Blurry Gray Thing posted:Dude, seriously, change tracks to trying to defend the book instead of acting like you didn't understand the movie: This is one of those movies that's totally worth it to watch the director's commentary. He's very clear about the farce he's making of Heinlein and pointing back toward American fascistic tendencies. Also, fwiw, Heinlein served in the navy and had a giant hard on for the marine corps. The bugs are the japanese and Rio is Pearl Harbor.

I didn't wanna read any more Heinlein, but people kept telling me that one was different. Then it did that weird-rear end shift at the half-way point and got really dull. I kept reading for a bit, but then (right around 'Rape is usually the woman's fault, so say I, a woman'), I grokked a wrongness with the book. No idea where it went after that.

It's basically the book version of one of those cheesy black and white WWII on the front news reports, which showed a sanitized version of war. yeah troopers is pretty mutltiethnic. main character's filipino, his sargent is turkish, he trains with at least germans and japanese dudes, i kinda forget the rest. it's also partially integrated (women run the navy) which is pretty decent for a book written in the fifties. the whole book gets better when you consider it the personal diary of an uneducated oorah marine guy who's really into the whole soldier thing. like if you were looking for a historical look at modern american foreign policy you wouldnt ask a marine with nothing above a highschool education

The initial invasion of the bug home planet Klendathu goes so poorly the humans have to retreat to the loving Moon. They lose pretty much all power projection, hence the 'island hopping' campaign. one of the best movies ever. it's a giant troll because it's a summer hollywood war film that's done in the style of a nazi propaganda film. it's not just the ironic commentary in the film, but the narrative arc as well. rico rebels against his father by enlisting in the service of the state. he later kills his surrogate father (ironside) and ends the movie as a brainwashed automaton while screaming at the camera about the glory of death, to this music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=na_Zac23b5E

I never saw the second one, but the third one is one of the worst movies I've ever seen. Not because they didn't understand the satire of the original, they obviously kind of did, but they try to do the same thing only about religious fanaticism instead of just fascism, only they have no actual budget and no competence in terms of acting, writing, directing, etc.
