I too desired a massive yellow phone, so I ordered a Lumia 1520 from some outfit on amazon and it arrived this morning.

In the past, I've had a 920, and despite the 1520 being big (though, because I have big hands, it actually sits in my hand really nicely. Thanks childhood piano lessons!) it feels like far less bulk than the 920. Anyway, the thing is brilliant, I'd forgotten how much I enjoy windows phone as an OS.

I was really impressed with my phone company as well. I walked into the Three shop in town, told them that I am a PAYG customer with a micro-SIM, that I needed a nano-SIM and they just swapped everything over, right there and then. Now sure, it may well be that it's a sad state of affairs that customer service impresses me by it's uncommonness, but nonetheless, I was impressed with them. So thanks Three.

On a side note, is this the thread to ask dumb questions about making windows phone apps, or is there somewhere else for that?

There is no Modern app development thread yet. I've been wanting to start one, but I don't know what should go in the OP. You can just post in here for now if you have questions; there are a few of us who can help out. :)

Xylo, can you tell me the most effective place to lodge my bug report? As detailed a few pages back, the mic on my phone seems to not work during phone calls (both regular 4G on AT&T and Skype). Voice recognition still works seamlessly, but there doesn't seem to be a way for anyone to hear me. I'm left with a broken phone, and it doesn't seem like there's any clarity about whether rolling back to 8.0 is risk-free?

Did you try a soft reset? (Hold the Volume Down and the Power key until the phone reboots) This fixed the mic problem on my 925.

If you have a Nokia device you should be able to use their recovery tool to reimage the latest official release which is 8.0 of course. This means a full wipe naturally, and I don't know if anyone has ever restored from an 8.1 backup to 8.0, so there could be some caveats to that as well. You sure you just didn't have a physical issue that coincided with 8.1? Like sticking the SIM tool into the mic hole instead of the SIM tray hole or something?

This seems to have improved it from no audio whatsoever, to faint and broken up, but audible nonetheless. Better than nothing!

It's very unlikely a physical issue. As I mentioned, Cortana can understand me fine, and all voice commands seem to work, it's only when placing calls that the mic acts as though it's not on at all.

So now my 1520 won't boot into 8.1 at all. I just get a BSOD every time I restart. I've formatted it back to 8.0, and I'm going to try upgrading again and seeing if something screwed up along the way, but I'm not sure what's happening. :(

I'm with Three, too. When I upgraded at the start of the year from the 800 to the 925, I had a faulty unit and they replaced it with very little fuss. Customer helpline was excellent, as were the attendants in the brick and mortar store. I was very happy.

In other news, my 925 turned itself off last night and wouldn't power in without a soft reset. Well, I actually tried to do a hard reset but it seemed to choose a soft reset instead. The phone appears to be working fine now though, but it was definitely a little odd.

For the past few days I've been getting some warning popping up about my SD card potentially having an issue of sorts. The warning says it can try to repair the card but that I should back up any photos and data first.

I keep selecting the later or not now option and then the phone seems to work fine and has no problems saving photos. I do have it set to install all new apps to the SD card, so I wonder if it has anything to do with that... Though it seems to install and run everything just fine. Anyone else ever get this message? I'll take a screenshot the next time it happens.

It's a 32 GB SanDisk MicroSD card, class 10.

Use the diagnostics app in the store to get logs and send them to us. Then you can use the nokia tool to reflash.

Read online that Lenovo has apparently confirmed they're putting out a WP8.1 device by the end of 2014. Interested to see how that turns out; I know Dell's handsets ended up being a disappointment but I still maintain that if any OEM could make me abandon the Lumia line it's probably Lenovo.

The Great Twist
So I have a 1 1/2 year old Samsung ATIV that's having some weird battery issues. I'll give it a full charge, and 10 hours later it will say 70% left or whatever. 2 minutes later, the battery is sub 10% and complaining, and often will start boot-looping.

Every now and then, like this morning, it'll last 3 hours before dieing on me.

I'm a pretty light user, so besides a few texts and a couple minutes in twitter, the phone's been idle with the screen off.

Is there an app that I can use to see what is using the battery, or to see if the battery is just dead?

Windows Phone 8.1 has an app called Battery Saver and it shows you what's using the battery. Is upgrading to that an option?

Sounds like a bad battery as that is similar to what a laptop battery will do near the end of its life. The Ativ's battery is replicable right?

It might not be, I recalled seeing this earlier (depends on which ativ I guess):

I second the battery going bad thought though, batteries that are winding their lives down seem to have a hard time remembering how much charge they have left.

Another update for Xbox music. Still slow as gently caress, but some decent usability improvements.

- Swipe up/down to change tracks.
- Album art now takes up more of the screen, the ridiculously huge XBOX MUSI- now shrunken to actually fit on the screen. I hope this is a trend to move away a bit from metro's religious overuse of huge typography that limits the space for on-screen controls.

So the seek bar is now a little bit more usable, controls in general are easier to hit with your thumb. Still gotta get that performance up though.

If you play a song in the app, leave the app and pause the song with the volume control buttons and return to the app, the seek bar will not be in the right location and the play button will still be a pause icon. Also if the artist has a backdrop image and you change tracks, for me it reloads the image and flickers while doing so, even though it's the same artist.

But yeah, these are minor issues when placed next to "App crashes at launch fifty percent of the time" and "List view displays blank artists when scrolling". It has come a long way, but there is still so much left to do.

My buddy has a 1520 and has an issue when he plugs his charger in it is delayed up to 1 minute for it to start charging. Anyone else getting this?

He has tried different brands of chargers with the same result.

We just tested it on my Nokia charger (wired) and it took nearly 2 minutes.

I have a 1520 and occasionally I'll see a delay when I plug it in to a charger before the phone registers that it's charging, but I usually just unplug it and plug it in again and it picks it up the second time. Is he using the charger the phone came with?

Yeah, my 920 also sometimes takes a while to notice that it is charging. If it didn't have the charging sound I probably wouldn't notice, it always starts within the minute, so it really does not matter at all.

Given how long ago the 930 was announced by now, and how various suppliers keep shifting the release date on their sites, while Nokia is still not committing to an official date, I have to notice that it's the same old poo poo. Looks like they'll never learn.

That depends on where they learned how to use the word 'soon'. Blizzard and Valve for example have very interesting definitions of the word.
