Ain't easy looking this eggstraordinary.

Hey everyone, this is kind of an open-ended sort of question so I hope I'm not being too vague, but my fiance and I are moving into a new apartment complex in a month where they have UVerse as the required TV/Internet provider. I'm told I have to call them and set up the 'standard package' and then any upgrades I would choose.

Looking on their website (and the OP here), it seems like that's going to be:
U-Family - 130 Channels - $59/month
Pro Internet - 3mbps down - $29.95/month for 12 months

For roughly $90/month. Is this a correct assumption? And then, just in general, are there any need to knows about AT&T? I'm coming from Brighthouse, who I've never really been enamored with, and I've also been told that since this is a new apartment complex, it's been wired with fiber, which may just be a dumb way to upsell their service. Any help or further reading is appreciated!

My girlfriend and I are getting everything ready to switch over to AT&T. I have a used Nokia 920 coming in the mail that I plan to use for awhile and she's going to contract with either an iPhone or Nokia 1020. The kicker is that I forgot she still had one month left on her Sprint contract. I figure I could switch over to AT&T now and then add her to my account in a month when her contract ends. Are there any reasons why she should or shouldn't just break contract now, pay the ETF, and make the jump with me. Or on the flip side any reasons why I should or shouldn't just wait the month for her contract to end and we both sign up at the same time?

The plan is ultimately to do Tier 1 with 6 gigs of mobile share, one phone on contract and one phone off contract.

A few suggestions:

First, don't have your girlfriend go on-contract with ATT. Just have her join off-contract like you. If she needs a new phone check ebay/craigslist/swappa for whatever ATT compatible phone she's interested in or do the Next program offered by ATT. ATT charges more per-line for contract phones vs. off contract and this almost always results in being charged more money.

Second, you should go with the 10GB plan instead of the 6GB. Since ATT charges $10 less per line starting at the 10GB tier ($15 vs. $25) you'll end up paying the same amount of money for two lines on 10GB that you do for two lines on 6GB.

I'd suggest you go ahead and sign up for a 10GB plan whenever you get your 920 and then add a line for your girlfriend whenever she's ready to move over. You'll be paying $115/month for just you and then $130/mo (+Next) once your girlfriend gets added.

This depends on the phone being purchased. If he does the 10 GB plan (which makes sense for the reasons provided), it's mostly everything, but notably NOT the two phones they're considering, since $25 (off-contract/NEXT discount) * 24 months (contract length) = $600, and the Lumia 1020 is $610 and an iPhone 5s is 650. If she goes for a 5c, then it makes sense. Granted, it might be worth paying the extra bit of money over that timeframe just to be able to leave the plan at any time.

I'm not exactly sure what our data requirements will be once we get off of Sprint. We don't use much data right now (less than 1GB combined), but that's partly because our data on Sprint is complete poo poo and using it is a pain. I know our usage will go up, but I'm not really sure by how much. The 6GB was a safe estimate on my part and I feel like we'd probably be fine with 4GB too. Can we swap data limits on the fly (paying accordingly, of course) or do I need to have that nailed down from the start?

ATT Next is better with every phone on the 10GB shared data plan.

iPhone 5S with two year contract: $199. ATT plan is $40 a month over 24 months

iPhone 5S with next: $15 + $25 (next) which means plan Of $40 a month over 26 months. Ends up being $150 cheaper give or take.

Quick question. Anyway to put your account on hold if I'm out of country for extended periods as a civilian? What if I'm not on a contract? I have grandfathered unlimited data I'd rather not lose. I've used it in the past for deployment with no issue but pretty sure she somehow ran my social to make sure I was in. Or at least that's the impression I got.

I'm on the mobile share value plan 10GB, and this month I used more data than usual and I'm at 0.6GB left. I turned off data on mine and my wife's phone and I've got 5 days left on my billing cycle. This weekend I'm going to be out and about and I'd like to use a bit of data. I know i can let it go over and get charged $15 for 1GB, but I wondered, could I switch to the 15GB Mobile Share Value plan temporarily, get the extra 5GB, and then after this weekend switch back to the 10GB plan, then would I only be charged for the 15GB plan for the few days I was on it? Or would I be stuck paying for the 15GB plan all next month?

Yes and no. It won't be automated. So you will have to make two phones calls to get it done. Or try ATT.com.

So, I can definitely go in right now and change it to the 15GB plan. But how long after I mash the button on the site is it until it takes affect? And then will it keep me from changing it back on say Monday?

I don't think this is going to work out the way you want it.
For example:
Up until that weekend you have used 9 GB of 10 GB. You change the plan to 15GB on Friday. By Sunday you've used 12GB. Monday you change it back to 10GB. I imagine you still get charged for the overage because you have used 12GB during that bill cycle while now currently only having a 10GB plan.
Analogy: You have a 10 Gallon bucket, but you need to hold 13 gallons until the end of the month. You can't "rent" a 15 gallon bucket for the weekend when you need to last the rest of the month; because you'll have to spill out the extra when you go back to your 10 gallon bucket.

You should probably just nut up and pay the overage or keep the 15GB through the end of the bill cycle. Knowing how limp wristed AT&T Customer Care is, they will probably just make a credit for it anyway.

Endless Mike

I think you can do it, but they only prorate you for the time you spend, so you only get an additional 5 GB/30 days = 167 MB per day. If it's anything like Verizon, you can also make it retroactive to the start of the month, so you just pay for whatever the 15 GB is for that month.

Only if you don't have data already. If you go to a corporate store you won't be charged for a SIM. If you had an iPhone previously some thing will need to be reprovisioned on your account to make sure your data works properly.

Wow, so the gf and I got a new plan, and we decided to go with the 10 GB plan because it had great value and apparently I used a ton of data on my parents' plan. We have 14 days left in our billing cycle, and the two of us have used almost 0.5 GB. I think this is because my gf never uses much data, and since I'm paying for the plan, I've been making sure to stay on wifi as much as possible.

This seems like a huge no-brainer of stepping down our data plan to 4, maybe even 2 GB, right?

Doing the math, it looks like I really only see savings switching to the 2 GB plan, since our FAN is a pretty nice discount, and they gently caress with the device and Mobile Share fees as you change the data.

So, I can just go with the 2 GB plan, and if we start approaching that limit, then I can bump it back up?

Yes you can bump it back up.

Oh, RIP Beefstorm, who is leaving ATT. Random ATT thing is declining deductibles for insurance. Over the next few months insurance deductibles go down after 6 and 12 months of no claims, which is kind of nice. More like that to come out, maybe I'll post up a synopsis for the OP later.

What impacts him more is the work discount, which goes off $100 of the 10Gb plan, but only $70 and $40 for the 4 and 2GB plans respectively.

The 4GB plan for 2 lines adds up to $120 before taxes and discount, the 10GB $130, so even without the work discount I would either do the 2GB if you are a small usage family or the 10 of larger.

It would specifically say you are eligible for a 2yr upgrade if you were 2 year eligible.

Attention AT&T Goons. Ergonomics. Kind of useful.
I went to the chriopractor yesterday because I was having severe shoulder pain. He took x-rays. He looks at them and almost instantly said, "Do you look down at something all day?" "Yes. An iPad. It's how I sell phones." "Yeah you need to not do that. For like awhile."

You see AT&T Goons. Our ipads we stare at all day, at least for me, are typically on a counter or low surface. And I look down ALL DAY when selling phones.

Most peoples necks are alligned somewhere between this...

code:
| | Face here

and this.
code:
\ \ Face Here
\ \
  \ \

My neck is currently like this.
code:
      / / Face Here
     / /
    / /
   / /
  / /
/ /
/ /
In short, dont look down at your ipad all day. Get your manager to get you one of the ipad stands with keyboard attachment. Don't ruin your neck like I did. I am currently stuck in a chair without an ipad. Which, I'm sure most of you wouldn't complain about. But this is the worst pain ever.

Biggest hurdle I see is what direct TV probably had issues with: getting people to get that version of cable without also being able to offer unlimited home Internet (exception of course being UVerse markets).

Me, I'm just excited to hopefully get cheap TV (employee pricing) and I really hope this distracts from the digital life sales pressure (not gonna happen).
