I'm not. Howard never really has sold stuff on the side to bolster his income. It's just the day and age we are in and I think he's really proud of the event.

It just shows that he values his brand way more than Rush or those other jackasses. He likes to say this is because he's a good guy who doesn't want to take advantage of his fans but really it's just him being smart about his brand.

But when you balance it out against what the show lost -- crazy people calling in, ratings pressure forcing Howard to work, Tom Chiusano -- I'm not sure it's a net positive.

It doesn't make him a good guy, but it's one of his more justifiable quirks. The reverse end of the spectrum would be the Rooster Teeth guys, who put out 52 goddamn shirts a year, about a third of them just being something dopey the British guy said once. Obviously there's room for a lot of middle ground there, but I think its nice that Howard never really sought to bolster his income by flogging lovely shirts to the mouth-breathing loyalist idiots in his audience. Its not like flooding the world with more lovely t-shirts would make it a better place or anything.

I didn't listen when Jackie was on, but I know he shilled the hell out of his stuff. Like going to nice restaurants and sticking stickers for his dial-a-joke line in the stalls (coincidentally, the payphones where I grew up would let you dial *86 or something to listen to a joke... for free).

Any other examples? It gets brought up from time to time on the show but it sounds like they could fill the entire four hours with ragging on Jackie's shilling alone.

Much like with everything else in life, the Euros seem to have more sense on how to do things in a fun atmosphere without sucking the soul out of the event.
That's always who Jackie was, though. He was hustling before he got on the show, it just became more amplified because he had a bigger platform. Howard was never that kind of person before he got famous, fame simply presents you that kind of opportunity, which he obviously turned down anyway for the most part.

Howard saw his money in the end game, not selling keychains to people, but he sold and shilled a lot. He was basically selling porn for awhile back on those pay per view specials, he stopped selling poo poo early because he had the placement to not do so, and of course he looks down on anyone who has to promote side gigs or other ventures now.

But yeah, he never went full tilt like Rush did, selling people excellence in broadcasting sweaters and chairs and beer cozies

It is rare in radio. Look at Bubba back when he was on Sirius. Every other caller had to put over his merchandise, "Hey Bubba, I got those Full Trucker Effect Bubba Army mudflaps, anyway so what do you think about Brent getting knocked out in 9.3 seconds*" or a guy like Rush Limbaugh, who makes over 20 million a year and is still hawking El Rushbo Coffee Mugs and garbage like that.

I need to hear this story, and how Artie tells it.

It's been an amazing and sometimes weird experience getting to know almost everything about the show in the past couple months. The weirdest part is how I don't pay any attention to the order of clips I look up, yet consistently find sequential or almost sequential clips. I heard the "mac hine" bit, and then a few hours later, I'll randomly find another clip that references it like it was the day before. Same goes for "traction". And I'm not even going by "related videos" but through entirely different Stern clip searches.

It was extremely funny the first time he told the story on the air, but like every Artie joke he then went on to tell it approximately 7,000 times on various talk shows as if it was the first recounting of the tale, and it lost some of the charm.

This is how most comedians operate, they don't throw away good jokes and often have to do bits over and over for various audiences. Artie don't repeat too much and he is a hell of a story teller.

Yesterday's show with Jimmy Kimmel sitting in for the first half was really refreshing. Him and Ike Barinholtz sticking around after the interview made the studio feel more alive and bustling than it's been in a long while. Just hearing other fresh voices added to the mix was great.

I hope that convinces Howard to finally fill in the Artie chair but we're probably in coast mode until it's time for the dubious resigning.

It was a great dynamic, and once I saw that Kimmel was sitting in I knew it was going to be a must listen edition of the show, and I was not disappointed. Although, Howard repeating the same sentence over and over again during the Carolla interview about how he's a genius really made me think he's either A. not interested in Adam or B. just in full on coast mode.

On the topic of stand up..

Does anyone find it difficult to watch comedians standup after you hear them in their natural state? For example, I've never enjoyed Artie's stand up because I find him to be so funny off the cuff. I listen to Joe Rogan's podcast and although it's not funny, I know what his natural "tone" is in regards to his voice and his standup is just so unnatural. Same goes for any other comedian with a podcast.

Artie's standup is definitely not as funny as Artie being Artie. It's been a while since I've heard Rogan do standup but I thought it was funny. I'm really getting into his podcast lately.

Dana Gould is another guy I love on podcasts, including his own, but couldn't get through one of his specials on Netflix. He used to crush on Carolla's morning radio show.

Earthquake's stand up is great and every time he comes in the studio I almost pass out laughing. I wish he was a bigger name. He is guilty of repeating his stories like you guys were talking about earlier, but every comedian does that. Testing out material on a radio or talk show is a bad idea, you have to do great when you go out there.

I'm an enormous Carlin fan, and I completely agree. Georgie's interviews were interesting, and occasionally amusing, but he absolutely did NOT do material when he wasn't actually performing his act.

EDIT:
The closest he got was once I heard him talking about his second heart attack on a radio show... "There are only two kinds of heart attacks, Mild and Massive." Super dark, but funny in context.
