They do that for every Iowa player who gets drafted or signs as a UDFA. Seems fine for a blog about Iowa sports. There's not much else to talk about at this point in the year.

He's not particularly fast or strong or good at tackling or coverage or whatever, but he led the conference in grit! Actually that applies to pretty much every UDFA who isn't a big prospect who's also a monumental fuckup.

Bears signed a dude named Senorise Perry out of Louisville. Looking at his strengths, I wouldn't be surprised if he pushes Lynch and Ford off the roster. He looks like a decent blocker and runner that can also contribute on special teams.

They brought in Alex "Trickshot" Tanney to take his spot on the roster for now. They've been insistent that Glennon is their guy of the future and have now reversed the position that McCown is definitely the starter to saying Glennon can win the starting job this offseason.

Niners bring back LB (and crack special teamer) Blake Costanzo after a stint on the Bears. I always liked him, so that's cool.

Bumpin' dis thread because we're far enough in exhibition season that camp battles are starting to take shape (and injuries are happening). Here's my new estimation of where the Niners roster is at. Quarterbacks Obvious Locks: Colin Kaepernick Blaine Gabbert No quarterback controversy here, it's Kap's team. Blaine Gabbert might be Jim Harbaugh's toughest test as a QB guru yet, but I guess he can't be much worse than Colt McCoy so please please stay healthy Kap. On the Bubble: Josh Johnson McLeod Bethel-Thompson Kory Faulkner got waived, so the battle for one roster spot is now between these two. I'm guessing Johnson has the edge here, it depends on if the Niners think that McBLT will clear waivers if they cut him (slash if they particularly care if he gets poached). Running Backs Obvious Locks: Frank Gore Carlos Hyde Marcus Lattimore Lattimore still hasn't seen the practice field yet but Harbaugh's all but guaranteed he's going to be on the final roster. Hyde's been turning heads a lot throughout camp, we'll see how he looks come exhibition time. Solid Bets: Lamichael James Hunter's injury probably saved James' job. Keeping James would also take some drama out of the returner competition at the very least. On the Bubble: Jewel Hampton Hampton has apparently impressing people throughout camp, so he might sneak onto the final roster if the Niners don't think they could get him to the practice squad. Fullbacks Obvious Locks: Bruce Miller Longshots: Trey Millard No drama at this position. Millard should still be going on PUP to start the season. Wide Receivers Obvious Locks: Michael Crabtree Anquan Boldin Stevie Johnson Quinton Patton Patton's had a good camp and has been specifically praised by Harbaugh recently, combined with his flashes of ability after coming back from his foot injury last season I'm bumping him up to this category. Solid Bets: Bruce Ellington Ellington had some kind of foot/ankle injury for the first part of camp so he hasn't seen the field much yet. Haven't heard a great deal about him so far to be honest, but he's still probably got an inside track to the roster since he was just drafted. On the Bubble: Kassim Osgood Brandon Lloyd This is where it starts getting tricky. The Niners will almost certainly keep 6 WRs going into the season, and early on I thought Osgood was definitely going to be the last guy because he's a stud on special teams, but Lloyd has apparently shown up to camp far better than most people expected so he's making a push to get on the team after all. Either way the depth here is a huge improvement from last season. Longshots: Chuck Jacobs David Reed Devon Wylie L'Damian Washington Baldwin's gone, Reed's auditioning for another team, and the other three are fighting for a practice squad spot unless several people start getting seriously hurt. Tight Ends Obvious Locks: Vernon Davis Vance McDonald On the Bubble: Derek Carrier Garret Celek Longshots: Asante Cleveland Celek's got a balky back and Carrier's been impressing in his stead so I'm bumping him up to bring the TE3 competition to a dead heat. McDonald was impressing a lot of people during the first few days of camp when Davis was still holding out, haven't heard a lot since. Offensive Line Obvious Locks: Joe Staley Anthony Davis Mike Iupati Alex Boone Daniel Kilgore Marcus Martin Solid Bets: Joe Looney Jonathan Martin On the Bubble: Adam Snyder Ryan Seymour Longshots: Carter Bykowski Luke Marquardt Al Netter Michael Philipp Wayne Tribue Few small changes to this group: Fotoni and Farrell are gone, Philipp and Tribue were signed to replace them. I guess Harbaugh had recruited Philipp pretty heavily at Stanford, but I don't that makes much impact on his chances. I moved Ryan Seymour up because he's been having the best camp out of the downroster guys, but the interior is already pretty crowded so I have a tough time believing he's gonna crack the final roster. Defensive Line Obvious Locks: Justin Smith Ray McDonald Ian Williams Tank Carradine Solid Bets: Tony Jerod-Eddie Quinton Dial On the Bubble: Demarcus Dobbs Will Tukuafu Longshots: Lawrence Okoye Mike Purcell Dorsey's out for a while, could either miss the whole season or get the IR spot with designation to return, nobody knows yet. Dial was one of the more impressive DL in camp even before the Dorsey injury, it's not out of the question he could push for the starting spot at NT since Ian Williams is still recovering from getting his ankle wrecked on a now-illegal block. Jerod-Eddie is probably now going to take Dorsey's role as super-sub for all three DL positions, so I would say his roster spot is nearly guaranteed now. Tukuafu's probably out but I don't want to quite bump him down to 'next to no chance'. Okoye supposedly looks kind of like an actual football player now, if they think he can play special teams he might insert himself into the mix, but he's still probably practice-squad bound. Linebackers Obvious Locks: Patrick Willis NaVorro Bowman (eventually) Aldon Smith (also eventually) Ahmad Brooks Corey Lemonier Chris Borland Solid Bets: Michael Wilhoite Dan Skuta Aaron Lynch On the Bubble: Nick Moody Blake Costanzo Longshots: Chase Thomas Shayne Skov Morgan Breslin I'm downgrading Skuta and upgrading Lynch, but with Bowman and Smith out to start the year that's probably an academic distinction for a while. Special teams is going to be big for this position battle. Secondary Obvious Locks: Tremaine Brock Chris Culliver Eric Reid Antoine Bethea Jimmie Ward Solid Bets: CJ Spillman Chris Cook Dontae Johnson On the Bubble: Perrish Cox Craig Dahl Bubba Ventrone Darryl Morris Longshots: Keith Reaser Kenneth Acker LJ McCray DJ Campbell Eric Wright retired, Chris Cook was signed to replace him and has been so impressive in camp he's probably leapfrogged a bunch of guys to have a strong hold on the CB4 spot behind Brock, Culliver, and Ward. I'm pretty confident about the top 8 guys here making it, they'll probably carry 10 DBs total but I legitimately have no idea who the other two will be at this point. Specialists Obvious Locks: Phil Dawson Andy Lee Kevin McDermott Longshots: Colton Schmidt Duh. Projected 53-Man Roster Offense QB: Colin Kaepernick, Blaine Gabbert, Josh Johnson RB: Frank Gore, Carlos Hyde, Marcus Lattimore, Lamichael James FB: Bruce Miller WR: Michael Crabtree, Anquan Boldin, Stevie Johnson, Quinton Patton, Bruce Ellington, Kassim Osgood TE: Vernon Davis, Vance McDonald, Derek Carrier OL: Joe Staley, Anthony Davis, Mike Iupati, Alex Boone, Daniel Kilgore, Marcus Martin, Joe Looney, Jonathan Martin, Adam Snyder Defense DL: Justin Smith, Ray McDonald, Ian Williams, Quinton Dial, Tank Carradine, Tony Jerod-Eddie, Demarcus Dobbs LB: Patrick Willis, Corey Lemonier, Chris Borland, Dan Skuta, Michael Wilhoite, Aaron Lynch, Nick Moody CB: Tremaine Brock, Chris Culliver, Jimmie Ward, Chris Cook, Dontae Johnson S: Eric Reid, Antoine Bethea, CJ Spillman, Craig Dahl, Bubba Ventrone Specialists K: Phil Dawson P: Andy Lee LS: Kevin McDermott Reserve Lists IR: Kendall Hunter, Glenn Dorsey (?) PUP: NaVorro Bowman, Brandon Thomas, Trey Millard, Keith Reaser, Kenneth Acker Suspended: Aldon Smith

I'm actually really excited to see Niners preseason games. I want to see what Blaine Gabbert looks like with better tools around him and Harbaugh coaching. Sure, he will probably still be poo poo. But you can always dream of the player he had the potential to be.
