C: he eventually died from his Persona suppressants or whatever.

Take your pick.

Man, I'm loving Devil Survivor OC.

I went into it knowing the main "twist" I guess but I'm surprised how dark the plot is. It's the first act of SMT1 extended to a week and taken to its logical conclusion: the gradual breakdown of society in a confined space with demons on the loose. Also, most games set in contemporary Japan, at least that I've played, shy away from showing the government/SDF in a negative light, focusing any social commentary on the perpetually underestimated police force. But all this conspiracy poo poo is real here and it's great! God I want Break Record, is it out in Japan?

July for the Anime dub. As far as the game goes, I think pretty much anything not Persona related is on an indefinite hiatus. SMTIV Europe and Break Record (Maybe EPP US Release) fell in the time frame where old index went bankrupt and Sega bought out the Atlus division and IP.

You are going to be in for a big disappointment with 2, since it lacks basically all of the stuff you seem to like about 1.

Unless you like Evangelion I guess, then you'll probably like 2.

I thought the consensus was that 2 was universally better, plot and gameplay? I mean don't get me wrong I love me some Persona, I just though 1 was a refreshing change of pace.

2's plot is infinitely worse.

Gameplay wise 2 is a pretty big improvement, storywise it's pretty divisive, personally I loving hated it, and felt it lacked really any of the tension the first game had since there's very little focus on "surviving" the same way you are in 1, and next to no focus on how people outside the party are dealing with the situation.

To put it bluntly, 2's story is basically Evangelion fanfiction so it really comes down to if that's something you'd like or not.

Maybe I would have a different opinion if I did the Yamato route since I only ended up playing it once (compared to the like 10 times I've played through DeSu1) so

The gameplay definitely is, but you'll get a lot of people miffed about tone inconsistency and DS2 not keeping the same tension as the first game.

DS2 is also pretty easy overall, mostly due to the lack of really interesting or gimmicky fights that were in DS1. But hey, way fewer escort missions! :v:

Yamato's route is the best, so you're missing out if you don't play it.

Anyway, DS2 is really good, just like DS1 is really good.

I like the DS2 plot a lot, but it's pretty divorced from the tone of the first game. It's kind of like the jump from Persona 2 to Persona 4.

It's a lot more monster-of-the-week, and there's a greater amount of comedy relief type scenes.

How did people predict this? Seems like a totally off the wall prediction to make. It was a really popular rumor before they even started announcing new characters.

Endorph posted:

Eh, there's plenty of precedent for two characters acting as one in fighting games. In Melty Blood, Hisui and Kohaku are a tag-team in every sense of the word, including actually tagging in and out.

I'm mostly wondering if Kuro will be a full character like in the case of the Hisui/Kohaku tag-team, that you swap with on the fly, or if it'll be more like, say, Carl or Relius in BlazBlue, where Kuro is just a part of Ken's moveset.

Every character in P4A is already a tag team! If these guys are using Persona then yeah there's potential for 4 seperate things happening at once although I don't think they'd do that. I think they wanted a way to get Koro in without dealing with weird hitboxes. It would be really cool if every button press corresponded to a different character too - A Koro, B Ken, C Cerberus, D Nemesis.

Edit: I guess there's also the potential of Koro and Ken basically each being a different stance.

I'd like that. Ken would be using Kala-Nemi rather than Nemesis, though. I still don't understand why the P4 characters still use their initial personas.

Probably to distinguish them from the more experienced and mature P3 cast. In term of in universe justification, remember your Persona changes according to your own maturity. Letting yourself go might means it will devolve.

That's possible, but less than compelling for the P4 party members that have made good on carrying on with their resolution from the end of their social link arc (e.g. Chie, Naoto).

The Persona 3 cast members got their new Personas through story events. The Persona 4 members all got theirs through S.Link events which in the case of all but Teddie could be skipped. Not to mention Golden had just come out at the same time and they didn't want to spoil people with promotional materials. The sound files for the evolved personas were even recorded, just not used.

It's dumb but this is probably true, it's part of a few of their stories that they worry they haven't actually changed at all from the beginning of Persona 4. Well, that and the fact that ultimate personas were optional in Persona 4 but not in Persona 3. If you'll recall, the SEES members got theirs in actual cutscenes whereas the investigation team needs you to finish their s-links.

Atlus probably just stuck with the default personas because you might never have seen the others, except for Izanagi-no-Okami which is in the game I think.

The game is easy enough that any build is viable. MAG is useful because it slows your Magnetite consumption and affects your elemental bullets, but I tend to go for health and strength since you'll be doing most of your damage via sword combos. It really depends on how much you favor guns over swords, though.

The only real advice is that you should make sure you acquire a Thoth. This game has probably the smallest collection of demons in any of the PS2 games, so it's easy to get them all, but late in the game you can get Thoth and you should have one for a certain sequence that it trivializes.

The P4 characters probably still have their initial forms because they're far more iconic and recognizable than their second forms. I mean, Jiraiya is a more bombastic design than Susano-o (And probably easier to make a sprite for) and Tomoe is definitely something more people would immediately recognize, especially given the track suit. There might be some storyline reason to it (I mean the game is after all about the Investigation Team sort of stagnating), but I can't really think of one that would be significant.
