I've got a stupid question, what's the difference between the BBC election count and the Guardian one? At the moment the Guardian says Conservatives have 1123 and control 17 councis whereas the BBC says 18 councils and 593 seats.

We used that survey thing on the guardian a few days back and voted on the party based on that. Not the most accurate way of doing it but a couple of votes less for UKIP at least (not that I think they'll get far up here).

Are you so stupid as to not realise that racial discrimination is also about nationality? That it can refer to 'intra-race' scaremongering?

I love this argument - "I hate Romanians and the Roma especially but they're WHITE!!!!!! So I'm NOT RACIST!!!!"

Southend for the most part is wonderful. I have complaints about the MP. He was useless when it came to my wife's UKBA appeal which as he's an arch conservative was to be expected. (As opposed to my old MP David Heath who always seemed to have time for his constituents!)

But Southend's pretty awesome all things considered. (Apart from the racist bullshit my wife has to deal with occasionally.) Its certainly a lot nicer than London. Because as someone who has lived there before, gently caress London.

Here's one thing I'm curious about; how and when did opposition to the European Union seem to become a predominantly right-wing position, and why did UKIP - a party founded by a former Liberal - never manage to attract the leftist Eurosceptic vote which had previously turned out for Labour and transform into the "right-wing backlash party"? Surely there's as many reasons for the leftists to object to the European Union as the rightists?

Further, how much of the antipathy towards the EU is actually antipathy towards the European Convention on Human Rights?

Ukip blames London election performance on difficulty appealing to the 'educated and cultured'

While Nigel Farage is busy claiming "the Ukip fox is in the Westminster hen-house", party spokesperson Suzanne Evans has uttered a sound byte UKIP would probably rather forget. Asked to explain the party's relatively poor performance in London on Radio 4, Evans said they had difficulty appealing to the "educated, cultured and young."

Elsewhere in the country Ukip had better luck however and took seats off the Tories, though at present they are still fifth in the local elections with 102 council seats, lagging behind the independents.

The party has seen a modest surge in support despite a rocky campaign, with shadow foreign secretary Douglas Alexander suggesting people have turned to Ukip as a protest vote. "We recognise the alienation and the anger that has found expression in a lot of people voting for Ukip last night but we still believe that we are well placed if we do the right things and we take the right steps in the coming 12 months to win that general election," he told BBC Breakfast this morning.

Ukip press officer Alexandra Philips was quick to gloat about their gains on Twitter, writing: "Dear Other Parties & Their Media Chums and ESPECIALLY to spiteful left wing organisations...IT DIDN'T WORK YO! Love from UKIP Press Office x".

Also for all the "ukip are serious players it's a political earthquake" bullshit they're spouting, they're fourth out of four.

Aye - I don't think its particularly game-changing, especially with how they're likely to do at the general election, but you can't deny that seats-wise they've made a rather concrete leap forward.

It's symbolism more than anything, the protest votes that the lib dems used to rely on are now firmly within UKIPs camp, I think its worrying that a right-wing 'established' party is now the official protest party (replacing lib dems) and can only hope that this doesn't last.

What worries me is what happens in the unlikely scenario that UKIP manages to make a strong (read maybe 1-10 MPs) at the general election. Just finished watching an interview with Farage, apparently now they are deliberately planning to emulate Paddy Ashdown's attempts whilst in charge of the lib dems to 'cement' a political party as official oppositions within the councils where they have just won seats. In the long run, if this works and UKIP don't crash and burn spectacularly (which I reckon they will), by following this strategy they could conceivably make a major change of the likes of the lib dems in the 1992 and the 1997 general elections, doubling the amount of seats they have (it's low, from 18 up to 46, but this would firmly establish as a third party).

Don't think it will happen though, for all this talk of the lib dems being 'annihilated' I reckon they still will remain as the third political force in this country.

Redbridge.

Labour also took Hammersmith and Fulham from the Tories, which is mainly down to how badly the incumbents were managing it, being a regular entry in Rotten Boroughs, and Merton from NOC (the Labour led council is pretty good here).

Lib Dem MPs tend to be very VERY good at constituency matters which means they tend not to lose their seats unless it's revealed they are monsters or else there's been some fairly obvious illegal stuff from opponents (There's no way that Zac Goldsmith's spending in Richmond Park was legal and even then he was running against the party's most ineffectual MP)

I'm keen to see the Northern Ireland results, though owing to our typically slightly-higher turnout compared to the rest of the UK, it tends to take about longer to count.

As I mentioned previously, I gave my first preference on both ballots to NI21, so as you can no doubt imagine, I'm pre-emptively disappointed because they seem to have gone and gutted themselves overnight. All my other preferences went to mostly unionist parties (which, if I might hazard a guess, probably won't make me terribly popular in this thread?), though I also put Alliance down as third and fourth on both ballots and cast a vote for the Green candidate purely because he was a tutor of mine at Queen's. :v:
