Edit: To further explain, it's so rural southern that I'd assumed it had died out outside of people telling stories about being little in the south.

The "old woman" usage is much older and probably unrelated to the "little chicken" usage. Whoops, I got that backwards; "chicken" is older (16th century) and comes from "birdie". "Old biddy" is 18th century, and likely comes from "Bridget".
