Voted Green up here in Scotland as the least-worst. I've also looked up their first-placed candidate, Maggie Chapman, on the internet and she seems a good egg. (I'm awaiting the immediate UKMT character assasination, but I've already voted so too late, everyone.) I've been looking at a few different charts based on option polls with varyingly reasonable sample sizes declaring the exact way I need to vote to keep UKIP out, but they don't seem to particularly agree and I have the feeling tactical voting might not be as easy as it is for our old friend FPTP. Also I think I'm sworn off tactical voting now out of pure stubbornness. If the bigger parties want my second preferences they can drat well give me a voting system that lets me express them. Harumph harumph, etc.

A reminder to everyone to check their local candidates, and if there is a TUSC candidate, an anti-cuts candidate, a green candidate (though the Greens are a little problematic in places) then vote for them. In the EU elections then No2EU would be the way I'd go. However where I am we have six different 'totally not racist' bunches together, including UKIP and at least one UKIP splinter.

It's not like actual physical distance (or overcrowding - turnout is always low) is a barrier here, this seems like a pretty blatant "Vote here without having to see brown people" move on the part of the Tory councillors.

Have we talked about how Prince Charles has gone all godwin and called Putin Hitler? Because he has and it's caused a stir: In Moscow, Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said Russia wanted an explanation from Britain about whether Charles expressed that view and whether the wider British government shares it. "We consider the use of a member of the British royal family by the Western press for waging a propaganda campaign against Russia over ... the situation in Ukraine as unacceptable, outrageous and base," Lukashevich said. Russian Embassy officials in London met British Foreign Office counterparts Thursday. The embassy said in a statement it sought "official clarifications" of the prince's "outrageous remarks." http://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/russian-govt-condemns-prince-charles-comments-23821727

Voted Lib Dem for Europe, since they're the only main party who have not promised a referendum and are generally pro-Europe. And like Peter Mandelson, I certainly agree that membership of the EU is far too important and complex a decision to be left to the general population to decide. We'd only end up rejoining in ten to fifteen years time anyway, and we'd lose all the sweet things we currently have grandfathered in. Voted Tory for the council because the current set of Tory councillors is doing pretty good, as a whole the area works and looking through the minutes of recent council meetings, they don't seem terrible (reading council minutes is weird, so many occurrences of "You can't make it up!"). Also it's a Tory stronghold. The eight wards that cover the constituency all returned 24 Conservatives out of a possible 24 seats. I don't think I'd vote either party in at a General Election though. Though that would leave Labour, and as compelling as some of their proposed policies are, I do need to see how they'd be financed. I do currently pay a fair whack of tax, and I suspect that would go up if some of the policies were enacted.

All of their polices were about withdrawing from the EU and renationalising things, none of which the European Parliament has any say over. I get that they'd basically just be a left-wing voice in the European Parliament, and would try to resist some of the more neoliberal stuff. But the way No2EU presented itself in the leaflet made me think that electing them to the European Parliament was entirely pointless. Then again, the same could be said of UKIP for the same reasons, but lots of people still vote for them.
