Yay I converted someone :)

Basically look into any band Lasse Pyykkö has been in or worked with.

Claws
Hooded Menace
Phlegethon
Swarming
Vacant Coffin
Acid Witch
Shrouded
Decrepitaph

Also bands that they've done splits or whatever with.

Anima Morte
Coffins
Asphyx
Ilsa
Horse Latitudes

Everything everyone else posted is correct and true, I'm only posting another because I really think the new Vastum album, "Patricidal Lust" is TOP NOTCH slow, groovy, catchy, and raw death and I won't stop talking about it until everyone loves it.

Death doom! I tend to like the stuff closer to funeral doom, which is my favorite metal style along with tech death, tech thrash and power metal.

diSEMBOWELMENT are one of the best 1-album bands out there. The atmosphere evoked by Transcendence into the Peripheral is indescribable.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMxiafweCGI

Evoken and Esoteric go even further into funeral doom:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zWKVxaJS7M0

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iCGNI6uPZls

These are the three pillars of the death/funeral doom style for me.

Ceremonium and Dusk are great, and have small and consistent discographies, but they're closer to straight-up death doom.

Gumbel2Gumbel posted:

Meshuggah you have to be in the mood for and pretty much listen to the whole album.

I've listened through C33, Nothing, and Chaosphere attentively on several occasions. I do like Fred's solos, but the songwriting is really bad at building tension, and like I've said there's almost no melodic content of interest.

Since discovering that album last year it has quickly become an all-time favourite. I dig lots of funeral/death-doom stuff, but nothing else I've heard comes close. It really is incomparable in both sound and atmosphere.

They were actually kind of mediocre when I saw them with Between the Buried and Me, but fantastic seven months later when they were playing Focus in its entirety. Paul seemed blazed out of his mind the first time and the setlist was all Traced in Air, with the exception of Celestial Voyage and Wheels Within Wheels. I was worried they would be boring again on the Focus tour, especially in comparison to Intronaut, who were opening, but they killed it.

That sounds pretty killer. I still haven't listened to kindly bent to free us because I heard a bit from one song and it sounded like Aeon Spoke but not as moderately listenable, but I'd be really bummed if I saw a poor showing of Traced.

I had the radio on in the car the other day with the volume low, and I heard what initially sounded like a new Metallica song only more interesting than anything they've done in the past two decades. Turns out it was Hail To The King by Avenged Sevenfold. Pretty rockin song, considering I really never cared for them until now.

Spinning Massacre's "From Beyond" today. It's pretty cool how it's very heavily derived from Slayer while adding some crunchier production, growls, and rhythmically abrupt chromatic bits to make it even more jarring. Classic Florideath.

They're aiming for the Black Album, that's for sure. I actually think they would be a bit more tolerable if the singer didn't sound like Axl Rose and Goofy's bastard child. Also they all have lovely stage names like M. Shadows, Synyster Gates, and Wikkid Evyl (okay I made that last one up but it's close enough in spirit)

http://willowtip.bandcamp.com/album/cultivate-the-apostate

a little less than halfway through so far. The production has been off-putting (I love the grimey, Omnicide sound)as have the super traditional dm vox. Riffs are serviceable but the first few songs seemed to be trying to recreate that Omnicide sound. Some of the riffs sounding like they were just straight up lifted from that album.

with 13 songs all at that 4:30-5 minute range, this album might be too much for one sitting, which sucks.
