Listen I've been to these integration programs they are actually required before you even get out of the military. They are very helpful and I do strongly encourage them. What I'm pissed about is how dare someone sit there and tell me or anyone else that I need to be nurtured and not be aloud near a gun because I might "snap". That's just ignorant, how about all those veterans who become cops once they get out? Take my cousin for example he did two tours in Iraq as a combat medic dude saw the worst of it. Without a doubt he had PTSD but he wasnt a threat to anyone, he became a cop and drat fine one until the day he died. Not once did he lose his poo poo and start shooting people cause he "snapped". PTSD doesn't mean you are insane it means you've seen a lot of hosed up poo poo that you just can't ever forget now. You learn to adjust your life and move on.

Very true! PTSD won't make you snap or go completely insane and it's good she pointed that out, as it's really a pervasive myth that needs to die.

She's still a loving idiot though.

The Communist governments in Eastern Europe actually had a problem because people did the bare minimum they needed to do, because between the generous unemployment insurance, enough money to buy new luxury goods whenever they wanted and the labor shortage it meant that there was little incentive to make a real effort. If they fired you, so what? The fact that you needed party connections to advance (and better hope no one in your family said something dumb) probably didn't help, either. Of course, at that point the labor shortage should have meant that everyone had to work harder to make sure the work gets done, but that didn't happen. I'm not going to argue that it is a good graph (its LL101), but I find that believing that everyone is just like you and wants to do things is a bit optimistic.

Yeah, I'll agree it's optimistic to believe that everyone wants to work hard and leave their mark on the world, but at the same time in your example I'd put more emphasis on the oppressive regime that made the individual worker feel worthless with no chance of advancement being the reason why people put in the bare minimum of effort. The fact that they had all these social safety nets in place is good for them, but even without them in that kind of situation I'd imagine low effort being the norm.

Case in point, I used to work as a supervisor for a private security firm that, surprise-surprise, treated its employees like dirt and underpaid them. Most of them put in the absolute barest minimum of effort because putting in extra effort barely got them a pat on the back and was 99% of the time superfluous anyways. There's nowhere near the safety nets in this country, and yet I saw the same behaviors you are attributing to safety nets. And of course my bosses couldn't fathom the fact that people were being layabouts when they were asked to do a job that should've paid them double what it did, treated them like children, and when myself and another of the supervisors left, they hired from outside the company instead of promoting someone from within and finding a new entry-level person to fill the old position.

Edit: I am just super mad at LL101 for going off on "those lazy good-for-nothings" when a lot of that kind of behavior is due to getting poo poo on by higher-ups, and that saying the only time people will be productive is imminent threat of starvation. From my experiences it just rubs me the wrong way.

I'm not an economist by any means, but I can't help but ask:

If everyone made a minimum income, and then people who had a job had income from that on top of it, wouldn't people who worked still be better off? (As if that matters) and so people who don't want to "work" for a living get just that: a living. People who want more than that (luxury) get jobs. Plus, the fact that they're at work at all shows they are willing and able to perform their task. And then, if you balance the taxes so most of that subsidization for the poor comes from the very highest earners, there would be practically no reason for the people with crappier jobs to grumble about the people who just use their government stipend to live.

That's the system I imagine, and I don't understand why anyone would begrudge another person basic existence as long as they can have better stuff, whenever they want it and the person sitting on their rear end, uh, can't.

I know it's unworkable, but it only seems unworkable because of people's preconceptions of justice and "how the world works".
