I think you can drag one of the anchors to either extend or rotate the type area. Don't know it 100% but something along those lines.

Oh my god, thank you!

edit: For the life of me I cannot figure out what I clicked and dragged to resize it.

edit 2: I see. The cursor changes. Then there's these weird symbols. Reading up on it here: http://www.smashingmagazine.com/2011/02/15/useful-typography-tips-for-adobe-illustrator/

I need to get more goodreads reviews on my first novel to promote myself more.

What do you guys recommend? Part of the problem I'm facing is I've had a decent amount of sales, but reminding people to give reviews is a bitch and I feel like a spammy tool for doing it.

Also I'm not doing anything dishonest like buying reviews. That's lame. I was thinking more along the lines of giving away my book to some people or a site or a contest of some type.

I don't write books but do you have a call to action at the end of your novel? Something like "if you liked this book, give it a rating here. blah blah whatever". I mean, the audience you want to reach is basically "people who have read my book", and the easiest way to target that audience is by putting a page at the end of the book they have just read. Anything else you do will just be trying to get that message to the same people but in a more roundabout way, yeah?

No actually. I don't think so... Although we link the publishers site at the end.

Makes sense. Good idea for book two.

Three friends of mine asked me to draw them from photographs. I really don't want to gently caress it up, so I'm planning to do studies.

How many studies would you do for a portrait, and how much time/detail would go into each? For the final draft, my materials will be just pencils and charcoal, if that helps. I'll probably spend maybe two hours on each final draft, if that.

Why not use the Goodreads giveaway option to send out a few copies to people who might be willing to review the book?

1) Take screenshots and save a copy of the page to your computer.
2) Send them a cease and desist along with a cover letter telling them that if they wish to continue using it they can pay you X (decide what X is).
3) Specifically point out that they are violating the image license: https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc-nd/2.0/
4) Be prepared for them to do absolutely nothing, and consider what you'll do if that's the case (hint: social media/consumerist/etc. Blast the fuckers.)

If you really want to be taken seriously and/or really want to get paid, get a lawyer involved.

I'd get a printout of the website notarized and then just find out who you need to send the invoices to - one for prior unauthorized use up to this point (more expensive) and one for use in the future (cheaper).

So I'm looking for a piece done by a goon that has been on my mind lately. This would be 3, maybe 4 years ago. It was a drawing or painting of two different sets of people, the left set normal and the right set representing different delusions or psychological disorders. I think the theme was spiral vs. elliptical galaxy or something?

  • Keep it short. Between one and two minutes in length
  • Consider your audience. If you're trying to get hired by a particular type of company (game developer; kids TV cartoon producer; motion graphics advertising studio; etc.) tailor your content with that in mind. That might mean you have more than one reel. Likewise, consider whether your target job is for a specialist or a generalist. A small indie game dev might want someone who can do a ton of different art jobs, BG painting, animation, modeling, everything. For them, showing everything you can do on your reel might be a good idea. But at big studios a lot of things are specialized, and if you throw in the kitchen sink it can make you look like an unfocused, unremarkable dilettante who put all their art school assignments on their reel.
  • PUT YOUR BEST poo poo ON YOUR REEL. Don't put poo poo you don't like on your reel. Don't put anything you feel you have to apologize for on your reel.
  • If you must have music make it non-annoying, but it won't matter much because lots of people watch reels on mute.
  • Use subtitles if necessary to show what you did in each shot (modeling, animation, backgrounds, effects, etc.) OR include a separate detailed shot breakdown as text.

[*] might be a bit hard, since I always feel that everything is poo poo - but I'll manage though. Do you normally upload a demo reel somewhere or do you just carry it around on an external drive or something?

You can put it on YouTube if you want and leave it unlisted, and just give the link online applications/inquiries. Vimeo is much better than YouTube for animation stuff, although it can be buggy and the search function on the site doesn't work.

If you submit your portfolio and reel by mail, put it on a DVD. Make sure it plays when you put it in a standard DVD player. Don't put it on a USB stick because you can never be sure the computer playing it will have the right codecs etc.

Also, honestly, if you think all your work is poo poo, why are you making a reel? If you don't feel confident enough in your ability to do a job for someone else for money on a deadline, don't advertise yourself. If you do feel that you could do certain types of jobs, even if they're limited in scope, then be proud and tell the world. You might not be World's Greatest yet, but you might still be the best person to do a certain job for a certain budget.

It's not that I don't feel confident per say, its that my brain always tells me that poo poo could be better.

Tricky question, how would I go about raising the issue of 'ripped-off branding'? Is this even a thing?

Started my own studio a few months ago after leaving my previous place which was made up of like 3 kids and a couple older admin/managerial staff. It was horrible & there was massive tension from the other designer. Anyway he has recently started 're-branding' the studio using exactly the same colours, typography, layouts, icon style, print media & general styling as mine. Even changed their logo colour scheme that has been the same for 20 years to match mine. I had a few friends show comparisons in their respective workplaces & people were shocked at how identical it is.

Now is this something I can actually prove like a stolen photo? Do I go to my old boss & point it out or is he likely to side with the kid ripping off my work since he works for him? I'm pretty pissed off since I put a ton of effort into creating something unique, & now some kid is getting credit for imitating my work down to a T. I've had photos stolen before but obviously this is much harder to prove, not sure where to start or if there even is a case in the first place.

You're probably screwed unless they've stolen your exact logo or are infringing on content you have copyrighted. Copying your general look and feel is lovely on their part, but you won't be able to stop them without litigation, and those types of lawsuits are expensive and rarely turn out the way you'd like unless you have something solid (and more importantly, protected by a trademark or copyright) you can point to.

You could try reaching out to the boss, but he surely already knows.

Funnily enough I doubt he does, turns out he's been on holiday whilst this whole project was taking place. Couple of my clients are P'd off & telling me to raise it with him so I'm very tempted.

Here's what I could get hold of since I don't have access to their office anymore, which is rapidly filling with posters identical to my business cards & portfolio pages. Everything used to be blue (even the front door!) & very commercial with tons of stock images, until like 2 weeks after I posted to a blog outlining my branding process & new site, that their 'lead' (only) designer followed & read. Sucks big time cos he's getting mad credit for it :(

E; removed b/c of emails/phone numbers

Yeah I guess I know that really :( I'll probably mention it to my old boss anyway just as an FYI. I suppose I'm just clarifying that I'm not crazy, & it does in fact look identical. I just hate the idea of the smug designer thinking he's gotten away with it!

Yeah it's a lovely situation, but I doubt there's much you can do about "this company I used to work for suspiciously also started using red bars in their design after I left"

I'm not really sure what I would do in your situation, that's a tricky one.

Update. Called my boss up and sent over the docs I posted before, claims it looks nothing alike & is 'very confused' as to why I'd call him up. Says it's just a coincidence.
I straight up said that a bunch of his clients had contacted me saying it looks identical & were confused if I was still affiliated with him, & he would not have it, just kept saying 'I see zero resemblance'.

So that's that! Now I just look like a crazy ex-employee!

kedo
Nov 27, 2007

Sucks man, but all you can probably do is either stop worrying about it or come up with new designs for yourself (both easier said than done). Your boss's reply sounds defensive to me... I've heard creative directors react similarly in the past when called out on stuff like this. Everyone knows copying happens in the industry but no one likes to admit it when put on the spot for egotistical and legal reasons.

Creepy Goat
Sep 19, 2010
Seems that's the case, oh well I'm just glad I put it out there so anything they produce in the future has a little less legitimacy than if I hadn't said anything. I must be doing something better since clients seem to be leaving that studio & coming direct to me, so I can take pride in that.

Question regarding invoicing. Does anyone require payment up front for print work (& stuff with a fixed cost)? I spread payments out on everything else like web & graphic, but for print work I've been trying to switch to a 'pay up-front' system since obviously some jobs are a bit too costly to come straight out of my pocket. It's proving tricky to persuade clients to go with it though, wondered if anyone had tried something similar?

Ferrule
Feb 23, 2007

Yo!
With new clients I'll ask for up-front payment, or even just a down payment. Most people don't seem too upset by the notion in my experience.

As for your branding issue - why not just re-brand yourself again? I'm sure it's a pain but it might be your best option.

There's a goon artist who's done banner ads before, where they take will take a photo and paint it for you, and they offer a wide variety of sizes. Anyone know who that is or if they still have a thread? I found two people offering similar things on SA Mart right now, but I don't think either is who I'm thinking of.

Adobe Illustrator (CS6) question.

How do you create this type of text effect? I can't transform text with the same ease as drawn objects, and the Perspective Grid doesn't seem to be helpful (unless I'm using it wrong).

EDIT: Figured it out. I had to use the Perspective Selection tool in order to make the text stick to the Perspective Grid.

An even simpler way is to convert your text to outlines, then press 'e' to go to the transform tool, then grab a point, then hold command + option and drag.

It sounds complex when I type it out, but it's definitely faster.

That's fine and dandy now, but there was a time when you had to do those things if you wanted to skew type or put a gradient in it. And for some of us old farts those habits are hard to break.

Other ways to achieve the technique requested above (and like everything else, take some time and fussing about): Multiple Warp Effects like Flag or Wave or using Envelope Distort.
