My vet prescribed my ferret metacam and gave him a dose suitable for a 3kg cat (my ferret weighs a kilogram) and now my ferret is dying.

Edit 2: vet admitted responsibility, moved heaven an earth today to save his life including dialysis to flush out the metacam antibiotics and will be keeping him under close observation for the rest of the week, free of charge. It's still worrying but they think he's very unlikely to die.

Poor dude. I know ferrets get the same dose of flea meds as cats do due to their metabolic rate (or something like that), but that's a topical med. Glad the vet is making it right.

he's getting worse, I think, but the vet has assured me he's actually getting better. syringing him water and have another appointment in the morning, but he looks so bad. apparently to be expected and normal, but I can't help but think the worst

edit: they wouldn't keep him overnight but are taking him back in tomorrow

Apologies if someone posted about this elsewhere, but regarding the cat that saved the boy from the dog attack video that is going around. Is it just me or does it look like the dog is in more of a play than attack mode? I read he's going to be euthanized.

The dog is pretty seriously trying to hurt the kid. The dog is excited/aroused, sure. But it's definitely not play.

He'll be euth'd, and it's probably a good thing.

Did you see the bites at the end of the video, and the way he was shaking the kid like a ragdoll?

I only saw it in my phone, so that might be part of the problem. The only thing that really stood out was a wagging tail. I haven't heard anything about injuries, thought maybe the dog was trying to steal a shoe.

The kid had some pretty serious bite marks. Only time I haven't been mad at people for having an outdoor cat.

A lot of people think that a wagging tail automatically means that a dog is happy and/or safe. Which, unfortunately, results in a lot of people getting bit.

He shook the kid like he was trying to snap a neck and pull the prey back to his den, so no. A wagging tail does not mean happy, it can mean any kind of excitement, good or bad.
The kid needed stitches cuz the dog ripped through to the fat showing on his shin/calf.

Is this the right thread to ask for a recommendation? I moved to Colorado last summer for a girl and that recently fell through. So now I'm on my own, working 40 hours a week and enjoying hiking. I'd like to get a pet. I've had a cat before and my family has had dogs my entire life, but there's usually been other dogs with them or someone home all day. Is there a good breed I want to look for for my situation? Willing to hike, but able to deal with me working? Roommate also has a friendly corgi, but it goes with him to work.

Honestly, with you being alone and working a full time job, I would avoid getting a puppy and really think hard before getting any high energy dog breeds. A younger adult mutty mutt (1-3 years range) from the shelter could work perfectly for you. Since you aren't set on a specific breed and instead want certain characteristics, best bet is to write down what you are looking for in a dog (willing to hike, able to stay home for a work day, what grooming and exercise levels you want, what size dog you want, housebroken already? etc). Then go out to the shelter and talk to the employees/volunteers and show them your list. They should be able to match you with a dog that fits all your requirements, if one is available. If they don't have anything that meshes well with you, move to another shelter or just be patient.

Fostering a doggy who got spayed yesterday, she threw up green and yellow crap overnight, looked like grass and bile maybe she surely wasn't alloewed food before surgery and she was in a cement shelter, so not sure why grass. She's been drinking water and peeing but doesn't really want to eat. Have to give her pain meds and first dose of antibiotics this morning hoping that on an empty stomach isn't making it worse. She's a timid dopy sweetheart I don't wanna force feed her, what else can i feed her? She takes her pills in pill pockets but seems to have trouble chewing, her teeth seem fine but she has an underbite.

perkier this morning, less so this afternoon. The vet thinks it could be any number of things. Another day and he'll either be home or we have to have that "quality of life" chat that vets say so politely.

He's at a specialist exotic vet now. Much better. They're unhappy with our original vet.

But my best friend is still probably going to die.

Anyone have knowledge on geese? Particularly white chinese geese?

I know one that loves to be pet and sit in your lap, but he's constantly pinching me. I'm wondering if it's a mating instinct, or if he's testing me, or if it's just a sign of affection.

What is their favorite food to eat that would be cheap and easy to provide them?

Any way to tell how old one is?

So my wife noticed today that our cat has a... honestly I'm not sure what to call it. There's just some fur missing on her face:

It's pretty noticable, so she didn't have it when I left for work today. We've got a vet appointment tomorrow morning. I can't really tell if she's in pain or not, but she's not really scratching it or anything, I'm just not sure if there's anything we should be doing tonight so she doesn't get infected or anything.

My dog is pacing, has sweaty paws had a little accident indoors and has touch of diarrhea. I adopted him last week, i'm assuming its stress. I've taken him to the vet, brought in a stool sample and will get the results Monday. Anything i can do for now to chill this dog out? He wants to cuddle so i'm doing that. I'm at work now though, should i build him a fort/den out of cardboard boxes so he can hide out?

edit: I'm not entirely sure but i think he's hyperventilating now.

My douchebag semi feral cat brought home a lil wild mousey just now. It seems fine, active and alert, except uh... he's pretty obviously broken its spine somehow. Its back legs do not work. Doesn't seem to be in any pain, it just can't move those legs.

I made up a box with some food and water and old rags, and it's just wandering around in there with its back legs dragging uselessly. I made some holes in the lid and put it up where cat can't reach, and now I'm going to bed. Not sure what else to do. I am not going to kill it.

It's going to die anyway, so you can let it suffer or kill it. Maybe you could take it to a vet and they'll euth it for you.

Because it has a broken back and no medical attention? It's in pain. Animals are good at hiding it. Take it to a vet and have it euthanized, dude.

Slowly and painfully of not being able to eat and drink or probably eliminate properly if you keep it in a box or if you let it go it will quickly die by some predator cuz it can't move or defend itself, if you take it to be treated for a spinal injury at a vet they'll probably look at you like you're crazy and charge you $1000 for lots of tests at a specialist/exotics clinic.

Ps the doggy i posted was probably just developing kennel cough but is already on amoxicillin, she ate a bunch of grilled chicken when she wouldn't eat dog food. She's ok and now at home in utah.

lol goddamn you guys

anyway I opened the box earlier and mouse is hopping around on normally-functioning legs, so I guess its back was not broken. either the cat injured a nerve that is now better, or it was so stressed that part of its brain stopped working but it's ok now.

he'll probably go next door soon, so I'll go release it in the yard when he's gone.

I'm probably going to take my cat on an 11 hour drive to move to where I'm living in the summer. For my own sanity (and hers) I'd like to get some happy kitty pills so she can just sleep through the drive instead of freaking out like she normally does on any drive. When she was spayed, she had a really bad reaction to the ketamine. Will any other sedatives potentially cause problems that I should be concerned about?

I wouldn't expect a bad ketamine experience to mean she'd react badly to the sedatives normally prescribed for car trips (acepromazine or valium).

I'm worried about my six year old beagle.

He eats twice a day and usually poops 1-2 times a day. Friday evening he ate and then strained out some half/half poop-runny poop.

Saturday morning he ate then tossed it all up (might have eaten too fast) and then didn't eat at dinnertime. Then in the late evening he had some really, really watery diarrhea.

Sunday he ate both his meals (dog food in morning then chicken/rice in the evening) but still no poop.

He ate this morning but my gf who tele-works said he hasn't pooped all day.

He acts like his usual self except for going to the bathroom.

How long do I wait for him to poop before I take him to the vet?

I have a husky, and as a consequence there are white hairs EVERYWHERE. I have had to give up wearing black t-shirts because de-hairing them after they've been washed has become far too laborious, I end up using 3-4 sheets off a sticky lint roller per t-shirt. Now even my lighter t-shirts are succumbing to this same fate, with hairs showing up on them - what can I do about this? Is my only option to spend hours cash using sticky rollers every single wash? What does everyone else do?

Accept that you have a husky and move on with your life. It's the only way short of keeping dark clothing in garment bags and only dressing outside your home.
