Or you can be the sort who washes plastic dinnerware to reuse at a later date. (I'm sadly guilty of that more often than not.) I don't even know where I'm supposed to begin with this thing.

I'm pretty sure that nobody brought either, someone just brought whole tangerines and looking it up, apparently when making that dish, you add hot water to it to make the ingredients meld better when cooking. It still looks like a pink hell though.

I just ate basashi, better known as raw horse meat. It did not change my life. I'd never eaten raw meat before, so I can't compare it to anything. It was served with sweet soy sauce, ginger, and a mild green onion which I think is called asatsuki (sp?. It was fine. Not much taste, aside from the sauce. I found the cooked horse far tastier. I posted this because I was a vegetarian for 20 years and gave it up less than a year ago. Been rereading the thread and saw stuff that made me sick the first time around...some of which I'd like to try now. Food is weird!

I ate partially undercooked chicken when really drunk once and regretted it immensely for the next 24 hours. I vaguely recall going "this chicken wing is kinda pink in the middle.. eh, whatever." Worst part is that it was from a pack of frozen wings that were supposed to be cooked already, just thaw and gnaw.

I know that because of the long-established place raw eggs have in Japanese cuisine, they've invested in the science and mechanisms to ensure those eggs are salmonella-free. l don't know if that means the same can be said about their chickens; I just know that chicken sashimi shows up on the occasional sushi menu, and that every Westerner who sees it (myself included) has an immediate, visceral reaction of NOPE. And it's a lot harder to overcome than, say, the squeamishness you might feel when encountering raw fish or horsemeat. It goes beyond "strange and maybe kind of gross" into some kind of evolutionary "not if you want to live" thing--more so than for, say, puffer fish, because that's still an exotic delicacy, not the ubiquitous staple chicken's become. That said, I don't know any Japanese who eat raw chicken, either. Cooking shows, recipes, and the like still emphasize making sure that poo poo is cooked through.

I would eat the poo poo out of raw chicken if it was served at a reputable restaurant, much like I would eat the poo poo out of any other raw meat. There are places in Japan that serve pork sashimi as well, and lemme tell you that stuff is heavenly.

I just can't imagine that raw chicken would be very tasty. Just cutting a piece of raw chicken with a kitchen knife goobs me out, I don't find the idea of chewing on it appealing. Speaking of unpopular foods and Japan, I snarfed a couple of natto temaki yesterday and that was pretty much glorious. The seaweed helps scrape the slime off the inside of your mouth!

Nothing tops a good scallop tartare with raw foie gras shavings, carpaccios, sashimis, or ceviches. But I also find veal liver, kidneys or pig feet delicious so maybe I don't really represent popular tastes... Lately I tried low temp salmon slowly cooked in marinade oil (60°C). It has the look of raw salmon and the consistency of heaven. SpaceGoatFarts has a new favorite as of 10:50 on May 6, 2014 |
