The protestors helped those people escape as best they could, it's just that a fire can spread pretty quickly if it starts in a building where people have stocked up molotovs themselves, and it's pretty hard to escape when the people using you as human shields have barricaded the escape routes.

The Ukrainian crisis is intresting in many ways. One of the things it shows is how easy it easy it is to co-opt antifascism to further what is essentially an imperalistic agenda. The message seems to be" In order to protect us against fascism we need a strong leader with total control over the people." With friends like these, why even bother to bash the fash?

The actions that are ocurring in Ukraine are brutal enough that you can't dismiss the arbitrary violence and murder of civilians just because you support one of the sides. My support for the struggle against Assad will never make me go "heh, they were collaborators" whenever a video pops of Al-Nusra executing random people or bombing random buildings and declaring them "totally enemy headquarters".
Yeah, I mean 40 people or so died in the fire. That's a major crime regardless of whether the protesters helped people out of the burning building after they set fire to it, barbecuing dozens of people. That said, the crime was used as an example by Russian officials of how the Maidan supporters are fascist genocidaires bent on cleansing the country of ethnic Russians, which is just propaganda.

You can say that Al-Nusra is trying to kill everyone that doesn't accord to their version of the faith, because they're actually carrying out the systematic murder of those people. But the fire in Odessa doesn't seem to be part of a sustained and systemic pattern of violence, as opposed to the tragic escalation of a particular act of violence. And if you think it's the former, then I suggest you demonstrate it. Facts and distinctions matter in these situations.

Yeah totally. And this also varies internally and externally when comparing the statements of Russian officials to what's being printed in Russia's state-owned newspapers. The newspapers print the officials' comments, but then with the added charge in the editorial pages that the Ukrainians are homosexual Jewish fascists out to destroy the ethnic and cultural bonds Russians have with the state.

I'm glad we agree that West Germany was far too tolerant of former Nazis, I hope you don't think though that the Berlin Wall was really built for that reason.

With regards to ye olde "Gypsies are parasites" attitude, here's something interesting:

A group of about 80 Roma from Kosovska Mitrovica set aside the aid they receive from the (Serbian) government due to their poverty, and donated it to flood relief. The Roma community from all over Europe donated a lot, particularly those from Sweden and Austria.

For the ones in Kosovska Mitrovica, here's an article in Serbian, you could probably use google translate for it. http://www.blic.rs/Vesti/Drustvo/467479/Romi-iz-Kosovske-Mitrovice-socijalnu-pomoc-dali-ugrozenima-od-poplava (It's the first one I could find, there are probably better ones, but :effort:)

As for the Roma in the rest of Europe, it's stuff I've overheard on the news and from conversations with people.

Thanks. I've started working more with the local Roma and the amount of poo poo they catch, the slurs refering to them as parasites and leeches, is kind of overwhelming(even though this city is pretty much the one in Sweden where they get the least flak). Gonna spread this article quite a bit and contact a few media people cause the one-sided reporting from the other side isn't helping.

Seriously, our largest fascist party SD have two posters for the EU election that they spread around the country, one of them is to ban beggars and homeless from the rest of EU from entering Sweden.

Uppsala. I help out co-ordinating aid for local Roma(it's not a job though) and help them getting housing, food, clothing, work and more. We've also had a Roma teen live at our place for the month of April but since we're spending most of May out of town we couldn't in good coincience leave a 14-year old girl at home by herself like that.

NPR had a bit about the European Parliament elections this morning, in which UKIP expects to do decently as it's obscure-enough of an election that only the motivated and/or nuts (ie: UKIP voters) bother to vote in it (plus there may be heavy rains, depressing turnout even further).

There are also local council elections in England which have so far seen UKIP gain 80 seats, bringing their total to 102, with many councils left to declare.
