Union jobs are great, RSSM is gone so basically as long as you don't do anything stupid you literally have a decent paying job as long as you want it. There's sales pressure, but I still think manageable, it's really only pressure if you want a promotion anyway.

I never had the get it right or get new jobs attitude from ATT, so I don't know what to tell you there.

Union saved my butt yesterday after my manager tried to pull a fast one. He said, "Let's just use your vacation as your last days and you leave now." I called my union rep to make sure it was kosher and he said, "You know you get paid out on all of your vacation." I didn't know that and my manager almost stole time from me.

Oh and to that point,

I had a quick question

I am on AT&T and my Galaxy SIII just up and died, refuses to turn on. It is past its warranty and no insurance, so I obviously need a new phone. But I don't have a contract renewal coming up until September, so just buying one outright will probably be quite expensive, assuming I still want to retain even basic smartphone functionality.

My question is twofold: first, can I buy a cheapo AT&T GoPhone and swap in my simcard? I've already tried it with a tracphone in desperation and they apparently lock out non-tracphone sim cards, but will I run into the same problem with actual AT&T phones?

If not, then do I have any other options to compel them to give me a phone at some kind of reasonable price? Or am I just stuck with going to buy a Nexus 5 at full price?

ATT will accept any GSM phone, so yes you can buy a go phone, activate SIM if need be and be on your merry way. That goes for the nexus 5 as well basically.

Upgrade stuff for one thing depends on your plan. You can upgrade with the new plans, but it's basically just an installment plan on the actual cost of the phone (the plan is reduced instead of the phone), so for instance a S5 is $25 a month over 26 months which is $650, so if you would be happy with a nexus 5 it could certainly save you money.

I'm going to bitch for one moment and just say that I have seen my future, and it will be a year+ of answering the question "you mean my bill is going up? Why can't I pay the $199 cost up front and just keep my line at $15 a month?" I really took pains to explain to all of my customers how the new plans worked and that they would change when you upgrade, but apparently no one in customer care did. Good lord.

I asked in the Android phone thread about the Galaxy S5 and any alternatives, and they mentioned the Moto X. From everything I've read the Moto X is pretty amazing, but at the same time 1.) Motorola belongs to Lenovo now, so updates may not be frequent, and 2.) The Moto X+ comes out late this summer, so I can imagine support for its predecessor going on for very long. I'd hate to be stuck with an outdated phone after 3 months. And I don't want to pay a premium for the new phone and be stuck with my hated One X another few months.

So indecisive :(

Yeah, the Lenovo thing worries me too, but I think a lot of the decisions behind the Moto X were from Motorola themselves and not Google. At least, that's what I recall reading when I expressed similar concerns in the Android thread.

I grabbed the Moto X almost a month ago, and I love it. I just might trade it in, and use those funds to buy the new Moto X+1 if it looks decent enough.

So you'd rather spend $25*24=$600+$150=$750 than $350 on a phone and keep $400 in your pocket. I mean I guess that makes sense if you don't have an extra $200 kicking around, but mathematically it seems pretty black & white :confuoot:

Not sure I get your math (I am also math-dumb). I spend $150 on the phone with a 2 year contract (not doing Next+) and then it's just the monthly nut for service, and we've been with AT&T for like 6 years.

Whelp, welcome to the new and (I still insist) improved pricing most people really do struggle to understand. Please note if you are on an old plan ignore the below points. Edit: to clarify on the older plans you would want to do a 2 year contract because the plan is already marked higher to subsidize it. Your plan wouldn't go up because it's already there.

Edit: most people lowered plans to the 10GB mobile share plan. On that plan it advertises lines as low as $15 a month to pool off of the 10GB. The points below go over how phone purchases can impact that pricing.

That S5 is NOT $150. It's $650. On the new mobile share 10GB plan, if you get the discounted $150 pricing, the plan goes from $15 for that line to $40 a month for the 24 month contract. Why, do you ask? Because you are signing a contract to get a discounted phone, and something has to pay for it. The $15 plan is no contract pricing, and the no contract price on a S5 is $650.

"But I never paid more than $200 for a phone before! That's highway robbery!" - yes you have always paid for it, it was just hidden in the old plans. The old family plan where you would pay $150 for the phone and then the plan was $10 for the add a line, $30 for 3GB of data seems pretty similar to $150 plus $40 a month on the new plans. So for the record, you have always been paying for the phones, where the new plan can be better is that your plan is automatically reduced if you are out of contract.

"gently caress ATT I'm going to TMobile or Verizon!" - well, they do the same exact plans. Contracts are going away, and while it is a bit more confusing at first, I honestly would say good riddance.

So yes, buying a nexus 5 for $399 will allow your plan to stay at that $15 a month, but signing a contract to get the S5 for $150 throws a wrench in that plan. The best way to get a S5 is to keep the no contract $15 a month pricing, get the phone on ATT Next ($25 a month for 26 months) and paying for it that way. $0 down and $40 a month ($15+$25) is cheaper than $150 up front and $40 a month.

For the record, yes I agree all 4 companies do a piss poor job of disclaiming that all the new plans they advertise do not include the cost of a new phone. So don't feel bad, most people are going through the same confusing process.

Personally, I'm ecstatic that contracts are dying since it means we might finally see some competition on the real price of phones instead of flagship devices being $650 at launch and still $650 the day before being removed from sale. It's going to be a rough transition, though, because a lot of people are used to seeing subsidy prices being the only ones advertised for phones, and some of the carriers (like AT&T here) aren't making things any easier to understand by hiding the device payment elsewhere.

Okay, so we're on the family 550 plan, with 3 gigs of data for me 300 megs for my wife. We're just out of contract, and we've been on the same plan since we first signed up with AT&T. Our bill is $140/month.

Tell me in math-tard terms what the cheapest way to go is if we wanted to upgrade our phones. Stay out of contract and buy the phones for cash, or get another 2 year contract with the subsidized phone pricing?

Endless Mike

If you get something like a Nexus 5, Moto X, or Moto G, you can get unlimited talk and text plus 10 GB between the two of you for $130 per month, or 4 GB for $120 per month. Going with the cheaper of those options you save $20 per month over 24 months, so $480 PLUS the $300 for a pair of subsidized S5's. For this $780 difference ($390 per phone) you can get a pair of Nexus 5's or Moto X's or even Moto G's if you're really cost conscious and still be saving some money in the end, getting more for what you're paying monthly, and be able to leave the carrier at any time without paying anything.

The individual data plan is still pretty drat good unless you use consistently less than 2GB of data, so I would stick with your current plan.

I'll break down the 550 plan vs 10GB plan later tonight. It's a bit closer so it'll be preference based.

Well, to make a long story short, my wife left her phone out in the rain and needs a replacement. She's due for an upgrade in four months so AT&T said they would grant an early upgrade (with a new 2-year contract of course and the $199 price).

That's fantastic, right? Last Wednesday the manager I spoke with said it was approved but the "ICU" department needed to perform the contract override and would contact me within 72 hours. It's been seven days now and I have spoken to no less than five people each telling me I should expect a call back that same day but so far nobody has called.

I'm not pretending to have a sense of entitlement, but I've been a customer for over 10 years and paid AT&T thousands of dollars so letting me upgrade two months early isn't exactly a massive favor. I'm still agreeing to a new two year contract and paying the price of the phone.

Ah, sorry to hear that dude.

Main question: what plan are you on? Have you compared whatever your current plan is to the new plans? Main point is that the new plans you can upgrade now (ATT Next), which would solve the issue right there. If it doesn't work for you that's fine, but I have found most people should switch, with the main exceptions being people who still have either limited texting and/or unlimited data (with heavy data usage).

Honestly, I hate to break it to you but it's more and more unlikely to get an early upgrade. They're trying to get away from two year contracts, so it's just not what the company wants to do business wise. If you find someone to override it, great, but it will be a lot of work on your part since the overall goal is just opposite of two year contracts.

And the time with the company tends not to help much on things like this unfortunately.

Vinlaen

I've looked at NEXT but I don't like the ideal of paying more money per-month. I'd rather just pay for the phone up-front and be done with it. (aside from the two-year contract, which up until now wasn't a big deal since I was planning to stay with them for the foreseeable future)

EDIT: Oh, and you have to trade-in your phone after 12 or 26 months? That's not the plan for my wife then. She doesn't give a crap about her phone... She just wants an iPhone and she had the iPhone 4 for like 4 years until she left it out in the rain.

You don't have to trade in anything - you just have the option of doing so without paying an additional fee.

Most of the time you would actually pay more money per month with the two-year contract versus Next + device payment. Then after your Next payment period is over your bill goes down since the device is paid off.

Use that tool to compare the pricing.

The Next plan is just an installment plan, you pay for the actual cost of the phone over the life of the period you designate.

You don't have to upgrade/trade-in after your payment period. You've paid for the phone, it's yours. Forever. Or until you want to trade it in.

I think you end up paying more for the same phone on a 2 year contract. The Next plan is actually pretty good.
