It's slightly amusing when I make a gap for a semi and some joker sees that as an opportunity to get 20 feet further up the road than they were and stuff their dumb rear end into the hole.. only to poo poo a brick when they notice a giant truck drifting into the space they're now occupying.

Sometimes they gun it and hope for the best, other times they jerk the wheel back the way the came, and the worst is when they jam on their brakes and make me drive even slower.

Ive been toying with getting a dash cam for about awhile now after reading this thread, and after what happened yesterday I'll be putting in an order on payday. Had dinner with the girlfriend, and on my way home there were three dudes hanging out by a power pole, and I was wondering what was going on as I didn't think it was a bus stop when one of the guys shoves the other and he falls flat on his back directly in the road in front of me. Had I not been looking at them I know full well I would have ran him over. I turned around on a side street and yelled at them, and they were all drunk as poo poo. I can't wait to get it and have every driver and pedestrian act amazingly for a few weeks. It'll be worth it just for that!

Today, as I was waiting behind another car to turn left, some turdface in his turdbucket Kia tried to cut in front of me from the street on the right to barge into the same street I was turning on to.

He had the most incredulous look on his face when I honked at him and didn't let him in.

So yeah, I've just ordered a Mobius cam with a few accessories, and I have a plan for a nice stealthy install similar to what the Techmoan guy has done. That huge rain sensor housing behind my rear view mirror has all kinds of space for hiding gadgetry.

You'll be happy you did, i absolutely love mine. It will cost extra to get the windows mount, and finding a cable long enough can be a pain, but after the initial install, it's a lovely little camera.

A word of warning: if yours stops recording and lights blink wierd, it's possible that your cable isn't delivering the juice that the camera needs. I had a 10 foot cable I bought off of amazon, and it wasn't supplying enough energy to keep the camera working. Maybe it was a bum cable, I don't know, but I swapped out for a shorter one and a usb extension, it works much better now.

The software is real nice, you can tell the camera to record upside down, and disable audio recording if thats your thing. I don't recommend it, you can always shout out car descriptions on the fly.

It also records loud expletives real well, too.

Just got my G1W. Dammit, why isn't there a metal screw anywhere near my fuse box? Running it through the lighter now (which is switched), but that cable is going to get annoying.

Also, does the windshield mount suck for everyone else? I can't get the ball tightened down much.
Is there any reason to use 5min v. 3min blocks?

Unfortunately, no. That would be a good one, but the mobius doesn't have a way of feeling an impact.

However, there are two work-arounds.

First, as long as you haven't replaced the battery with a supercapacitor, the camera can continue recording for ten seconds after power off. I would like it to record up to 20 or even 30 seconds, and this is a setting they probably could implement in a future update, but I don't want to put the effort into joining their forum to make that request.

Second, another setting can allow overwriting of oldest video files on the memory card. This way, you can continue recording without having to wipe the card yourself.

When you put these together, you can see how the camera can continue recording after a crash, or at least 10 seconds afterwards. If you're hooked up to battery, the camera will continue recording and may possibly (after many hours) overwrite an accident video. This is why I keep mine connected to the ACC line. Its not perfect, but it works in my installation. For the amount of money I put up, I think this is a fair feature set.

If you put a 32GB card in it, i think that's about 8 hours of footage at 1080p. But really, the most important bit to record is the one leading up to the crash, so i think having it hooked up to ACC power is fine.

Summer is off to a slow start, but cyclists are starting to share the road in greater numbers.

Kinda think I overreacted but better safe than sorry I guess. For reference cyclists usually occupy the space between the middle and right lanes around here, as they just do pretty much everywhere I guess.

Not the most visible bunch, but their rear light was eventually visible. Wish they had a front light.

This has pretty much confirmed I want a set of revolights for my own bicycle after I start cycling post-surgery this summer.

Apparently my car is wired for an auto-dimming rear view mirror, which is great because I've kind wanted one for a while. But it's doubly awesome because it means ignition-switched 12V power is available centimeters away from where my camera is going to sit, thus making the install ~100 times easier.

I guess what I'm saying is make sure to check for an easier power connection before committing to snaking a cable all the way across the roof lining, down the A-pillar and behind the dash :)

Why? If it's anything like the connection in my car, the plug for the mirror will have three wires. One is 12V, one is chassis ground and the last one is for undimming the mirror when the car is in reverse.

If you have a multimeter and a couple of pins (sewing needles will do) or short bits of thin wire, it's pretty easy to figure out the connections. The multimeter I'm using cost like $10 at the hardware store.

Of course, then you need a bit of electronics work to wire up the 12V->5V converter, but it's definitely on the simple end of wiring projects.

I've used these:

They are cheap and simple and since it's a buck-boost converter instead of a cheapo linear regulator it draws almost no overhead power and stays cool.

On the Mazdas, they have a dimming mirror kit so I looked optimistically at doing this. Turns out you have to tap the fuse box to install that too. Also, it is way too fancy to tap the way the do it, so even if I had the autodimmining mirror, I'd still be screwed. It taps an always on line and then runs a second line to the ignition to turn it on and off. It is like germans designed it.

Help me out guys. I bought a G1W about a month ago from a good seller on Amazon (recommended by the wire cutter website), e-prance or something.

In any case, camera has been great till about last week, when I noticed one day while driving home from work (2 hour commute each way) that the camera had stopped recording. I looked at the last video, the camera had simply stopped recording after completing a 5 minute video and never cycled to start a new one.

I read on different forums that the G1W firmware sometimes will stop recording when it reaches the end of a video cycle (3,5 minutes etc) and the card is almost full, instead of simply deleting the oldest video and continuing to record. People mentioned that this often happens if the cycle is anything but 3 minute loops. SO I set the camera to 3 minute loops and I thought it was fine up until this morning, when I noticed about 1.5 hours into my 2 hour commute, the camera had again stopped recording. It was on, functioning fine and I just pressed the record button and it started recording again. However I obviously can't use this as a dash cam if it randomly stops recording and needs to be monitored to make sure its doing its job. Sending it back to China after a month is out of the question.

I have a Kingston 16gb Class 4 or 6 in there right now, but just in case I ordered a Transcend 32gb Class 10 because I've read that it has good compatibility with the G1W cameras.

I assume that the camera itself may be borked though, which sucks because the recording quality, audio, is all top notch.

In any case, can I fix this somehow if the card is not the culprit or am I better off getting a G1W-H or G1W-C? I prefer to get the G1W-H because it has a better view angle of 140 and is all black so its less conspicuous, is it really worth getting a G1W-C with a capacitor?

Where do you guys recommend I get it from? The NYC spy shop has the G1W-C for 69.99 -> http://www.spytecinc.com/g1w-c-capacitor1080p-hd-car-dash-camera.html
They are local to me and I could go down there and pick it up, reputable seller.

I can also order the G1W-H from FoxOffer for 56.99, or I can get it from estore009 on ebay, another reputable recommended seller http://www.ebay.com/itm/310830749213?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649, this one would cost 65.99.

What should I do?

Yep, however, they don't have the H, only the C and I kind of want the H more, wondering if 20 degrees of view angle is worth it.

Generally I would say that a wider angle lens is better, at least up to 140-150° or so, in order to better see crossing traffic or other cars in roundabouts. Beyond that you get way too much fisheye effect.

But I guess it's best to see for yourself:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Oxa55qF88A

Wide angle lenses can also be kind of a two-edged sword. They make stuff look like it's farther away, which in some cases can make it hard to read license plates. Compare the Mobius cam with the wide lens and the standard lens on this video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-BytEb6LDkk

Personally, I would probably get the H over the C, for the slightly wider angle lens, and the all-black housing (although that is pretty easy to replicate with a bit of tape).

My G1W had been working great the last couple months. Now it's stopping recording randomly. I missed two different videos I wanted this weekend.

One was of, what I swear was, a yellow LaFerrari driving in the hills above Austin. My wife saw it also so I know I wasn't seeing things. I have no proof tough as the cam cut out 3 minutes earlier.

Nothing has changed on it and the settings are all the same. It's so frustrating. It seems to be cutting out when changing to a new recording file. I'm going to try reformatting the SD card completely and seeing what happens.

From what I gather, a number of cams have an issue where they will stop recording once the card is full, instead of recording over the oldest file.

Which brand, size and speed card are you using? Apparently class 10 cards can be finicky, and class 4/6 are the ones to go for.

The first thing I'd try is to reformat using the camera. If that doesn't help, try a different card.

It sounds like that could very well be a memory card issue. I had similar problems a page or two back and googled to find more info. Apparently the G1W really likes Transcend cards, and it likes slow class 4/6 cards. Anything else is a YMMV situation. I'd try another memory card, if problems persist you could probably return it. When you bought it from E-Prance through Amazon was it "fulfilled by Amazon", or did they ship it to you straight from China? If it was fulfilled by Amazon then returns are super easy, they'll give you a shipping label and credit your account for the purchase price. That is what I had to do in the end, but the second G1W I ordered from e-prance immediately after returning the first one has been working as expected.

I actually just got to hardwiring it into my car yesterday. I stole Wickerman's idea from page 3 and used a mini-fuse tap along with a 12V to 5V 2x USB Converter. It is great, plus with the second usb spot you can put another cord coming out of your dash to charge your phone if you wanted, leaving your cigarette lighter spot free at all times. Having the wires hidden looks a lot better.

When I was having problems with my G1W stopping recording at random times, I just disabled the setting that shuts off the display after X minutes. With the display always on, I could keep an eye on it and was able to see a "CARD ERROR" or similar message when it stopped. That's when I found out that it didn't like my Sandisk 32GB class 4 card. It would be nice if it gave a visible warning in this situation but given the rest of the firmware/instructions/cost I can't really be surprised, or complain much.

The Great Twist
Haven't had any issues with my DVR-007 over a year now. I pull the card out every once in a while to check that it's actually recording and, besides the 2-3 second gaps in between the 15-minute files, it misses nothing. Only thing I've managed to record of any interest is me plowing into the back of a yellow cab though, didn't really want to save that video :v:

It's since been dethroned by the G1W as the go-to camera but from the looks of things that might've been a little premature. Seriously, the firmware is the most important part, if it's list of problems includes 'stops recording at random times for no reason' it shouldn't be anywhere near a list of recommended cameras, ever. I'm buying one of these as a gift and I'm probably just going to stick with the DVR-007.

I bought a Mini 0801 for a car that's mainly used at night. After watching reviews online, it seemed to deliver decent night time shots at a low price ($200 - delivered to Iceland, with customs and taxes included as well as a 32GB microSD card and a GPS unit). As this is a company car, I had it professionally installed. That cost the company about $120, which in my mind is second only to highway robbery.

The only problem I've had with it is the GPS mount. The camera won't stay on if you use the GPS mount to supply power, but it's not a huge issue.

Nothing of note has happened after installing it, apart from this tumble a drunk driver had a few months ago:

No one was injured, apart from someones wallet.

Here's a clip of its normal use. Nothing happens in the video, but it does show the image quality we're seeing during night time. A feature I'm happy about is the ability to read license plates of most cars in front of me.
