I got told my policy was terrible in the Miata thread because it's invalid if I leave the vehicle unlocked/insecure, but what is the point of insurance with that little coverage?

Mine says 'all sums' for personal injury and up to £20m on property (which is standard, possibly the legally mandated minimum)

The US is really weird about insurance. Unless I get an umbrella policy that covers a lot more than the car, the standard maximums are 250/500 for liability while the minimums will barely cover a minor accident with a nice car.

Presumably places with sane healthcare systems allow insurance companies to offer huge coverages for little money because no one will ever need them.

In alberta, insurance companies are legally limited as to what they can charge, but on the flip side, they are only required to pay out $4000 max for "pain and suffering"

The most a new driver in one of the 2 major cities can be charged is #1637/year for 1 mil liability, and the ticket for driving without insurance is $2,885

The US auto insurance/health care situation is hosed up beyond belief. The thought that the life of everybody involved can be completely hosed by a fender bender scares me.

Which you totally should, because it is cheap cheap cheap to get lots of coverage once the underlying auto and homeowner's policies have been maxed out. I pay <$45/mo for $2M in coverage, and that applies to 4 vehicles and 2 houses.

Insurance/Health in the US is a brilliant system for the lawyers. Insurance is hosed because doctors charge truly extortionate amounts of $$, health care is hosed because doctors work 9 months of the year at those $$ just to pay their insurance premiums. And around it goes. The only winners are the ones who get a % of every claim - the lawyers.

I find the concept of having liability cover of less than $5M completely insane. How can you possibly have the courage to get on the road with only $5k cover?

While doctors are paid well, they don't get paid the rate that the hospital bills them at. Doctors are out of the loop on the billing side of things.

Yeah I have multiple family members that are doctors and while they do make a nice living they are the first to tell me that we need *major* heathcare system reform like NOW. They make a pittance compared to the executives and administrators on the hospital management company's board.

Haha. Doctors aren't even interested in the billing side of things. I was talking to a doctor and his nurse about my costs for treating sciatica when he looked at me and said, "Talk to the girls up front, I'm not involved in billing or money."

Gummy Bear Heaven ... It's where I go when the world is too mean.
They don't want cost to factor into their decisions on what is best and most effective for the patient. Which is fair until you get them pushing drugs that are just slightly better but cost vastly more. Most of the time the patient doesn't care as insurance will take care of it, but then everyone pays more for the insurance and, well, here we are.

Our existing healthcare reform is loving awesome. The greedy fucks aren't getting a lot of money, so they're retiring early. The rest are just poo poo at their jobs. The only doctor who was approved for my surgery under OC? He's got SANCTIONS against him and lost his license in CT. No, I'm not going to have that guy slice me open. Yes, he is the only one both approved and accepting ObamaCare within a 200 mile radius.

Of course, now they can't gently caress me for a pre-existing condition, thank god, but lemme tell ya these current half-to-pay-for-own-insurance expenses are costing over a third of my just-to-live-and-pay-basic-bills, so that tacks on 33% on someone who isn't going to be cleared to work anytime soon. What the hell - it's only been over a loving year. I'm going to be completely destitute before I get back to work at this rate.

If I had never worked a day in my life? I'd be covered. If I was here under less-than-legal circumstances? I'd have had my surgery on the same day, rather than kicked to the curb and ignored hours after a traumatic brain injury. I wasn't even speaking out of monosyllabic words for several days afterwards. Oh, yeah, I shouldnt have been released. They shouldn't have ignored my cries for help from the pain due to the severe separation of my shoulder. They wouldn't even x-ray it until days later when I returned to the ER. They didn't want to deal with me, because they didn't see any money in it. I've been told this flat out by several hospital employees and private sector medical folks.

We need a lot of things reformed - we need to start by taking care of our loving citizens who give back. The often-praised these days socialism concepts still don't work if nobody works. :v:

Malpractice, of course. Operating on wrong parts, leaving people in worse shape AFTER surgery than before (that can be medically proven), doing a poo poo job which has left these people unable to resume life.

All of this was prevalent under the pre-ACA system, as well. You are describing the ills of the healthcare system and then pinning the entire blame on "ObamaCare". I'm sorry you're having so much trouble getting treatment, but put the blame where it belongs.
