That bi-weekly thing sucks though.

I'll probably be the first to say the Bi-weekly thing might be for the best? More time to work on each episode means better animation, I would think.

Yea, I've been warming up to this idea. I kind of love the rushed, cheap, and yet lovable stuff Toei's been putting out this season but if it takes them two weeks to make something better while also maybe letting their animators go home to sleep at night that's probably a good thing.

Plus Stand Alone Complex was released like that and if the stars are aligning for another Stand Alone Complex then they could make it a month an ep for all I care.

This is the first time I've seen it as anything other than speculation but it looks like we're getting 26 eps for now. I'm...slightly disappointed by this. I would have figured that with a bi-weekly schedule, they may have just gone through the whole thing but getting just over half of the original number of episodes from the first season seems kind of strange.

At this point I'm just hoping for a Jojo's situation where Dark Kingdom and Small Stranger are covered.

I'm just so bloody sick of seeing Dark Kingdom be the only game in town.

It's like if all we got out of DBZ was the Sayian saga. Done with that time loop, thanks.

I watched up to the S series about a month ago. Got pretty weird in R, what with the DOOM tree and Tuxedo Mask being a dick (for weird reasons), but overall I quite like the show. Pretty hyped for the new one.

Episode 31's my favorite, just because Zoisite gets mouse armor. I suppose it's ep. 27 in English? Meh. It also had Rhett Butler, who I always appreciated, though his performance here was hairier than usual.

This is wishful thinking but looking at their catalogue, most Viz licensed shows release in the UK at some point. If they bother to release it in the UK, it'll be the first legal way to see the series over here. Hell, even if it doesn't it'll still be an affordable way to get the show.

In the fullsize comparison images here the BD looks better than either the NA/JP DVD releases in almost every way but I feel like they maybe did a bit too much noise reduction. Still looks great though. How much do Viz's BD sets sell for? I've never bought from them.

Sailor Moon is big enough that it won't get canned halfway like previous magical girl releases from Viz, so I'm cautiously optimistic. The new dub will be a nice bonus, but I mainly care about getting the original version with good audio-visual quality.

About $60 retail for 13 episodes, so pretty average.

The two closest style releases to this (K and Ranma 1/2 sets) were $69.99 and $54.99 MSRP (look at ~$40 after online discounts/sales).

Their picture of the "2009 DVD Remaster" is complete and utter bullshit and I hope they get called out on it.

First of all, there's no Japanese 2009 DVD Remaster! The 2009 JP DVD releases were a boxed re-release of the 2002-2003 Japanese DVDs (which were a remaster). Second.. they look like this, not like whatever the hell that image they posted is :

In fact what they posted looks closer to the really lovely fansub encode but I somehow don't have a copy of it to check.

I'm fine if the quality of the blurays are that of the Japanese re-release. Considering that some of that stuff was originally stored on VHS. I'm just happy that we'll get good quality US releases of all the seasons and Stars. The movies and oavs would be nice but one step at a time. Toei actively working with them can really only mean good as Viz can't cut corners or do anything if it doesn't meet Toei's approval.

Sailor Moon is big, but Viz is releasing literally everything they can except what most of the people who are nostalgic for Sailor Moon grew up with. Don't get me wrong, the original dub is terrible, but unless they're going to DB Kai it and try to get as many of the original VAs back for the new dub as they can (I would be very surprised if they did this) I have a feeling there's gonna be some major backlash. Hell, they're not even doing something like the DBZ Rock the Dragon box set Funi put out, they're just pretty much pretending the original dub doesn't exist in spite of it being what 99% of the fans remember.

The fact that they're going all-in on it just seems like they're pretty much asking to take a major bath on this.

If they're going to take a bath (hypothetically, the book numbers for Kodansha US' manga run write a story where Viz are probably going to make their investment back) is including the DiC(and/or Cloverway) dub(s) in a "Fighting Evil by Moonlight" edition (You could get away with doing S and SS's dubs in thier boxsets but S1 and R won't work shy of Ronin Warriors'ing it) really going to help them?

Viz's PR is doing damage control (not uncommon after AX leaked about the season for Little Busters and how the Kadokawa CEO leaked that their new KyoAni show was on TBS). The picture used for the BD is very similar to what Toei has done when upscaling Galaxy Express 999 and Slam Dunk (BGs have loss of detail and are smudged due to QTEC upscaling it). They've commented about how it's a new remaster, so it's a definite leak.

ConanThe3rd posted:

So really, unless the blow up is really really good there's not much point in going BR?
Due to Toei likely using QTEC as they have been for everything, the sets look worse than simply scanning the prints. If you're not overly concerned about BG details, it'll look fantastic due to the added color depth (DVD really fails in that category, so anything looks more rich due to that).

Viz pretty much can't release the old dub at this point. They weren't the ones who did it (meaning they'd have to pay the rightsholder for the original dub/video/audio masters) and that would be DVD-only while the only BD release they could offer would be uncut subbed-only since that wasn't remastered on the Japanese side. Even Geneon/ADV had to go sub-only uncut DVD when they had the masters from Toei. Given the numbers that Kodansha have gotten from the manga, I highly doubt Viz will lose money on this. Sure there'll be people upset over it not being what they saw on Toonami, but most people will likely still enjoy it new. The only big negative is that they won't have the dubbed episodes going up on Hulu Monday as that'd answer any concerns while attracting a bigger fanbase who won't like subs.

Hell, Funimation has upscaled DBZ themselves in addition to cropping it and that's still pulling in money despite it being different than what ran on Toonami. Those sets still sell, and Sailor Moon was bigger than DBZ. Viz isn't going to lose money on Sailor Moon.

Some folks are nostalgic for the version they grew up with. Sorta like how the Voltron sets outsold the Golion sets or, while I'm not 100% sure on this one, the Robotech sets probably outsold the Macross sets.
