This is a really smooth running animation, and I'm really impressed/proud that you've reached it! I feel like you were limiting yourself with sticking to your old base so consistently not too long ago, but doing punkshark, this, and other things that have pushed you out of your comfort zone have been really nice to see, and I definitely encourage more of it because it's really clear to see that you've legitimately been making progress and learning new stuff. Good job!

Oh wow! Thanks a lot!

Here to dispell that though, more animations!

I am technically a fully qualified animator on paper. Our animation teacher bailed on us halfway through the several year course and we somehow all passed without even doing a walk cycle. College was great.

Edit: I'm also a qualified web designer, graphic designer, programmer, TV production person and sound engineer and uh.. well.. :sweatdrop:

Here's a few pixels from my baby RPG maker project. Im fairly new to pixel art but Ive been keeping up with this thread for a while and it's been a constant inspiration. These are locations on the world map at 400x.

Crescent Forest

A village of Gnomes. The roofs are covered in sod and they grow flowers and vegetables and stuff on them. Like big pointy garden gnome hats.

The little trails are where the player will enter the areas. Also none of the water is done yet, so I guess ignore that.

I'm really fond of this stuff, because it reminds me of mid-'90s RPGs like Realmz, which I played a lot as a kid, but simpler; cuter, more accessible. This is unlikely to be useful to you, but if you're ever curious about what such games looked like under the hood, I know that one such game called Blades of Exile had its source code released a few years back.

Hope this update is to your liking:

You should definitely submit that stuff A.B.C.D to deviantart, Tumblr or PixelJoint!

Apologies for the link, but the image is currently quite big.

Tried making different tile sets for different lands, not sure how readable they are or how well they come of as.

Currently trying to make various tiles different for each land, such as the villages. It still needs a lot of work at the moment, i didn't want to simply recolor them, but it seems I've fallen into doing that. Does that detract from the picture?

I really like how deep the colour looks in the second example. I think for recolouring it's up to you weather you want to, I'm a bit lazy, but I think it saves time an achieves a similar effect.

I got more stuff done on Cybershark today, after getting it running with bases this weekend I decided to do the Hammerhead in the smaller style

Some modified tiles:

Tried making the villages/houses look unique and different. Tried making the forest for the desert tile-set look more like scattered trees, one with more distance between them and one thats closer. Hopefully these'll help make them look different.

"That isn't the appropriate trash receptacle."
Maybe for desert trees you could just have one big honkin' baobab: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Derby_boab,_Western_Australia.jpg
The alternate houses seem like a big improvement.

I had done some pixel art years ago, but the sprites were so big it was barely pixel art. I'm interested to try again...what is a good size to start practicing with? Just from messing around and lurking this thread, I notice there's a huge difference between different sizes in how you have to approach a sprite.

That's really up to your personal style and what you are going for. The less pixels you work with, the more of a 'puzzle' the creation process is. Larger stuff can feel a lot like regular drawing until you polish. Maybe figure out what kind of stuff you like and start at a similar size?

When your map has forest tiles next to one another, I think I'd like to see you switch it out for tiles that join together to look more like a bigger continuous forest. Maybe that's just me, though.

I'll definitely give it a try at somepoint!

So back to characters now, i'm trying to get them into more "battle-ready" stances rather than just static standing still.

Here's my first attempt with the swordsman with a shield:

I'm hoping to eventually make an attack animation sequence as well, but it'll probably be a slow process.

I'm also going to try to learn more about anatomy, since it'll be crucial at this point i guess.

Still not sure what to do with it in regards to it looking skintight :/

Anyway, here's an update, tried to do another frame (Probably will end up being 3-4 frames in total):

I fear i may have bitten off more than i can chew, i know that animation is difficult.

Also i'm struggling with getting the archer's arm, when he's firing, correct.

I uh, use my laptop's track pad for ALL of my pixelart. Am i doing something wrong? :S

Also:

Gifs of them so far (Excluding Swordsman, still need to get his attack down):

Bare in mind that these are very rough versions, they will undoubtedly be edited heavily, especially as i am aware that there are anatomy issues.

I think if the chest wasn't so shaded and the chainmail was untucked from his pants and down to maybe his groin, it would look more like chainmail.
