Pope Francis uses @pontifex, and if I recall correctly the account was set up by Benny 16. It's a good way to mark the continuity of an office rather than an individual - Cantor probably has one as @RepCantor or something for his office.

Added in 1899, but the full title is Majority/Minority Leader.

Speaker is way more Orwellian.

So yeah, because I can't read a calendar, the new OP is not going to be ready in time, so the May one will be another variation on the existing one. I wanted to rift off the next thread title and go sector by sector through America and lay out how every thing is hosed, topic by topic. Break down would be something like

I) Food
A) Food Production
B) Food Distribution
C) Food Access
D) Food Prices
E) Food & Health
II) Water
A) Water Supplies
B) Water Cleanliness
C) Water Usage
D) Water Prices
E) Sanitation
III) Air
A) Air pollution
B) Short term issues
C) Long term issues
D) Air & Public Health
IV) Land
V) Housing
VI) Utilities (Electricity, Trash, & Internet)
VII) Health Care
VIII) Economy
IX) Finance
X) Knowledge Workers
etc) Manufacturing
Service Workers
Système D
Immigration
Organized Labor
Patents
Justice System
Veterans' issues
Race issues
Gender issues
LBGT issues
Religion
Generations
Climate Change
Foreign Policy
Budgets and DEBT

and then go in to what USA politics is actually focused on (let's put it this way - today the Dow hit a record high, and an entire street in Baltimore collapsed.)

It is problematic because
1) Things really are hosed, and the more you learn the more you realize how hosed they are (2 million people don't have access to an indoor toilet, 147 million live in areas flagged for unsafe levels of air pollution, and we are almost out of money to repair roads for the year and it isn't even May yet)
2) Some of the stuff is so hosed I don't know how to classify it. (Is the way housing got rigged to steal every last penny nonwhites get part of the race topic, the housing topic, the zoning topic, or the finance topic?)
3) It approaches some sort of manifesto level writing, even just listing it all without pushing a solution. (Today's numbers had the economy basically flatline, and the markets soared on word the Federal Reserve wasn't going to do anything. How do you even address that objectively?)

So yeah. Gonna put that on the back burner, keep poking at it, maybe for June. Shame because "Everything is hosed. Emphasis on Everything" would have gone great with it.

Anyways

And for some non naval gazing stuff, here are more reports on Operation Choke Point, a DoJ program that sounds more like something Ashcroft would have done

http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs...ment-and-banks/
http://thehill.com/blogs/congress-blog/economy-budget/204174-operation-choke-point-harmful-to-flow-of-commerce

What started as a way of tracing networks and leaning on banks to shut down pay day loans appears to have grown to some strange monstrosity that targets everything regarded as unsavory - ammunition, tobacco, porn, pay day loans, medical and legalized marijuana, etc. Basically if it is regarded as a vice, they are getting frozen out of the banking industry, which cripples them as a business. Which is really bullshit, pass a law if you want to ban it. It is hard to gauge the extent of this operation, 90% of the sources out there are paranoid nutjob and political hack blogs. But what has popped up in verifiable sources does not sound good at all.

FYI, the political opposition to Operation Chokepoint is being drummed up almost entirely by the May Day 2014 (Free Markets Free People) organization, which just happened to share a booth with the Koch-funded Competitive Enterprise Institute at CPAC this year. They are pushing back hard on this because the focus of the DoJ effort is on payday loans and MLM schemes. Here's the video they put together for tomorrow's grassroots rally to protect the interests of payday lenders.

Facebook is still dog pictures and happy statuses; the workplace is hush-hush. Ugh, it's almost a curse to want to read about politics right now. It is so painful and depressing.

Besides porn, I'm not sure anything of value is lost here. And I'll take the loss if it means that pay day vultures are permanently and completely hosed.

Eh it's not really weird. To put it in less nuance than I would like, the people most affected are the ones least able to learn/grasp how broken it is let alone how to address the issues.

I feel like, if anything, the opposite is the case - whereas I grew up hearing that discussing politics was rude or inadvisable, nowadays if I strike up a conversation at a bar or whatever with somebody or at work, it's even odds whether it ends up being about baseball or politics. I don't really have any data to substantiate it, though.

To be fair, this is not so mysterious. It is widely assumed that Q1 was weak because of the harsh winter and weakness in export markets, and the FED continuing with the scheduled taper reassured markets that this thinking was correct.

Is it? I mean moving within the country isn't cheap, and when your rear end is broke that makes it really hard. Not even trying to factor in any sort of immigration process which, while most likely not a giant mess as much as the US's, would stil have quite a few hoops to jump through for any sort of country worth moving to.
