Awww. My kitty will do that, then try to brush her teeth with my fingers, then start nipping at them, then start biting hard at them.

It's like a DEFCON style escalation of cat pets.

Here's a story for you. It's a cat rescue story so it's kind of sad but has a (mostly) happy ending.

This is Cee Cee:

Theoretically's Brother posted:

There's a population of feral cats that lives behind the diner my mother works at. One cat had several litters. Mom's boyfriend managed to catch one of the older kittens and brought him home, and named him Lucky.

One of the other kittens from the feral cat's last one before she died was a girl with hip dysplasia. She'd drag herself on the ground. She used to live in a drain pipe. Mom's boyfriend managed to capture her and bring her home as well. She was too "far gone" to be social, and instead hid in the closet, interacting very little with others outside of food and water. They took to calling her "CeeCee", "C.C.", for "Closet Cat". She had difficulty meowing, and could really only squeak.

Cee Cee became a little more social, but wouldn't let anybody pet her, and preferred ma out of everybody. She'd sleep next to her feet, but otherwise stay out of reach. Now she can meow, and meows at these baby cats outside frequently.

Cee Cee lets Mom pet her now, but only Mom, and only very gently for brief periods of time. Mom discussed surgery for her hip dysplasia with the vet, but she was extremely malnourished and not healthy at all. Trauma of taking her to the vet and the surgery when she's already so scared of people would be too much. It would probably destroy the fragile trust that Mom has built with her. With proper care and nutrition, my brother says she can walk almost normally now instead of dragging herself around, and she doesn't seem to be in pain. He says it took her a long time to understand the concept of "playing", which is sort of :smith:

She's still mostly "wild" but she has a safe home and care from a veterinarian, and doesn't live in a drain pipe any more.

Here's her brother, Lucky:

Update: My brother said she comes out of her closet all the time, now.

Jonathan Yeah! posted:

I love hedgehogs! I fostered five a year or two ago who lost their mum and were looking all confused in the daylight. They are adorable, always escaping and building nests in random places around my home. They could climb stairs pretty easily as well, which was surprising.

A hedgehog wandered into my parents backyard a couple of years ago; there haven't been any hogs around here for ages, so they decided to throw the little guy some food. He came back for more some evenings, so they took to leaving a bowl of food and water nearby.

Well, the hog must have alerted his whole extended family since soon enough there were 8+ hedgehogs stampeding out of the brush every evening for some of dat delicious cat food (yes, we did some research, the cat food we used was fine for 'hogs). Some of them even stormed the house, no doubt searching for the magical place the full food bowls come from and I had to carry the poor buggers out. Our cats were very confused.

Strange thing is, most of them were pretty chill with people but couldn't tolerate one another - every evening had a horrible ruckus of hissing and grunting coming from the food bowls. At times it was like a goddamn destruction derby; a hog would back away, get a running start and ram full speed into another one just to push him away and take his place at the bowl. And yes, there were enough bowls for all of them, but they just had to get the place that other guy was eating at for some reason.

I'd consider this cute, adorable, and uplifting, but I'm big into biology and zoology and such so...

Anyway, there's an older BBC/David Attenborough documentary series called 'The Life of Mammals' that is up on Netflix finally, and really worth a watch if you want to see cute and cool and awesome and sometimes kind of weird critters. Granted, there are scenes in the episode about carnivores that may not be particularly uplifting for some, but still educational. And frankly it's amazing to see a cheetah at full tilt taking down a grazer.

There's even a segment in the rodent episode about capybaras in the wilds of South America. Gigantic herds of them!

There's some just been posted in the PYF schadenfreude thread recently.

WebDog posted:

My folks once had a sulphur crested cockatoo. Very large and quite smart. In one instance it would chew a peep hole in the cover over the cage and spy out at you, then pretend to go to sleep when you came close.

Another day it went on a mission to rid the kitchen cabinet of mugs. It easily removed the nail bolting it's door shut and went to work picking up and dropping mugs over the floor before giving the side of the shelves a gnaw, then went back into the cage, closed the door, and tried to pretend it had no idea what happened.

It seems Wikipedia has the perfect image of these critters.
