Good lord are those long-winded and unfunny. Kinda neat seeing all of the iterations the characters went through before this show but drat are they a hard watch.

"What the gently caress is wrong with you, Justin?" "What? What?" "We could never put that on TV!" "Why not?" "Rape isn't funny." "It's not?" "What the gently caress is wrong with you, Justin?!?"

I just tracked down the uncensored version if you dare to watch that. Here's the link! The missing footage is the crazy old fake porn clip where a guy shoves his head up a woman's vagina

If I've learned anything today, it's that maybe the best thing is to just enjoy Rick & Morty as it is now. Previous incarnations really make me question the creators sanity.

Can I just say, as the OP of the Community thread, how goddamn weird it is we're thanking Dan motherfucking Harmon for being there to rein someone in?

All those are great little pieces of twisted humor. Which is the best humor. Especially when they are 5 minutes long. Also, now that a cool looking T-Shirt is out I now know it's OK to make one. So Waffleopolis your dream shirt will come true. (Also because I was going to make one kind of like it. Except a parody off of these "parody" shirts, all the while being one itself.)

I saw they had the portal design once, I kinda like that better but I guess their business model is "get it now or never or on ebay maybe I don't know not my problem"

Check your email. It's still processing, but I got a confirmation email. Perhaps it charged me 5 times for it. Oh well. That's their fault, not mine.

Yeah, I got an email after my second attempt at it and my PayPal account shows a payment to them, even though it never left the Processing page.

Rocksicles posted:Hilarious, but that weird porn was crossing the line a bit. That just means he did it right then, since he was trying to over do it. But the path of a creator isn't just "BOOM" I got it right the first time, you have to swing and miss and explore and fail and learn. It helps anyone get better at what they do and probably allowed him to make the excellent world and characters of Rick and Morty (along with a lot of help from Dan Harmon). I like a lot of his funny stuff and hope he continues to make "out there" stuff that isn't afraid of censorship. It will probably only help him define the line for the show. Plus Doc Brown asking somebody to lick his balls is just funny to me no matter what.

I love the old prototypes of Rick and Morty, they really highlight the fact that it took Roiland years to develop them as characters (and develop himself as an artist) before they got where they are today.Cuddly Tumblemumps posted:They remind me of a lot of alt comics that just don't give a gently caress because it is what it is*, but then Rick and Morty has a broader audience that might not be in tune with how loving alt comics and less then mainstream stand-up comedy can get; the reactions from these non-alt comic people are precious gold, whether they get into the groove of awfulness or close their browser window and dry-heave. You'll be completely unsurprised to learn that Roiland used to draw alt comics himself (there's a bunch of them on his site) a few which later got turned into animated shorts.

Alrighty, here it is so far. I'm going to add some shading and a few halftones to give it some more colors, but any suggestions would be appreciated. The letters, and wording isn't final. Just a place holder.

Just to add to the insanity of knocking off what is in a sense a knock off.

I HATE HATE HATE those stupid Justin Rowland short things, not because they're gross or anything but because they're lazy and just lovely, but I swear to god the Rick and Morty stuff is some of the most entertaining television I've seen in years. Thanks for posting these little previews/commercials for the show.

I on the other hand experienced a very special joy after the deliberately over the top but funny pornographic ''how is this on YouTube'' thing I'd occasionally link around somehow got made into a full budget animated short. It was like learning the goatse guy later went on to win the Olympics or something. Just impossible and would have been laughable if I hadn't seen it happen.

I disagree with the lazy part. It's just having fun and making whatever comes to your mind. Justin, I'm assuming, is a guy who just enjoys making things. He likes thinking up some crazy idea and just going for it. The outcome may work, or it may not. It doesn't matter, because he made something. I do this all the time. I made a 35 minute movie about what happened to the Cloverfield monster after the movie came out. Barely anyone on youtube has seen it. A lot of people who saw it didn't get it. But who cares? I wanted to make it, and I made it. More fuel for the creative train. Sometimes it's fun to just do whatever you want and not give a crap what people think about it. But other times, it's super rewarding to make something that people will love and be affected by. I don't think that Justin sat there writing nonsense and then having Dan come in and piece it together. I think Justin and Dan put all they had into every script they wrote to try and create the best story they possibly could. All these Proto Rick and Morty things were important stepping stones to creating this show. Every single short has an important piece that helped create this masterpiece of a show. Maybe you don't like 'em, and that's fair, but I think it's wrong to call them lazy.

Taken as a process, sure, but self contained they are pretty lovely with overdrawn jokes that are stale and one noted and unoriginal - that's what I mean by lazy, not that it doesn't take an amount of work to create output. They are an 8 year old's version of what humor is. I get that you want to defend him, but note I'm not saying he's a bad person or anything, simply that when a person is yet again raping a kid, or loving a kid in their shoulder, or cutting their face off, it's just...it's the torture porn of humor. There's nothing else to it. It's a little kid yelling 'Penis!' at a supermarket. It's 'technically' part of what humor can be, in that it pushes against expectations and societal norms of behavior, but without anything else to it, it's a very singular, unrefined and lazy way to do it. It's absolutely fine that you find it enjoyable, and if it gets further creative juices rolling in the guy's mind then fantastic, but at best they're really really unfunny boring lovely roughdrafts to a final version that is great.
