First day back to BJJ after two months off and I get a nice little gift of getting my toe sprawled on and reactivating my nice lingering 5 month turf toe. Does anyone here have any success in using wrestling shoes for practice, or is that pointless since they're pretty flexible anyways? I'll of course be taping the toe, and looking into getting a metal plate for my shoes as well. Any experiences?

I've used wrestling shoes since starting bjj, so almost 3 years, and I've never had turf toe, my buddies have all complained about it while I just smile away. Get a good form fitting size, not too right but not too big, I first got them too big and they felt like clown shoes.

If you do get shoes, obviously be aware that they're a giant target for foot locks and I've had to get my defense for them since white belt way up there.

Pay attention at the rules meeting (or read them or whatever) if you're planning on doing this, most of the tournaments that I've been in have rules that discourage this (e.g. no points on subsequent takedowns if the ref decides you're doing this)

That's stupid. If you're capable of putting me on my rear end every time I come at you and then not letting me finish you from my rear end, you're beating me.

It's insane how Cornelius went from being a purple belt like last week to beating Braulio loving Estima.

His progress has been incredible, but this is not the first indicator we've seen. Double bronze at ADCC about 2 months after he got his black belt was some serious poo poo. Won his weight class at Pan-Ams. Can't wait to see how he does at Worlds.

I wouldn't rely on the belt progression as any kind of indicator given it was very clear sandbagging. He's quite a talent, though.

Apparently he was a pretty crappy grappler until about mid-purple. He never won a single round of anything and then suddenly it all just clicked for him and he started rolling through competitions like a katamari. I would love to know how that happened.

Although the chick was apparently down with the 20 guy train being run on her, as Lloyd explained to his class.

Edit: My point being there's no reason to change it since it doesn't have to make sense.

I once, sarcastically, identified as a Lloyd Irvin purple belt.

Somehow most of Philly still thinks Jason Sargus is more of a jerk, though. YMMV.

Anyway, Nick is a real nice guy who doesn't know his own strength, which is considerable. He got his start training at Cranford Judo, which has a number of ex-Olympians. He's very difficult to do anything with in the clinch, and he's a monster from the top. His bottom game is mostly just turning over and escaping. He's not the most technical guy in the world, but he competes constantly up and down the east coast and he's tapped numerous black belts with neck cranks and keylocks.
