This is ridiculous. They don't have "conclusive" endings because they completely arbitrarily cut off at 10 minutes. Well the 10 minute cutoff isn't arbitrary because it is the exact minimum of time needed for a video to run the more expensive full ads. No matter what happened in a video, they "sign off" as soon as they can be bothered after 10 minutes because that's all they need to maximize ad revenue and maximize video output.

I agree with the other guy that game grumps are terrible in the same ways other bad youtube channels are and its weird that this thread presents them as different (also egoraptor is literally one of the dumbest persons I've ever heard speak). I just thought it was funny that the dark souls community would be the one to call them out on not even trying to play games because they need to be "zany" or whatever.

Pretty much what the Dark Souls community does is poo poo on people for playing games wrong. Granted this is one of the few times they'd be actually right but whatever.

And yeah Game Grumps are pretty typical YouTuber trash and this thread praising them while simultaneously condemning others who aren't different is a pretty bizarre double standard. Like, more power to you if you can get into the zany antics of these two men in particular but they're not doing anything different from the many other YouTube personalities doing zany things.

I'll be honest, it was Game Grumps that introduced me to Let's Plays. They used to be far, far different from what they are now. And not just talking about the difference between Jon and Danny, but even different from a few months ago.

With Jon and Arin, GG was a show that I genuinely liked because it was two dudes playing a game and having a great time. They riffed off each other, they made fun of each other, they ripped on the game if it was bad or said what they liked about it when it was good. Sure Arin's kind of a dick and Jon screamed a lot but they were funny (to me) and I enjoyed them.

When Jon left the atmosphere changed, but only slightly. Danny didn't have as much interest in games past 1990 and most of the episodes were him watching Arin play and contributing stories, but even those could be pretty funny. But as time went on you could tell it was Arin running the show and a lot of the back-and-forth I enjoyed was gone because Danny was clearly under his thumb.

Then it got to a point where each episode had a formula: Arin plays a game without paying attention to the rules, he bitches and moans about how it sucks when the viewer is going crazy over him missing a major detail, Danny tells 5 stories, Arin acts like what a white guy who's never seen a "gangsta" thinks a "gangsta" is, and then they told you to subscribe, something they've made fun of others in the past for over and over.

I understand that some of the other changes I won't go into detail about (awkward new social media interaction, involving his wife, etc) are clearly business moves because now they're NOT just two guys playing video games - they are a legitimate business that makes money. But the formulaic structure and the disappointing shift of power is what made me stop watching.

Also, their fan base SUCKS.

They'll often do a 15 or even 20 minute video if they feel they haven't done enough, or if they're at the finale and want to present it as one episode.

I've never even played Dark Souls and I knew exactly what would happen when they started playing it. They'd dick around and the Dark Souls community would give them poo poo for it, because Dark Souls is Serious Business to a lot of people.

They're not amazing or anything but they have some funny moments and they aren't as obvious about their money-shilling as a lot of people and they seem to appreciate their fans so I'm not sure why everyone is so angry?

Probably not really good by SA standards, but when Danny hunkers down with an old game he knows something about and wants to show off, the usual GG priorities of "making comedy first, gameplay second" shifts a little. You'll still get things like reading text aloud, skeevy jokes and meme-ifying things, but they get poo poo done a lot quicker.

Yeah, that's kinda what I meant earlier. They're not doing it because they're having a good time, they're doing it because it's become their job in the most literal sense and now they're stuck doing it, so they just kind of do the bare minimum required so they can pay their bills (also like doing a job you hate!). I think that's why the offensive material has stepped up lately; they're just at a loss for anything interesting to say so they poop out whatever shits into their mind, and if that's some gross sexual poo poo then so be it, who needs to give an audience like theirs credit anyway?

I feel like what they really need to do is set up Patreons for their respective creative endeavors, maybe advertise them a bit for a month or so with ominous hinting, then put out a video saying, "look guys, you know and we know that Grumps is poo poo now, we're not having fun with it anymore, so if you want to see more from us donate to these Patreons so we can get paid to do things we love, but that isn't Grumps anymore so let's just let it die."

To be honest, I think that's rather commendable - it shows some degree of quality control on the part of Game Grumps as a whole that when one of their members crosses a line, they remove it from the final product. Maybe they don't always do it, but if you want to say "Game Grumps are racist" as opposed to "one member of Game Grumps is racist and the collective rejects those views", you should probably find a better example for that.

Roman Reigns
Aug 23, 2007

I found a lot of their earlier stuff funny, with Dan and Jon both, but some of the videos they've been releasing recently I found more annoying and frustrating than funny. In addition to what a lot of people are saying about GG bitching about games they're playing, they have a habit of stopping and not finishing a playthrough, usually because they encounter a section or a boss to difficult for them to beat. They had a pretty funny Sparkster LP going and abruptly stopped doing it since they encountered a single boss Arin and Dan couldn't beat.

Then there was that one LP they had going with South Park: The Stick of Truth where one of the others guys with Arin (not Dan) flat out spoiled the poo poo out of the game and talked over the dialogue the entire time. They did this in every video they put out, regardless of fans in the comments telling them to cut that poo poo out. That LP remains unfinished too (thankfully, I suppose).

So I don't know. I'll still check out videos they release for right now, but my interest in them is starting to dim.

This is basically the point I was trying to make. It's harder to use it properly to make something actually funny, professionals have a hard enough time with it. Plus it's just like everything else, if you run it into the ground, then it runs very thin.

Yeah no I totally agree. Like the way I phrased it kind of sounds like I feel sorry for them but really I think it's ultimately mostly Arin's fault? Like if Arin had made a few changes to his style to accomodate the fact that Danny is a way different person than Jon they might both still be having a lot more fun actually making the episodes and the show might still be funny. Like, in the old days when Arin pushed Jon would push back, but Danny's more of a "roll with it" guy and Arin's still pushing, so basically Arin's trying to have a wrestling match with a guy who showed up expecting to dance and neither one's having fun because they either can't (probably Dan) or won't (certainly Arin) work with the other guy on his level.

I don't think she's the reason Jon left; in fact, I have something of a crackpot-type theory for why Jon left.

Watch this video for an early promo for Steam Train (before Jon left Game Grumps):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Afr3aO3jtn0

Notice how awkward the post-promo video is? (Starts at :38.) How it's played off as a joke but Arin is clearly upset and Jon tries quickly to repair the damage he's done?

My theory is that this is the beginning of the end of Game Grumps with Jon. I would also note that this promo, edited by Barry, was deleted from their channel a few hours after being uploaded.

Yes. Exactly that. Whether or not she "deserves" to be married to Arin is 100% what I was talking about and not a weird misinterpretation at all. Also, marriages and sex are things you earn by acquiring some kind of merit points and not something that opinions have any effect on, which is not at all a much creepier implication than my opinion, so kudos for not having alarming ideas about social dynamics.

Look, sarcasm aside Arin obviously is happy with her and that's the end of it, and my comment was just an ill-considered choice of words.
