I wouldn't define giving somebody a bong instead of a computer "malicious" in any sense of the word.

EAT THE EGGS RICOLA posted:I am permitted to work a maximum of 200 days unless my contract is renegotiated. Don't forget that 104 days a year are weekend days, and there are 10 or 11 stat holidays a year in Canada, bringing your total to ~115 days off per year for any employment. Leaving 50 days unaccounted for. You should also find out if you're expected to be working longer work days as more and more places are moving to longer days to make shorter weeks.

It's incredibly common in the US, and the larger the company the more likely it is. Some will even require that outside consultants attached to their projects have a clean test on record, which I would imagine is why my old small-shop consulting firm required it.

I still have yet to have a drug test....

We get random drug tests every year. We get drug tested before employment too and I just work for a company with under 500 people.

In the US and I've always had a pre-employment drug test with the threat of random drug tests after that (but have never seen one of those happen).

I had to take a drug test before I went to work for my last place. It may be semi related to the fact it was a factory in the US with a handful of machines that could mangle you.

The drug testing is mostly an insurance-mandated thing, plus a drug test is usually required right after an accident so that any workman's compensation claims can be completely denied in the event that an accident does occur and it can be determined that the employee was under the influence. A friend of mine's nephew was working on a tar crew on base and basically fell into hot tar and was completely hosed up. He was looking at a year minimum to recover, but because it was an accident Workman's Comp was going to cover the entire cost of his medical care. And then they found traces of marijuana in his system. That was more than enough for Workman's Comp to tell him to piss off and deny any coverage, even while he was still on a ventilator and no one was even sure he was going to live. He naturally lost his job as well, and that cost him his employer's insurance as well. If he's lucky he might be able to go back to work in another five to ten years, but as it stands right now his family can't afford the physical therapy sessions, and they are drowning in debt just from the initial accident, let alone the week of medical care in the ICU. Pretty sure the hospital just got him stabilized and in no threat of dying before they kicked him out. Have to talk to my friend to see what's happened since then.

His contract basically says he's required to take at least 10 of those 12 weeks. It's all accounted for. Edit: It is PTO and not unpaid vacation, right?

Last year, I worked ~ 2400 hours. In the next year, I will work 1500 hours. For this work, I will make about 2.3 times what I made last year. I have to work a set number of days, and my time is being accounted for on an hourly basis. I cannot work more than that set number of hours according to my contract. The place I am working for can renegotiate the number of hours if we both agree.

I would actually gladly take a job with 12 weeks of annual vacation even if it was unpaid. I'd do seasonal work at resorts in the Bahamas or something or just save money then travel. Jesus, is this a real thing? Tell me how to do this

When I worked in Wisconsin I had to take drug tests for any job I had that was a manager level or higher. Now that I'm in San Francisco, I've not ever heard "drug test" mentioned once.

I work at a mining/oil and gas company in Australia and had to take a drug test to get the job and apparently can be randomly tested at any time. That said, I haven't heard of anyone in corporate being tested, it's more of an on-site thing, but you never know.

Yeah, in my experience "random drug testing" means "if we want to fire your rear end we'll make you pee in a cup and hope we can fire you based on the results". There's the accident thing Daylen mentioned, too. I've also noticed it's exactly the opposite of this:aaronp posted:When I worked in Wisconsin I had to take drug tests for any job I had that was a manager level or higher. The higher I've gone on the ladder the fewer tests there have been. This may be a west coast thing, though.

Some of the mines in Western Australia will alcohol and drug test randomly at the gate as people arrive for a shift. The masking agent trade is as big as the drug trade in these towns.

I do local government work and I had to be tested as a condition of employment. I'm not sure if they can randomly re-test, I'm guessing the unions would pitch a fit. I don't use any, so it doesn't make much difference to me, but it always seemed a bit silly to me.

Had a client yesterday blow up their MSSQL install, or at least that was my idea when I connected to the server. MSSQL would refuse to start and the log folder showed no new logs since a reboot in the morning. Turns out their onsite tech swore the data drive letter should be D:\ so they changed it without letting anyone know. Switched it back to E:\ and everything came up just fine.
