Where did this 'cultural Marxist' stuff come from and how did it get so popular that the BNP assume people will know what it means? Up til this point I'd never heard anyone say it outside of Twitter jokes, I don't even really know what it means and I probably am one :psyduck:

(also are we to assume they're in favour of economic Marxists? I mean they sure do seem to hate capitalism)

http://rationalwiki.org/wiki/Cultural_Marxism

which cites http://www.splcenter.org/get-informed/intelligence-report/browse-all-issues/2003/summer/reframing-the-enemy

quote:

Television commentator Pat Buchanan says it is being used to "de-Christianize" America. Washington heavyweight William Lind claims it is turning U.S. college campuses into "ivy-covered North Koreas." Retired naval commander Gerald Atkinson fears it has invaded the nation's military academies. Immigration activist John Vinson suggests it aims "to distort and destroy" our country.

"Cultural Marxism," described as a conspiratorial attempt to wreck American culture and morality, is the newest intellectual bugaboo on the radical right. Surprisingly, there are signs that this bizarre theory is catching on in the mainstream.

The phrase refers to a kind of "political correctness" on steroids — a covert assault on the American way of life that allegedly has been developed by the left over the course of the last 70 years. Those who are pushing the "cultural Marxism" scenario aren't merely poking fun at the PC excesses of the "People's Republic of Berkeley," or the couple of American cities whose leaders renamed manholes "person-holes" in a bid to root out sexist thought.

Right-wing ideologues, racists and other extremists have jazzed up political correctness and repackaged it — in its most virulent form, as an anti-Semitic theory that identifies Jews in general and several Jewish intellectuals in particular as nefarious, communistic destroyers. These supposed originators of "cultural Marxism" are seen as conspiratorial plotters intent on making Americans feel guilty and thus subverting their Christian culture. ...

Breivik blaming it seems to given it a new lease of life in Europe.

Remember all those Bulgarians and Romanians who were coming to take our jobs? The ONS have released figures for the numbers of such working in the UK - 140,000, an increase of less than 30000 in the last year and a fall of 4000 since visa controls were lifted.

Eight days out and UKIP have been made to look like loving idiots. And the sun is shining too.

Exactly. Exposing candidate after candidate as having the zaniest of views does nothing. Exposing them as the Thatcherite shits they are does nothing. This will do nothing.

The people who are voting UKIP aren't doing so out of any rational reason. It's a protest vote, a way of raging against the establishment (by voting for a party who are proposing all of the establishment's wildest dreams).

The Bank's been saying that interest rates will start to rise slowly some time in 2015 for several months now, and nothing they've said today seems to change that.

http://www.theguardian.com/business/2014/may/14/bank-of-england-interest-rates-inflation-report

quote:

The Bank of England appeared to quash speculation of an early rise in interest rates, leaving its growth and inflation forecasts unchanged.

Policymakers at Threadneedle Street used the Bank's latest quarterly inflation report to signal that it remained in no rush to raise rates, with the first rise expected around the time of the general election in the second quarter of 2015. Bank rate has been on hold at the all-time low of 0.5% since March 2009 and the governor Mark Carney said on Wednesday any rate rises would be "gradual and limited".

The report said it was not yet clear whether the recovery was on a sustainable footing. The forecasts showed members of the rate-setting monetary policy committee still believe there is 1-1.5% of spare capacity in the economy to be used up, following the UK's below-par performance at the onset of the crisis in 2008.

Ronya's post covers it's origin but in the UK it's gained traction because of our friends at the Daily Mail, primarily Melanie Phillips, which is awkward given it's origin as an anti-Semitic conspiracy that actively claims the jews are behind this nefarious plot, leading you to wonder is she a cynical hypocrite or just a completely loving stupid waste of space?

Especially when it's someone else's hundreds of millions supporting your penny.

They don't have to support it for long if they know it's peak finance, though, just long enough for them to divest their assets. The people who make the most money from financial crashes are always the last ones to get out.

It's pretty simple really, if you want to move to another european country it makes sense to choose one whose language you speak at least a little. That's all there is to it (well that and great universities plus general fetishism of 'britishness'). Certainly not NHS with all the recent cuts, workfare benefits, or whatever discretionary CPI-adjusted income you have left from your minimum wage.

edit: I mean, at least when compared to other countries. Obviously there are plenty of reasons to move, and to some extent these do include not having a job or already being poor in a country with worse living standards.

Radio 4 is IMO one of the best parts of the BBC, even though it only seems to be listened to by older middle class people. I don't listen to it 24/7 (usually have Today on in the background in the morning and sometimes catch the news before other stuff is on), but from what I gather it seems like it challenges bullshit a lot more than the TV news does. Again; that's based on half-listening to only a little bit of its output, I could be completely wrong!

It also annoyed the Daily Mail by naming Marx the worlds greatest philosopher (by a public vote of Radio 4 listeners) a few years ago: which is something that I can get behind!
