I'm mostly curious about how the hair and horns go through the helmet and what that would do to its structural integrity. :spergin:

I know I should think about the logic behind it, but why would you ride a bike if you have wings?

Crossposting from the AI chat thread because watching this blows my mind. Nothing to do with the electric bike aspect but rather the fact that the bike doesn't fall over. Pretty good demonstration of the principles that hold a bike off the ground. In other words, nothing to do with balance or the rider at all.

Reminds me of that one time when I stepped on to the morning shift on my summer job back in the days.
Some guy/gal from the night shift been doggedly trying to repair a part from the welding robots.

The part is the same size as a gallon jug and has 6x1-inch inside corner fillet welds. One of the sides was completely filled with weld.
You'd think that they would give it up when they burnt through the tenth time.

Oh, and the part was the front bumper crash tower for a car, do you think it passed inspection?

Is it the gyroscopic forces from the wheels, or what?

I guess I dont get whats so mindblowing here? The bike and rider are riding like normal, just on a dyno rather than on the road

Granted it looks weird, because it isnt moving forward, but nothing is happening that doesnt normally happen when you ride.

I'm more impressed with how he is able to keep it on the rollers within a few inches either direction.

This is very detailed but not a super useful link for someone who's trying to understand how a bike works, FYI.

The simplest way to put it is that single-track vehicles lean when they turn, and the leaning shifts the center of mass, so by turning slightly back and forth you can keep the center of mass underneath the vehicle. You do this imperceptibly and automatically when you're riding. The guy on that BMW is making tiny steering inputs that move the vehicle side to side along the rollers, and that movement is what's keeping it balanced. He's very good at it (he would be good at riding in a perfectly straight line) so the motions are almost imperceptible.

A bicycle or motorcycle with the headset locked straight forwards, so that it can't offset the front wheel relative to the rear, cannot stay upright.

e: and you say "nothing to do with the balance or rider at all." Right, it isn't strictly as simple as balancing the bike like you would a see-saw, but the rider definitely has control over it. The steering movements are needed to keep it upright. Bikes can balance themselves in a straight line without rider input (riding with no hands) because of the rake of the front fork -- having the wheel's contact patch behind the line the fork tube makes with the ground creates a feedback loop that tends to steer the bike back to center when its balance is upset. The steeper the fork, the harder it is to ride with no hands.

There's a video in that link of a TED talk which is quite helpful. He explains and demonstrates that the key is that the bike must steer into the lean to right it. The tendency for the bike to do this itself is not down to gyro nor rake alone. Rather, gyro, rake and the distribution of mass all cause the bike to turn into the lean and right itself. It's also demonstrated that you can do it electronically by detecting the lean and inducing steering to counter it, when all the other factors are negligible. I'm not sure how that would be useful as it would have to somehow know if I'm falling over or trying to turn.
