Pissing me off: Two work weekends this month, one in the north sea, one in Scotland, where I think I'm going to be just carrying carboard boxes. Since these boxes contain desktop computers, it's an IT job.

Not pissing me off: The paycheck I'm gonna get in June from this.

Speaking of expenses, here's one I discovered this weekend. Emails have been fired to the relevant parties, and phone calls will follow by noon today. This is in a small way my fault (in the sense that I did not discover it until this weekend) but in a more accurate way, entirely my company's fault. It turns out I have not been paid expenses for trips I made on the company's behalf in February and March. I'm scheduled for another trip in a week and a half. I'm not running a loving charity here. Nothing like heading into a Monday morning knowing that, no matter how right I am, I'm basically going to be getting into an argument over my refusal to book travel until I am paid for previous expenses. Fantastic.

That beard thing that's stopping me from going on site visits that I was happy with? Turns out i'm not now.

There was only one visit that I had left before I wasn't booked for any for the foreseeable future and i've been taken off it. It was booked in a really nice hotel by the beach and it had loads of the young techies on it, meaning we could actually go out and have a couple drinks after the job was done rather than just going to the hotel (previously it was either that or drink alone and I only do that when gaming now).

There goes today's motivation.

Why should you lose motivation based on a choice you made?

Totally - When I first started at my current job, on the first day my manager and the HR woman were both on annual leave. So it was me listening to an HR administrator go over all the terrible systems we never use for 3 hours - Me nodding my head saying 'Yeah, ok, cool! awesome' and so on - And then sitting at my desk for the next 5 hours worrying if there was anything I should be doing :(

Was hoping i'd get to go on the last visit (they didn't mention i'd be taken off it, just that I wouldn't be booked for any more) as it was a really big job and we don't usually get jobs that big, maybe one every year. I'm planning on being gone before the next one so I made the choice and figured i'd get through this one and it was all future ones they wouldn't put me on. Just a little bummed out, it was a nice place we were staying at compared to the usual. Never been in something that wasn't a premier or a travel lodge before. Place even had a pool. I've never stayed at a hotel with a pool!

I'm cool with it, apparently working with no motivation suits me, i've closed more tickets than I usually do :psyduck:

E: I should probably mention that what they said to the admin team word for word was "don't book them for any more" so I assumed i'd get to go on the one I was already booked for. Guess not

Does your company have an intranet? Go exploring. Have any mandatory training you can do online? Good time to knock that out. Do you like having 85 little utilities installed on your laptop to make you more productive? Install them. Open support tickets to get administrator access so that you can install them.

That sounds like something a user would do. Why not escalate the issue to who administrates it? You work network should be all you need. Stop enabling.

We did this at my old student worker position at the university. Everyone was (fairly) technical and we challenged who could get this lovely machine filled with malware and viruses first? Everyone tried (by searching porn) but no one was "dumb" enough to actually get it infected after at least 30 minutes of trying. Finally I stepped in and went to a malware research site and won, but it was a sad, sad victory.

Or just search and run windows_7_activation_crack.exe or something like that, you can get it infected in seconds.

The people trying porn were just trying to get away with porn at work.

Or visited a popular mainstream news site at the right moment. The worst drive-by malware infections I have sen have been as a result of ad networks being compromised or otherwise serving them up on places like CNN, ESPN etc.

Sometimes I feel guilty for using adblock as aggressively as I do. Usually that lasts about 5 minutes until I hear about yet another widespread infestation originating from what an otherwise legitimate site.

Porn sites realised years ago that they could make more money by selling porn legitimately than by tricking you into installing viruses or premium rate dialers.

These days you have to hit coupon sites, activation cracks for <popular software>, or those "watch any movie 100% free!" places.

I was kind of lackadaisical about AdBlock for a long time. Then one day on my Win7 machine I had exactly 5 tabs open: Gmail and 4 SA forums tabs. I got a pop up window that looked a lot like WinXP Security Center telling me I was infected. Alt-F4ed the browser, relaunched it, installed AdBlock and NoScript (aka huge pain in the rear end) and I'll likely be using AdBlock in some shape or form forever.

It's a shame too because I WANT to support the services I use. I would allow ads if 1)they played nice, i.e. respecting volume and mute settings, 2)they weren't so often patronizing or annoying as gently caress, and 3)ad services would loving take some responsibility for vetting their ads for malicious payloads.

Months of work wasted. Millions of dollars in revenue flushed.

Don't be so negative! The key is positive reinforcement, therefore, your company should immediately purchase the most expensive upgrades for all of the salesperson's devices to enhance his output. Consider gold plating where applicable.

Generally, if you don't get a sale, you don't get sales compensation. Outside of sales, people get paid, and then disciplined. Inside of sales, people just don't get paid. (I'm lying a little bit: many sales organizations routinely overpay using things like "adjustments" in order to keep "top talent" that really isn't.)

Like I said, was a little bummed out and surprised, but I'm cool with it. Plenty of stuff to do in the office after all, testing i've been pushing for is happening, etc.

Today, my manager saw that all the logins for supporting one of our bigger customers were taken. This is natural and happens, because there are less than 10 slots and over 100 sites to cover. When it was reported that all the slots were full, my manager decided to limit the slots, so that if you're from site A, you can only use 2 of the 8 or so logins, if you're from site B you can only use the next two, etc.

I have no idea why he thinks this is a good idea, especially since I know that the ones at the other sites aren't taken, but i'm sat here unable to help client because the logins at my site are taken and :protocol:
