It seems to me that facebook is overcrowded with ads for its format, and so it's hard for them to show everyone everything. We're having better luck with Pinterest from a hits perspective but they don't stick around for the other parts of our site. I think there's got to be best ways to use every social media outlet from a marketing perspective, one just has to find it.

Having the same problem here. Reach is basically nil now. Trying to get around it a bit by just posting images from articles rather than a share link.

On the subject of pinterest, I'd love to hear how everyone promotes through them. I'm basically relying on a heavy influencer just happening to pin something from me 2-3 times a month to get any meaningful traffic from them.

Do you guys link to your pinterest page from your main site? Right now I'm only linking to my Facebook, twitter, and Google+. I have a Pinterest page as well as tumblr but I don't link to those.

This is great and it pisses me off at the same time.

We have about 1100 likes, and we paid for them mostly, to get things started with our promotions. I need to go back and see if they are legit or not. We have very low engagement, and I previously thought it was because of how we posted stuff, or the fact that folks are overwhelmed in general with facebook so only the 'best' (most colorful, easiest to understand, least text, etc.) stuff gets through. That may still be the case.

Either way I need to get some new promotion out. Whats the new hotness?

If you paid for likes then they are not legit. The very act of you paying for them makes them not legit. Think about it for a second.

Edit: Paying for likes is good for unlocking all that extra crap Facebook puts behind how many likes you have but you aren't going to make money from a bunch of bot accounts.

I "promoted my page". I didn't buy them on fiverr or something. I was under the impression that paying facebook to put your page in front of people that you've targeted with specific keywords was legit. That's what I meant by that.

That's different. When someone says they paid for likes they usually mean they paid some guy to give them a bunch of likes.

Roger.

So how many of you guys have had success marketing blogs with adwords to get readers? Is that smart? We have some products I want to get some traffic to... Online coaching, nutritional testing, food sensitivites/alergies, etc.. I did some keyword research and it seems not many folks are looking for that. But I'm still going to put out ads just to cover the bases. We want to get this info to folks to as to help them.

It's legit in that it is not against the TOS. You basically paid to have a thousand fake accounts Like your page. 7 minute mark on the video.

Clickfarms Like pages even when they're not being paid to Like them in order to get around Facebook's anti-clickfarm algorithms.

Yeah I watched the video and thats why I said I was pissed.. its good information to have, I'm angry that Facebook deceived me. Note however that I did see interaction/engagement improve, but not by the same or similar margins according to how many likes I have. Note I'm working with a n=1200 likes population here.

I'm going to see what I can do to promote elsewhere... what else have you guys done in order to get some good promotion?

Looks like there's a lot of other good options to drive traffic, adwords (potentially), things like commenting on other pages in your blog 'category', as well as blog directories and squidoo, etc.. nothing looks to be as 'powerful' as Facebook SAYS it is, however, if that makes any sense. Facebook talks a good game. We get a lot of hits from pinterest too, perhaps we'll invest more time into that.

I might be in the wrong thread here. I just started learning Wordpress today. I bought hosting, a domain, and a premium theme. I am slowly figuring things out, but I was wondering if someone could help me out with setting up picture links and columns in the style of my theme. I'm not sure what to select or edit in order for my website to start displaying like the Theme's demo version.

The demo of my theme is here for reference: http://demo.dankov-theme.com/?theme=ProStore

In essence, what I'm trying to do is get my blog to display picture links like the ones in the style of the theme. I'd like the first two Picture Links to be my 2 most recent blog posts, and the row of 4 picture links that go under the two to become Sticky Links where I keep my "about me", "Ebook", "How to", "Why to" pages.

Any help, or maybe even a link to a good guide, as I'm sure I'll need more help soon, would be appreciated.

Usually with the a theme like that, there is an admin section where you can replace that original pictures with the ones of your choice. It might also fall under the appearance->widgets section depending on how the theme is set up. You may have to edit the content inside of the index page widget to display your picture.

Unless I'm unsure on what you're asking?

I'd imagine sites like NSFW beeg.com NSFW make money still but they provide a fairly unique service. If you can offer a good amount of video clips and have some sort of niche I'm sure you can still make good commissions from account leads.

The vast vast majority of porn sites out there are owned by a handful of companies, many of them being the content producers themselves. It's one of the hardest niches to penetrate (heh)

I'm in the same boat, but I think it just takes time unless you're actively promoting and back linking every day. 2.5 months in and getting a consistent average of ~10 visitors a day on my main site. An interesting thing about my blog is that two-thirds of the traffic is international due to my blog being about tropical fruit. Once I return to the states I will start blogging about local American fruit.

Started a second blog yesterday. Made a bid on it at an expiring domains auction on godaddy. $155 was definitely more than it was worth, so I learned a tough lesson about only making bids if you really want the item. Will keep on slapping some content up there. The keyword I'm aiming for has about 1,100 visits/month and not much competition so hopefully I can get it to rank decently.

Also made a website, https://www.campglowgrenada.com for a peace corps project some other volunteers are working on.

So overall I've sunk a decent amount of money into this. Would have been pretty cheap if I hadn't made stupid impulse buys on things like facebook and stumbleupon advertising. Luckily I can spare the money and it has been a great learning experience. A really great way to pass the time, and any money I make in the future will be a bonus.

After the latest panda update I'm close to traffic levels I was at two years ago when I got dinged. Sort of interesting that two years of work to try to get back up in rankings was pointless and uncontrollable due to Google updates. Though it has pushed me higher for the event-specific news stuff I do, so that will have long term benefits.

Not sure what your fruit blog is, but for the tropical stuff you might want to do articles on growing tropical fruit in the US. I say this because I'm growing some pink banana trees and there are tricks to get the seeds to sprout that aren't on the instructions, but people in communities that grow bananas and other fruit trees know them. Heck bananas and oranges both have diseases threatening to wipe out entire crops, and the orange debate has moved into GMO territory in an effort to find resistant types.

Great idea! Will look into that.

The best way to get your seedlings to germinate is to wrap them in a wet paper towel and put them inside a ziploc. Put the ziploc near a window. Then replant. You can also try seedling kits which are pretty cheap from home depot or wherever. Check out tropicalfruitforum.com for more in depth discussion on how to get your poo poo to grow. Also might be able to get people to send you actual saplings.

It's pretty easy to serve your own ads. We use Doubleclick, which works pretty much the same as plugging in AdSense code.

Don't trust that Adsense knows what's best for your site. They'll often make suggestions on ad placements that aren't good for revenue at all. I have categories like dating blocked on my site because my target market would be really turned off by the porny-looking Thai dating ads (at least I know I was).

Absolutely. Adsense is basically the only general ad service that matters, but you can make much more with well-targeted CPA campaigns (and will have much more freedom in how you place your ads). Just find some relevant companies to your niche on Commission Junction.

As far as I know the practice of creating lenses depends greatly on the actual content that you provide. If you provide a great deal of quality content then it can actually drive people to yourself. Squidoo doesn't, however, really offer any benefit in regards to getting links on the site and SEO since as someone else pointed out they are no-follow.

I'd look into a content locker instead of a mail list because people may be able to just take the content from one e-mail and spread it to the rest where as a content locker requires you to perform an action prior to receiving the content. That said, I've never done a free e-book with e-mail so maybe it's easier that way and not really "hackable."
