Yeah, the reason Touhou is really big is because the creator man allows you to reuse his characters and canon without any royalties, even for commercial works.

The same way you'd say the first syllable in Tokyo, except the second one with an h instead of a t.

And of course I also cross-reference with reputable sources.

From a legal standpoint, better. From a purely ethical standpoint, it is hard to say.

It started as a bullet hell video game, right? Or was there something else that preceded that?

It still is a bullet hell video game series (technically the first game was an arkanoid/break-out derivative but whatever), it's just that there's an absurdly large body of fan-works that it's easy to get the impression that it has an "open-source canon" as Somfin put it. It's more like pretending that Methods of Rationality is part of the Harry Potter canon than anything, really.

I have a moderate interest in alternate history; does anyone know if there's much of that on the TVT forum? The closet I can remember was My God, It's Full of Stars claiming that the British royal family would relocate to the Falklands and conquer Argentina in the event of a supervolcanic eruption.

There's a list of rules the creator (ZUN/Team Shanghai Alice) came up with in regards to fanworks. Basically you can make what you want using the game's setting/characters without paying any royalties, but you need express permission to sell it outside of like conventions or w/e.

The reason for this is that ZUN wants to maintain the "doujin" (fanmade) spirit of the series, cause even the official stuff is sold exclusively in conventions and the like. A recent kickstarter failed because ZUN felt that receiving production costs is essentially too commercial.

It's a pretty neat system.

This seems more like "look at me I'm good a Paradox map games" talk than history spergin'. It's pretty normal for any discussion of that series. Admittedly those can be a well of sperg in and of themselves but this is pretty light stuff.

Touhou! posted:

Boobs of Steel: Because ZUN almost never draws boobs on any of the characters, their bust sizes in fanon are the result of mass Memetic Mutation among fanartists. The most mature-seeming characters will usually be drawn with the largest breasts. See Self-Fanservice on the YMMV page.

Self-Fanservice is a trope?

Self-Fanservice posted:

With regard to Pokémon - Misty, May and Dawn receive insane amounts of fanart in which they are aged up, complete with everything that comes with puberty.

Self-Fanservice posted:

Pretty Cure fan art has a tendency to depict the (usually middle school aged, often flat-chested) girls with distinctly more mature bodies.

Self-Fanservice posted:

While Taiwan is a very pretty girl and is referred to as such in canon, her breast size often goes from "on the average-to-small" side to "Ukraine level".
The same can be said of Belarus. Since breast size tends to be genetic and she's Ukraine's sister, it can be justified, but it's rather jarring when fanon "bust charts" portray her as bigger than Hungary, or some fanarts that make her bigger than Ukraine.
Belgium also gets this treatment occasionally, which may be justified as she's usually wearing heavy clothing in canon, but during the 2010 Christmas event, we actually get to see her in her bra, and she has a very average-sized chest.
Although age tends to be vague, the younger-looking Liechtenstein, Seychelles, and Wy get aged up quite often in fanart, sometimes to the point where it's a bit jarring.

To be fair, aging up pre-teen characters before drawing porn of them might actually be a sign of improvement for tropers?

Self-Fanservice posted:

Both Peach and Daisy also get this a lot, as well as Rosalina. Peach goes from a slightly ditzy lady with plain expressions, to a total sex goddess. In the main Mario games, there's absolutely nothing overly sexual about her character other than that she's pretty. However, when Super Smash Bros Melee included her into the roster, with its more-detailed art style, Peach's fanservice potential rose up considerably. That series has her making coy poses, attacking with her hips and butt, and showed off her legs. The fans amp up the boobs and tend to fetishize the princesses' dresses, if not putting them in other Stripperific outfits.
Another addition by the fandom is the tendency to depict Peach as someone who Really Gets Around, is a shameless, flirtatious pervert, and doesn't mind guys or girls. However, art of her with the other female characters is much more common.
