The Cubs have always been my NL team to follow because of WGN. Looks like I'm buying MLB.tv or something next year. And as a fan of localized media, WGN becoming another syndicated network is sad. A sad day. I actually just saw the article while watching the Cubs on WGN. Cubs at Brewers today, 3-0 Milwaukee so far.

Can I be real here? I'm watching the NBA Finals (mainly so I can have something to talk about with a friendly co-worker tomorrow), and am I incorrect for feeling that Breen/Van Gundy/Jackson are, well, terrible? I feel sometimes it wanders into Sports Talk Radio-level type of in-game discussion, and it gets rather aggravating. Am I incorrect on not really finding them very good?

I only find Gundy bad when he gets ranty. Breen is annoying with his wishy-washyness. Jackson is just terrible and I hope he gets hired by someone else soon so I never have to hear him again.

Jackson drags the entire booth down. That may not be a long way if you don't like Breen & Van Gundy but whatever you think about them they are noticeably worse when Jackson is there too.

I just find ESPN's coverage of the NBA really bad. Especially with "Inside the NBA" and "NBA on TNT" being quite better at covering the sport. I'm a tad confused as to why I should consider Tim Legler an expert on the NBA for example. It also doesn't feel right to have that type of crew call a game like that. The NBA Finals was seemingly always called by people like Brent Musburger, Dick Stockton, or Marv Alberts. All three of those guys did a fantastic job, and they were generally paired with some great analysts. I do believe ESPN has the type of talent on their own roster right now to have their own version of what I just mentioned, but they really don't seem to utilize it well at all. Mike Tirico (sexual harassment aside) is a fantastic play by play guy. I actually like the MNF pairing he has with Gruden as it gives off a "Musburger/Vermeil" type vibe. (I actually would like to see them both doing college games more often, but that's for another time). I like the suggestion of Doris Burke. If not for Hubie Brown being up there in age I'd have paired him with Tirico, but Burke works quite well. I kind of wonder if SVG would be better off in pregame? I think Jackson should be coaching in the NBA FuzzySkinner fucked around with this message at 17:34 on Jun 11, 2014 |

Legler played in the NBA off and on for a long time as a three point specialist. He won the three point shootout and was runner up for 6th man of the year one year. I guess I don't know what you think qualifies someone to talk about basketball on TV, but he's not just some random dude. Stan Van Gundy is coach/GM for the Pistons now. Mark Jackson should be neither commenting on the NBA nor coaching it.

Mike Breen is a way better PBP guy at basketball than Mike Tirico.

Most of what people hate on Breen for is the result of him being saddled with poo poo partners and having to play off of their crap because he's professional about his job.

Yeah I think Breen is pretty good. I can't think of a better basketball pbp guy at ESPN. Maybe Shulman I guess, but he's their lead college and MLB guy. Van Gundy can be okay sometimes and awful others. I wish they could talk Doug Collins into doing color again, at least for the playoffs. Or Walton because he's at least fun, but I think he's happy just doing random college games.
