BBC4 is showing a stage performance of The Duchess of Malfi, filmed by candlelight at the Globe earlier this year. Not sure how I feel about it, Gemma Arterton is luminous in the role, but the actors are very definitely performing it for the stage and their live audience. And the camera keeps cutting between all the actors far too rapidly, as it would in a standard TV drama, and it's taking me right out of the moment

Irisi posted:Yeah, this is the best option, my cousins come and stay with me in Glasgow and travel over to Edinburgh for the Fringe a couple days every year. Trains and buses shuttle between the cities every ten minutes during the day, and every hour or so at night. Much cheaper, and you don't end up in jail for headbutting the millionth person who tries to shove a bloody flyer in your face while you're walking through the streets. I wouldn't get the train though, that poo poo gets expensive fast. I remember commuting to work from just Falkirk and it was like a fiver a day. You're looking at £12.60 for an off peak return to glasgow from Edinburgh on the train. Doing that every day is going to get really costly. I just did a quick check for hostels for the first week of the fringe and the costs aren't that high (Yet). http://www.hostelbookers.com/results/loc/dd/dst/1003/arr/2014-08-01/ngt/7/ppl/1/prptyp/8/ There are prices there from just ~£30 which is 3 days of travel on the train, never mind the additional accommodation you'd have to pay for in Glasgow.

I'm not going to criticise actors on stage for stage acting, but I wish some theater fundamentalist would put their foot down on trying to film it like tv. Just put a single, unmoving camera in a good seat, point it at the stage and don't touch it til the show's over. Shame about the hour-long programme on Webster beforehand, which was pretty sloppy.

Yeah, once it was all done I realised it was the camerawork that was making me annoyed; couldn't fault any of the actors. Particularly the man playing Bosolo, he was magnificent as the cynical, murdering, self-aware servant of those two diabolical brothers. Loved the lighting effects too, it's amazing to see the effects and different kinds of atmosphere that can be produced with a couple of candles.

So Dave is showing all of Red Dwarf X and I'm slightly surprised how much I'm enjoying it. It's a bit odd seeing them older, but after a while it becomes hard to notice what with them falling effortlessly back into their roles. Glad to see they've gone back to basics with it being the four main characters. Just finished watching Fathers and Suns and it was a pretty good episode. David leaving himself messages as his dad was a highlight, as was the sinister new computer.

Did anyone watch The Life of Steve Coogan (or something) on BBC 2 last night. I made it through 5 minutes before turning against it. Not even Vic and Bob's poo poo impressions could conceal the back-slapping. Also did anyone watch the new grim and gritty detective show, this one starring Mr. Miller's Crossing himself Quirke? Was it good? It seems like it might have been good.

Which of the 2 Masterchef's is the fittest? The guy with hair has hair, but his face is falling off, while the one without it has the pleasing solidity of a cueball. Anyway I went back and watched Quirke and in fact, it's bad. A collection of stock-characters and an uncompelling story, and it's so grim and grey it's ugly to look at.

Penny Dreadful is very entertaining so far. Silly, but entertaining. Proteus looks ever so slightly like Karl Pilkington and it's a bit distracting. He's very endearing OH loving HELL! Should have waited until the end of the episode to type that sentence. Well, I'm a bit sad now.
