Just tried out the Peglaci, and they're awesome. In particular the whole start with a gun thing is frickin' amazing. I kinda browsed the mods a bit, but didn't find what I was looking for. Is there a mod that gives that kind of effect to every race, so instead of starting out with a lovely sword, you start out with a lovely gun? Also, that forums drama is crazy stupid, but look on the bright side. At least you don't have the Bioware Social Network thing.

Because then this thread would die because all anyone ever does anymore is bitch about the official forum users. edit: What is the verdict on visual mods? Things like Spacebound and all that. Do they actually make the game look better or should I not bother with them?

Nothing about this community being a sack of shits with nothing better to do surprises me. What surprises me is how it seems to shock everyone else - Can't we just send our goodwill gestures and be done with it? We can't police the mouthbreathers, and chatting about it brings only one result: ulcers.

I'm in for contributing to cookies or whatever. Starbound is great so far, I can't wait to see where the team goes with it in the future... And once I know more lore/worldbuilding/progression for the game, I want to write some quest chains for a mod....I can't wait (totally can, but hyperbole is so fun).

I'll chip in if someone can convince the team that I'm trying to bribe them. For stuff.

Starbound is awesome. I just made it into the Beta sector for the first time this weekend. I've never even felt compelled to try before, as I enjoyed underground exploration so much. My thanks to everyone who is working on the game. Also...goodness posted:It's like some sort of alternate dimensions where triangles have more than 180 degrees. I've probably only "played" like 8 hours of this game. I've spent more time drawing Roman Bug Space Douchebags than playing basically any other game this season. Ducking out of cookies though. They can use my 45 bucks I spent on their game to buy cookies.

Rotten Cookies posted:They should be using those bucks to hire more developers because I don't have a real full finished enjoyable game in my hands yet! I only spent 120 hours on this game and it's still not done I want my money back I'm often curious why people seem to think this way with regards to sandbox/indie type games. It just flat wouldn't fly with bigger name companies. Christ, wouldn't it be nice to her my 60 bucks back for Simcity, Spore, or any Molyneaux title? Sorry, tough titties, maybe hold out for reviews next time. But indie games? Hell we just had the person with 500 hours try to get a refund. I can't really accept that it's just the genre because there has to be overlap from other games/genres. Hell, after a year of free updates the Terraria dev said he was done with the game due to a newborn son and having already given a year of FREE updates. The community lost its' collective poo poo and demanded refunds and all kinds of crazy poo poo. What makes indie titles different? Did minecraft just set a precedent for the genre?

I think Minecraft did set a sort of precedent. Even if it's just broken poo poo added, Notch would churn out updates, and free infinite updates were promised. So when a game is bought, people expect free infinite entertainment. Then there're the indie games that seemingly cash out never to return, so I think people are scared of that. Even though they don't HAVE to buy a game just because they're able to, that doesn't seem to stop some. At the slightest sign of a slowdown of updates (even temporary) people are quick to cry out about how the devs are thieves and just wanted money. I think between those two things, as well as the kind of people these sorts of games attract, coupled with the "unhappiest voices are the loudest" sort of thing, it's become a real toxic culture in games forums. It's really unfortunate because it pervades through many games, even the well-developed ones that are strong candidates to be very great games.

Developpers should know by now that the gaming community, or at least parts of it, are incredibly toxic. In that regard, they shouldn't ever say "oh yeah we'll udpate the game a bunch!" even if they do follow up on it, it'll never be enough in the eyes of the entitled consumer.
|
# ? May 19, 2014 21:07 |

Or, perhaps, provide a schedule. "We'll do free updates for one year after release" or similar. (Or two years, or whatever feels appropriate.)

It might have been the Cube World thread, but I think I brought up before that a bunch of game developers had to create a support group to deal with the stress and trauma from the amount of violent threats they were receiving from people. There was an article about it somewhere.
