Depending on how open Google's API is on the subject of bookmarks, of course, which I have no idea about.

Technically they could, there shouldn't be any technical obstacles, but MS would never allow it onto the store.

On a sidenote have you guys with 8.1 used the tab syncing feature of IE? It's actually very handy but in true MS fashion it wasn't readily obvious how to do it.

On the phone

Open IE
Click tab button
Now swipe sideways to see a list of all devices with all open tabs showing in real-time

On the PC/tablet

Click the button in IE for a new clean tab
Look right under the squares/tiles, you'll see drop down boxes for all your different devices including phone

In terms of favorites, under the desktop/tablet look under favorites and you'll see a folder called phone. On the phone click favorites and then the folder button down at the bottom to see your desktop/tablet favorites.

LifeSizePotato

Would it be possible to have a Chrome extension that somehow tied into the MS/Live account whatever and allowed you to share Chrome desktop tabs and favorites with your Windows phone?

Yeah, I'm sure it has nothing to do with that Scroogle poo poo and the Android license fees. Former has been done with, and hopefully latter will be, too (I think the fees have been reduced already?).

Developers have access to C++ and Direct3D, Google could easily bring Chrome over to WP in regards to accelerated graphics. The Javascript engine is a different issue, because Microsoft doesn't let you certify apps that access the VirtualAlloc API to create memory allocations that are executable (to store and execute JITed Javascript code).

Google has been pretty open about why they aren't supporting WP8. This was before Scroogled even. And the licensing fees they pay because they want access to the patents, that's kind of an industry standard thing. Exhibit B, everyone that made an app for the Xbone managed to utilize the existing APIs and stuff to properly use voice/UI control. But not Google, they wanted to do it their way so that the Youtube app matches all their other TV device apps. Who cares about the inconvenience to Xbone owners, we're Google! I don't hate Google, but they are not the victim here. There is a long Internet trail that covers their thoughts/dealings with Windows Phone going back years.

That being said, it looks like they are now learning to play nice.
