Has anybody read Ed Piskor's Hip-Hop Family Tree? I'm absolutely loving the Free Comic Book Day issue, and I have the illustrated history of The Beats that he did with Harvey Pekar. I'm also a sucker for musical history.

Scyfy just accounced it's going to be creating 4 tv shows based on comic books. Chief among them is Hickman's Pax Romana and Miller's Ronin. The other two are Letter 44 and Clone.

It definitely read like a personal narrative, so I wondered where the author drew his inspiration from; if it was himself, that'd certainly explain the detail!! I might have to look into the full volumes!

I wasn't reading comics then but was reading Southern Bastards #1 like reading Walking Dead #1? Because god drat it just feels like something special. I'll be surprised of this isn't called up for a TV show or something in the next 5 years.

I can understand that (that is probably a bit to problematic to tackle) but I don't know how they are going to bridge the gap between Rome and WWII. You could go a lot later than roman times to stop that.

I loved that it takes the overused setting and plays it up to 11 without pretending to be safe and grounded in reality. Nailbiter #1 released this week, horror comic with a really solid premise: "There's a tiny town in Oregon that's been the birthplace of 16 different serial killers. What's the deal?" Review: http://www.comicvine.com/reviews/nailbiter-1/1900-2994/ Haven't read work by the author, Joshua Williamson, before, but I liked the art and this issue's writing was solid enough. Clearly, a lot about the quality of this series is going to depend on pacing and whether the central mystery's resolution is any good, but there are a whole bunch of plot-balls tossed into the air to start, and I'm interested in seeing how they'll fall.

Usagi Yojimbo is a samurai epic that follows a ronin warrior as he travels feudal Japan, offering his services as a bodyguard and getting into trouble fighting for truth, justice and the bushido way. He's also a rabbit, but not in the weird internet way, this is the cool kind of animal dude. The series has been on hiatus for a while (As far as I can tell, the creators wife is seriously ill and he has been taking care of her. From the description and past interviews with Sakai, this is the War of the Worlds aliens showing up. Now if you'll excuse me I have to go cut myself and try not to bleed on the 24 trades that I have as I look longingly at those omnibuses.

I feel like this is a weird thing to take away from Nailbiter but I felt like the namesake character's "modus operandi" is a little... lame? Like, when I learned how the murderer targets victims it was a little deflating. That's probably a weird thing to say about someone who murders people but I've also been on a BIG Hannibal Lecter kick recently watching the movies/show and re-reading the books so I'm a little tuned to expecting more violent/grandiose themes, I guess.

All of this in the course of 5 minutes, basically. I'll give it another issue but the second one needs to have a good hook. The art is fine but the writer needs more focus. The dialog feels really scripted and I can't help but read everyone in a low monotone.

I still really like the hook so will follow for a while, but people who want to know what they're getting into may want to wait several issues to see where consensus falls.

Seemed like a great premise and would be an excellent young adult thriller novel, really. But it looks like it might even go darker what with some of the hints of gore in a couple of scenes. And speaking of young adult novels, Shan's "Bad Blood" just wrapped up this week with far more of a whimper than a bang, but I'd still say it's worth reading through the five issues because the premise, "kid dying of cancer winds up poisoning vampires with his chemo-treated blood," was really solid. Also, if you haven't checked it out, read the miniseries "Buzzkill" about a superhero whose powers come from drugs and alcohol and how it's ruining his life.

I'm reading through Chew again and it still holds up. The issues actually go by pretty fast at first until Guillroy starts going crazy with the easter eggs, but reading it in trade sized chunks is pretty satisfying.

You can tell the author tried to distance himself a little from the subject matter and provide an objective, albeit brief, look at Andre's life. Also, though the art style is kid friendly, much of the subject matter is definitely not. Also, things I learned: Samuel Beckett gave Andre rides to school in the back of his truck as a favor to Andre's father.
