So if you like documentaries about horrible stuff I'd recommend Teen Killers: Life Without Parole. Bunch of guys who murdered people in their teens, now in their twenties and thirties, just talking about it, with family input on the side. It's pretty hard watching for a BBC3 thing, but very well done. Most of the killers end up seeming like normal people, even sympathetic in some ways. But that Torey guy, christ.

Similarly the Life And Death Row series on BBC3 was suprisingly well done. The second was especially good. http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b03z1yy3/Life_and_Death_Row_Judgement/

I ran out of films on a return overseas flight out to America the past few days (being in the same month, BA was still on the same set of selections in both directions), so went fiddling through the television offerings. Most of it was bleh, but they had the series finale of Toast of London (the one where Michael Ball plays Andrew Lloyd Webber's hitman). Yay! I love Matt Berry. Guy next to me on the plane was already at the whole experience as not only was it his first time flying to the UK, and he was a bit of a nervous flyer -- it was really turbulent and that was adding to his stress. He'd tried to watch a movie, but right in the opening few scenes of The Wolf of Wall Street is an aircraft 'in distress' as the warning informed him, so he was looking for something a bit lighter. He went full-on though because he asked what I was watching as I kept laughing ('Yes, I can hear you, Clem Fandango.'), decided to check it out as he'd 'never seen a British tv show before' outside of the usual PBS or BBCAmerica fare, and got to see two vaguely '70s style men doing voice over for a kissing scene in a German porno.

What an age we live in when we can watch tv on a nice monitor of our own on an international flight. My local bus service has an automated voice loudly declaring every upcoming stop including a few details about shops/attractions near to each stop. I can pay for things by waving a plastic card over a gadget. I think it's a Wall-E future for us all! Did anyone watch The Magic of Mushrooms? Didn't think much of the presenter and it felt like some of the show was handled by apprentice directors but the actual information in the show was great. Also, is it bad that I'm sort of missing Saturday Night Takeaway? I can't help but like Anton Deck.

I rather enjoyed it, other than using the same time lapse and "mushrooms falling past a camera in slow motion" footage about 8 times. As for the presenter, I thought he was perfectly amiable and I always prefer having someone doing science shows with a strong science background, the ones that use popular presenters rather than scientist-presenters are almost always insufferable.

I just thought there were a few to-camera bits where he looked/sounded tentative. Maybe it's just the way he speaks. Edit: just to add, cordyceps fungi will never not be terrifying.

Trickjaw posted:Yes, unless you are a nan. Especially if you can tell them apart. No seriously. When they were on Comic Relief, they appeared at the back of the audience, Ant on the left. They did their intro bit, ran to the stage and crossed over in the audience pit so that when they were on stage they'd be the right way round. My brother said this to me as a joke but now that I look, Ant is almost always on the left. You know, excepting the good old Byker Grove days.

Well not in the finacinal and job sense, more in the general feelings and opinions of some people. It is pretty obvious he is out there working and making money but he is about as popular as crabs from what I have heard online and in meatspace. Might just be my circle of offline and online contacts though.

Depends on your flight; there are actually lots of great films to choose from, but since I was on the same route within a 10 day period, I had watched all the ones I wanted to see (including Cool Hand Luke). BA's TV selections to and from the States, though, has always been a bit bleah in terms of stuff that interests me personally -- sometimes a Doctor Who episode, the occasional Blackadder, but a lot of it is US sitcoms and cartoons. I wasn't familiar with most of the shows on this run (I think most of them were American series, including Curb Your Enthusiasm, so I was surprised to see the Matt Berry stuff. If anyone is interested in BA's televisual offerings, here's the link (you can plug in various destinations to and from Heathrow) https://www.britishairways.com/en-gb/information/entertainment/in-flight-entertainment

Last episode and series of Rev was a massive downer. Up there with the ending of David the Gnome. St Saviours is closed and sold for development, Adam quits the church, sinks into depression and is to be kicked out of the vicarage, Colin's dog dies. At the end Adam and co break into St Saviours and have one last Easter service and christen his daughter. Even worse when you consider the BBC didn't go for another series so that's how they've left it.

How you can hate it is beyond me, Nev's awesome. Some of it looks pretty set up like the focus on ping pong tournaments and stuff but i cant blame them for wanting to spice up answering calls all day. I dont see how its that bad to be honest, it features a load of young people in an office and a larger than life boss, there's going to be a bit of banter. I know goons tend to detest that when its unironic for some reason but it could be much worse, i liked the lad with a stammer being given a chance even if it was for the cameras. I guess they could have a series about quiet lads and ladies that answer phones and every once in a while cynically say something sarcastic and this thread might love it but i think the call centre is better than average for bbc3 because its not another pointless "look at them getting drunk! look at them!" show (those are weird in themselves because they are oddly prudish considering the subject matter), id imagine a ton of bbc3's target audience actually work in them.

There's a world of difference between saying you don't want your girlfriend to associate with black people and accidentally mumbling the bad word in a very well-known rhyme though. It's not like he said, "I'll have a can of friend of the family, I mean, Tango please" either - the word is in the rhyme and it could easily slip out even (or especially) if you're focusing on not saying it.

I honestly can't imagine accidentally saying that, even if it is part of a rhyme. Especially if you work in broadcasting. He would probably be fired if this happened in America.

According to Clarkson they recorded that bit a few times, twice with him mumbling through it and one time using the word "teacher" instead. I don't know why he wouldn't have always done this rather than trying to obscure a racist word. I was always taught it with the word "tinker" instead personally.
