I feel I should mention that if you are playing DW8 and trying to get the all weapons achievement don't sell the special weapons. You can only have one of each of them so keeping it ensures that each new special weapon drop is a new weapon instead of getting the same ones over and over.

Accuracy is nice in Hard mode since it gives you a slightly better chance to get through all the blocking officers do. Havoc and Victory Cry have their uses, too

Just so nobody else has to go searching for it: to level up Fortune Hunter you have to kill 1500 dudes and then beat on officer.

Yeah, I've seen that. The game has a few labeling errors. I seriously doubt, for example, that a set of level-1 claws is supposed to be called "Godly Axe." Also see my aforementioned quote about Diaochain getting enraged when you take out Lu Bu (which you get after beating Diaochan).

Yeah, Kamen Rider: Battride War. The sequel's coming soon/may actually be out now for PS3 and Wii U.

There's some neat ideas in it and some interesting characters (I know nothing about Kamen Rider) but it's got some real problems. Frame rate issues, lack of variety, small stages, weird move-sets, the bike riding is bad, game looks really ugly outside of the character models, and the whole thing just seems really shoddily put together. I thought there were some neat systems in it, like Musou being replaced with a Rider transformation mode and having dedicated armor breaking moves that cost meter, but the whole thing comes across as a prototype game like Ken's Rage or Pirate Warriors. I had some fun, got a Platinum out of it, I got it used for $45 off eBay and thought that was an okay deal.

Okay so I'm a bit confused- are there any weapon specializations by character anymore? Like, I see that Sun Shangxiang can earn up to a 5 affinity with a bunch of weapons, but even with different stuff equipped she still uses her chakrams during musou attacks- is she somehow better with them than any other weapon, or can anyone become equally skilled with anything?

Each character has an EX attack (or two if you're playing XL) with his preferred weapon, which is a special "add-on" to a specific strong attack. EX attacks tend to be good, but if your chosen character uses a weapon you don't like, you don't significantly hurt your fighting ability by using something else. In Sun Shangxiang's case, she's best with wheels, almost as good with all other Dash-type weapons, and varying degrees of less good with everything else.

I've been playing DW8 for a bit and am liking it a lot. They really made each weapon type feel powerful and dynamic - everything just flows so smoothly. I have a few really basic questions, though, since things have changed in minute, but confusing ways over the years. I haven't played DW since 5, and I've just spent the past month or so playing Samurai Warriors 2, so these might be some "duh" questions, but I can't quite wrap my head around a few things.

  • How exactly does level progression work? Since the story mode forces you to pick between a limited selection of characters, it doesn't seem like there's an organic way to max someone out short of just grinding in free mode over and over. Xiahou Dun is my favourite character, but I've only been able to play as him in two missions so far - I'm sure there'll be more later, but it still seems like a weird decision, though understandable considering how many character there are.
  • Which begs the question: Is there even a reason to max out a character? Since their moveset is dependent on the weapon, you could just pick another character and use the moveset you like. I guess you'd lose the EX moves and the affinity stuff, but that doesn't seem like a huge deal for regular play, and you'd be forced to do this in story mode anyway?
  • The skill that increases item drop rate requires you to defeat officers with evenly matched weapons. What does this mean? I assume it's ones with the same alignment, but this seems impossible since 9 times out of 10 a "neutral" officer will switch alignment to positive/negative before I get a chance to kill him.
  • Is it not possible to close gates anymore? They just keep spawning mobile unit captains, creating a seemingly endless supply of enemies, which would make it impossible to clear out a map, which I think is a bummer, and it brings me to:
  • If you can't clear out a map, is there ever a reason to not just completely ignore the regular troops and go for the officers every time? This was probably always the optimal thing to do, but it removes the element of satisfaction you get from completely vacuuming a map. Not that I'd do this every time, but I did like having the option.
  • It looks like the complete edition has every character unlocked from the beginning, which makes weapons drops kind of pointless, since nothing ever drops for your character. Am I correct in thinking that the correct progression here is just to sell all the inferior poo poo between every level and then buy better weapons for your character? And since the distinction between Heaven/Earth/Man seems arbitrary, should I ever keep more than two alignments around at a time?

I did the Imperial Escort mission for Wei yesterday when a glitch happened. Everybody stopped moving except the opposing army and Lu Bu.

Luckily Xiahou Yuan is able to stunlock Lu Bu with his charge attack really easily. I was only able to finish the mission by manually pushing the emperor into the escape point to continue the script. Also Cao Cao got lodged inside the carriage while on his horse.

Hakkesshu posted:

Whatever level that you are at when you recruit a character, they'll be at the same level. Though they wont scale further so you have to level them up separately after recruiting them. There's also probably some max level they can start with too so you can't grind to max and then run through the story missions.

1. Playing a nation's main story mode gains levels for all officers in that nation, in KT fashion it's not explained at all. EDIT: Or it's what Golden Goat said. You can also eventually pay to level allies up in Ambition mode. Free Mode grinding is probably the slowest way to gain levels unless you're playing on Chaos or Ultimate. For Hard you want to be at least lvl 50.

2. If you want to try Ultimate difficulty you'll need a lvl 150 character, and you'll need to forge a good level 4 weapon. There are guides around for that.

3. If they don't have a symbol over their head they're neutral. Don't worry too much about levelling the skills, they just happen as you play. You'll be killing officers in two swipes soon enough (on Normal anyway). The only one that's a pain is Fortune Hunter.

4. I don't remember any gates to close. That was more of an Empires thing. Some maps have "reinforcement points" you can control, but that's in Ambition mode.

5. It's a good idea to at least take out Unit Officers/Captains as they can kill lower ranking allies if given enough time, or will stall the progress of certain objectives.

6. Just buy one or two good weapons for people you like as you go along. Wait until you get near the end of a nation's Story mode and then do a big sell off and buying spree for level 4 stuff. Keep the star weapons if you care about filling in the Weapon gallery. Eventually you'll be looking for good weapons to use in forging so don't blindly sell everything all the time. Keep anything with a good skill at a decent level.

In old DW/SW (not Empires), every spawn point would have a guard captain stationed next to it. If you killed him, you stopped enemies from spawning. This doesn't seem to happen in 8; it'll keep endlessly spawning groups with new unit officers, effectively creating a secondary time limit since you can never stop your camp from being assaulted. I assume they did this to increase the difficulty, but losing a mission because your commander died on the other side of the map has always been my least favourite thing about these games.

Edit: Oh, I forgot: How do you learn new skills? I'd like to open up Quick Learner sooner rather than later.

When selecting skills it shows you how to get them/level them up.
In the case of Quick learner it's
Defeat an enemy officer that is afflicted with a status ailment.

On the guard captain thing, there's nothing like that in this it seems though usually they stop spawning if you kill nearly officers and go past that area. Though i'm not too sure what affects it.

Look out for a weapon with high status effects - there's a 3-gold-star Podao that is perfect for this with Morass 9 and Venom 9, and others are likely to have similar loadouts - then just use that at every possible opportunity as you go through the other story levels.

Gates are almost exclusively a 'what's happening in the plot at the moment' thing, so they're managed by the flow of events rather than just by killing a Guard Captain.

The times I remember your main camp/commander really being constantly attacked are on specific battles where that's A Thing. Usually if you clear away the guys around the camp you don't have to worry too much. Plus with the horse you can get back quick if you need, even quicker if you use the musou attack while riding.

You unlock the skills by doing the same thing you need to do to level them up. So, for Quick Learner you have to "kill an officer afflicted with a status ailment." Some people have EX moves that will give their weapon a fire/poison/slow buff, or you can buy/find a weapon with one of those skills on it. Slow is the easiest one to use for this, I think it's called Morass in the game. BUT, just fulfilling the requirement doesn't mean you'll get the unlock/level up. KT made it a percentage chance to unlock, higher percentage on higher difficulty. How "fun." But again, you'll unlock and level poo poo up like crazy just by playing. Only Fortune Hunter and Equestrian are ones you have to go out of your way to level.

For you and anybody else just getting into/getting back into the game I'd again suggest skipping back 10-20 pages in the thread to when the PS4/Vita versions came out. We had a lot of the same issues/questions and there were some informative posts. Not that asking lots of questions is bad either, glad to the thread picking up in traffic. To be honest it depends on the stage. Generally if you complete missions correctly and defeat enough officers early in the battle, your allies will be able to mop up to an extent. However, in other battles you'll find even the likes of Lu Bu struggling if he's up against a couple of Mobile Unit Captains.
